100% as someone who sponsored someone yeah they are and the government kind of wants you too
Re:US Suspends Visa Program for Tech Firms Including Microsoft on Thursday October 08, 2026 @01:17PM (#50008718)
I sponsored an employee and that's not how pay works, in fact you have to tell them how much they are making and you have to pay them your average. The example given by the US government is a level one software developer makes on average 110k but your company pays on average 115k then you have to pay 115K and it has to be submitted to the government. So the answer to whether H-1B workers are paid less is: they are legally required not to be, but the system relies on employer attestation first and enforcement second. Companies get caught abusing this when the get audited but H-1B laws require they be paid the same.
Blasphemy, all shall know the power of Holy-C! Sad that he struggled in life like he did and the way it ended, he was a brilliant programmer.
Is it possible yes, is it feasible absolutely not
so I don't thin the rust people are gonna be happy with non memory safe assembly
To think quantum computers at IBM in the 80's, its sad to think companies like IBM and Bell Labs are not the same companies they used to be, I mean the people working at those companies during the 20th century changed the world. Im glad they got this award as it is apparent they had a huge impact on security and quantum computing in general.
Re:Hack over 200k Systems Wiped on Wednesday March 11, 2026 @04:03PM (#47340595)
Stryker had over 200k systems remote wiped and 50TB of data stolen. Any system with a company MDM profile was wiped including phones. This demonstrates why you never use personal devices for work.
Re:Leaving Google has actively improved my life on Friday February 27, 2026 @06:22PM (#47187406)
I have had proton as a paid customer for 8 years and it's been nothing but good. They keep adding features, it works, it's secure and I can have 15 emails that go to the sam inbox!

Proton VPN and drive was a nice addition, then they added a production suite and password manager honestly its 100% a great deal and they keep working hard to make more secured services.

I run a searXNG server so it searches multiple engines for me anonymously!

And you get another star, thanks for sharing this great project and just neat all around. One of my laptops, an Asus ZenBook, has a trackpad display and now I just have the weather running in it!
Re:Data centers in space makes no sense on Wednesday February 04, 2026 @12:33PM (#46888762)
We really need to stop letting Musk and others just put what ever they want in space we are getting close to the Kessler limit and that could be very very bad if it happens. They have some ideas but this is already and issue, China had an issue after a launch were debris hit the capsule breaking it forcing them to send a second capsule.

Re:Mobile carriers can get your GPS location on Saturday January 31, 2026 @01:32PM (#46839269)
Phones haven't always had GPS information and they could still be tracked, if you connect to enough towers they can triangulate your location. Cell towers have been able to do this based on your signal strength for a very long time and you cant turn it off. You don't even have to have a SIM card, if the cell radio is on it pings towers period, this is why a phone even without service can dial 911 and it will work. The IMEI of your phone is unique and cell towers can track it, the government has used this and there is no way to disable it. Its not as accurate as GPS but it can be good enough to figure out a route you take and general location

Re:Tesla is committing automotive suicide on Thursday January 29, 2026 @06:13PM (#46818224)
Or he never intended for it to stick around and used it a the biggest pump and dump ever to become the richest man in the world using subsidies all along the way to get there. Will be interesting to see how much stock Elon sells...
Re:Proton Spam and the AI Consent Problem on Friday January 23, 2026 @07:28PM (#46739806)
considering lumo never gets the decryption password for my data, Im not nearly as worried about Protons AI vs googles default I will read your email.

Qubes

https://www.qubes-os.org/downloads/

Everything is its own VM, you can run apps in secure environments and when you close them it get rid of them.

You can even create networking VM's have that connected to a VPN and then make your other VMs go through it for a secure connection. There is a lot you can do with it for privacy.

Also in windows pro you have windows sandbox, when you close the sandbox everything is deleted. It is a tool lots of people don't know Microsoft offers and it is a sandbox, I use it for testing all the time.

Yeah and DnD has lawful evil as an alignment for a reason!
This is how it is done, the hacker ‘Martha Root’ dressed as the pink power ranger and hacked white supremacist dating sites, stole their data, took down their sites and then proceeded to DOX members by making a map with members locations and information around the world.
Re:The Compiler Is Your Best Friend, Stop Lying to It on Wednesday December 31, 2025 @01:50PM (#46447034)
This was a great breakdown and very well written. I think you made one of the better arguments for rust Ive read on the internet but you also made sure to acknowledge that large code bases are just a different beast all together. Personally I will say that AI has made making code proofs or "formal verification" more accessible. Actually writing a proof for your code or code verification is very hard to do for most programmers which is why it is not done by most programmers, but AI is making it accessible and with formal verification of code you prevent so many problems. It will be interesting to see where programming and compliers go when "formal verification" becomes normal.
Re:Hacker News front page now, but the titles are honest on Friday December 19, 2025 @12:32PM (#46328499)
This was a great way to start the day over a cup of coffee, sometimes we need things that make as laugh but what is awesome is the titles are spot on. Thank you for making this Friday morning fun
It is becoming more and more important that people learn to encrypt things locally themselves, its not end-to-end if the users are the ones encrypting and decrypting manually and then sending that message over unencrypted methods to comply with this draconian invasion of privacy. It would probably be a matter of time before they try to make using PGP usage illegal as well but they haven't yet.
Not gonna lie this makes me want to learn Purrtran, you have to feed HEX, clean up after them and play with them or else it will misbehave or even die. Hex needs to be happy to help with code, I love it great way to make programming fun! Also pretty cool that they added print and for loop structures that are easier to use.

"In the following example, Hex leaves you a dead baby bunny rabbit because you have unused variables in your code"

Im glad WA ruled that you can get flock data with a FOIA request and because of this local cities decided to disable the cameras. Currently they have put caps of the lenses of the installed cameras in WA.

Re:Will West Coast Jazz Get Some Respect? on Saturday December 13, 2025 @02:36PM (#46257226)
Agreed there has always been good jazz on the West coast, good article. Seattle has had great jazz scene for a long time.

https://www.kuow.org/stories/jazz-has-a-storied-past-in-seat...

Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, Kenny G all honed skills on the West coast.

The best phone I have ever owned! Running linux you could do so much including hacking wifi. The keyboard was great and the pop out camera for video calls was fun to use.
Re:Craft software that makes people feel something on Thursday December 11, 2025 @12:42PM (#46234514)
Boo is an interesting name for an editor what feature were you looking to make that others didn't have? I like your website by the way, the blue square that turns the mouse cursor into a tracer is a neat effect and makes interacting with your content fun!
Re:10 Years of Let's Encrypt on Tuesday December 09, 2025 @06:28PM (#46212146)
They helped change the security game, hats off to Let's Encrypt making it accessible. I remember when people would get upset about having to pay 400$ for a cert from go daddy nearly 2 decades ago. Google pushing the HTTPs requirement was also a good thing and Let's Encrypt made it possible for many that otherwise wouldn't have bought a cert in the first place.
so don't talk about tsunami or how we are losing the ability to detect them in a tsunami post got it
its people like you that make this place toxic
To think that these are happening more and more around the world and the USA just lost 9 detection stations near Alaska because of NOAA budget cuts. There was also the giant tsunami in the middle of nowhere this year.
