Wouldn't there also be more mint versions in the other category?
Re:1,180 root system drawings on Saturday October 18, 2025 @06:04PM (#45630667)
Isn't reproduction the point? The roots exist to obtain water, nutrients, minerals; leaves gather energy from the sun; this is used to grow fruit, or whatever is used for reproduction

Just keep reading TFA

Thank you!

Ask HN: Software-related part-time positions?

Sorry for the vague-ish title, I'm looking for a software-related (developerment, IT, data engineer, etc.) part-time position and would appreciate any information on them like:- Do they exist/how common are they?- Where are they best found? (Haven't seen them on "who's hiring" submissions)- What kind of positions might provide flexibility in location and work hours?Personally, I'm trying to...

I think you're vastly oversimplifying their stance as merely "refusing to accept a deal". If studios are waiting for writers to "start losing their apartments and losing their houses,"[1] that is a major negative impact to people's lives.

[1] various sources, e.g. https://www.ign.com/articles/hollywood-studios-want-writers-...

With something as egregious as this, I don't think that's sufficient. Other companies could see this and also think they can do it once without serious consequences. There should be a harsher penalty for even doing this in the first place.
But where can we get potassium from?? I feel like when I've looked, it's harder to come by than other vitamins/minerals

Forbidden? Some people don't like it, bit its certainly not forbidden. This gross hyperbole doesn't help the situation, I think it makes the topic all the more polarized. People who are overweight or obese to the point of being unhealthy are of course going to be defensive about it, and sure part of the current culture may be growing to support them in this with the growing number or overweight or obese people, but that doesn't mean we can't talk about it, just that we need to consider this defensiveness in our approach.
This was not my experience at all. School libraries provided a wide variety of content, books spanning many genres, time periods, etc. I read a little bit of everything and am grateful to have been able to experience that, instead of being constrained to whatever some adults may have thought would have been "good for me".

It's true that I had access to public libraries with this same variety, so what happens when those are the next target? I couldn't afford to buy books on Amazon. Would I just have been forced to read e.g whatever religious or political media that's been approved for my consumption?

There's gotta be somebody you can pay to help you develop social skills. Kind of like etiquette schools or something, maybe with opportunities to practice. It's like a personal trainer of sorts. I'd charge, what, maybe $60/hr to take somebody with me to the dog park and help them engage in conversation, give them feedback and ideas, etc.
Re:Postgres WASM on Monday October 03, 2022 @06:18PM (#33074471)
Stephen Grider made a cool website[0] that allows people to make and use databases using PostgreSQL statements for his udemy course[1] about SQL. It's great for learning and testing and has been around a while so I feel like he should get some attention/credit too

The baroque cycle was great, if a bit long. Connie Willis, another great sci-fi author, has some good historical fiction like Doomsday Book

I think they're not as well-known, and there's increasing amounts of competition. I wish some restaurants would pick them up as chicken substitutes like they've done for Beyond and Impossible. The KFC Beyond chicken sucks

Ask HN: As a software developer, what do I focus on next?

I'm a young software dev who moved into SW from a different engineering background, so I don't have much formal CS experience. However, I really like the field and have enjoyed some CS-ish online courses. Since I don't feel like I'm learning a lot at work, I've taken it upon myself to bolster my software-related education. The thing is, it's all been a bit scattered - some computer architecture,...

This is excellent and I greatly appreciate the write-up as it encourages and helps others see how they might accomplish the same in their own cities or districts. I'm literally listening to gas leaf blowers outside my apartment right now while I work from home; it's something I've never quite gotten used to, and this article is great motivation for trying to bring about change and improvement
Re:Mr. Rogers sued the KKK (2021) on Saturday July 30, 2022 @08:44PM (#32291923)
I think OP was referring to how Mr. Rogers introduced the show to a Canadian viewership, not him starting the show there
I think they meant races or ethnicities that are a minority in the US at large, since that's how the term "minority" is typically used
Re:Spearphishing: It can happen to you too on Saturday July 09, 2022 @04:49PM (#32039169)
Sorry, but as layperson I wasn't aware I needed to be careful with PDFs - they can have malware?? Would somebody mind explaining this to me?

Ask HN: Have you experienced decline in problem-solving skills? How to improve?

I think this might actually be a few questions: 1. Has anybody noticed their own cognitive decline? I'm 30 but am interested in experiences at all ages 2. Does anybody have a good way of testing their intellect or problem-solving periodically? This would at least help me keep track going forward 3. Has anybody found ways to improve their problem-solving skills? Or critical thinking? I...

Writers put significant amounts of work into these articles. They post them onto a website that requires funds to host and maintain and run. And you're calling it garbage because they ask for come compensation for this work that many people enjoy or find interesting? People don't consume food for free, why should they consume entertainment for free? If you don't want to pay, fine, but that doesn't mean the food is garbage, or this website either
For option A, how do you put the requirements in the repo? Another user mentioned the possibility of having a "req" folder at the same level of e.g. "src" and "test". Maybe the file structure would match that of the other directories? And what do you use - excel files, word docs, .md files, something else?

Can I ask what kind of problems you enjoyed working on there?
Re:Folding bicycle small enough to fit in hand luggage on Tuesday March 22, 2022 @08:02PM (#30773216)
Many types of fashions or styles have appeared dorky at some point in time and cool at another point. Maybe you can be part of the group that helps transition these bikes from dorky to cool!

Personally, I have a folding bike with small-ish wheels; yeah, it looks quirky, but it works well and fits in my closet, trunk, etc. so I don't care. I'd maybe buy the kwiggle too if I could afford it

Re:Ask HN: What is your spiritual practice? on Monday December 27, 2021 @09:43AM (#29702842)
Some of these are habits I do even as a Christian-turned-atheist. I've read that gratitude is good for you, and I always want to be a better person, and prayer has been a good way of thinking about these things habitually, even if I'm not praying towards anyone/anything in particular.
Re:A Tale of Java Hash Tables on Wednesday November 24, 2021 @08:59PM (#29337479)
This being universal hashing right? Is there an implementation of this?
Re:Willingness to look stupid on Thursday October 21, 2021 @02:01PM (#28948477)
The author mentions this as the biggest drawback, understandably so - if getting a job depends on knowledge and confidence, which it usually does, you really need to be careful with how you come off
