It seems these are the statements the original commenter has an objection to:

I had no idea Heroin was originally a trademarked cough suppressant.
Re:Linux 6.11 Released on Monday September 16, 2024 @12:36AM (#41552809)
I was using a Fedora release with the 6.10 kernel, and I experienced frequent logouts and restarts, almost once per day. It's nice to see that others were having similarly poor experiences.

Does anybody know about the legality of using Eminem's "Gozilla" as promotional material[1] for this service?

I thought you had to pay artists for a license before using their work in promotional material.

Yeah, that seems right:

Kinda? It makes me think of Randonautica:

> Randonautica (a portmanteau of "random" + "nautica") is an app launched on February 22, 2020 founded by Auburn Salcedo and Joshua Lengfelder. It randomly generates coordinates that enable the user to explore their local area and report on their findings. According to its creators, the app is "an attractor of strange things," letting one choose specific coordinates based on a certain theme. It gained controversy after a report of two teenagers coincidentally finding a corpse while using the app.

I get where you're coming from, but I think it's important to keep in mind that there is no centralized score for Chinese citizens, and that such claims are often sensationalized. [1] However, I'd agree that China is a good example of high degrees of surveillance.

Re:VCard and RSS as an alternative to social media on Sunday March 24, 2024 @03:50PM (#39809841)
I also have a QR code in a photo widget. It takes me < 2 seconds to unlock my phone and swipe once on the home screen, and there's usually a delay as people pull out their camera, but there are a couple advantages:

1. People spell my name right. Even when I tell people how to spell my name exactly, they still get it wrong. If they scan my QR code, they always get it right

2. I can put all my info in one place. My vCard has my phone number, several emails, links to my social media, Discord, and whatnot.

3. You can include a photo, if you don't mind making the QR code much larger. With a well optimized image, this can be a nice addition.

Re:Reddit's Long, Rocky Road to an Initial Public Offering on Thursday March 14, 2024 @03:46PM (#39708194)
Just to add to the sample size, I abandoned Reddit as it got increasingly user-hostile, and I have been enjoying the fediverse. There's a lot of cool hackers on there, and I feel like I have a really good signal:noise ratio. Sorry to hear it wasn't a good experience for you tho.
Interesting! I didn't know they were the same person, but coming from a queer perspective, I'm inclined to just treat people as they ask to be treated. If someone is doing impressive work, I think it's important to respect the way they want to be treated, even if it's non-traditional.
Re:The Apple Vision Pro on Tuesday February 06, 2024 @01:48PM (#39278659)
I think it's reasonable to restrict pornography on a device intended to be used for AR in public.

From Apple's perspective, it's important that using the device in public doesn't have a stigma.

Otherwise, we don't need to wait for deepfake AI / AR apps to undress people.

Creeps could go in public, see a person they like, and put porn next to them without anyone knowing.

Without restricting porn, an AR device just becomes a machine to violate others boundaries. There's a reason cell phones in Japan cannot turn off the shutter sound.

Re:Bluesky signups are now open to the public on Tuesday February 06, 2024 @11:59AM (#39276902)
I agree that, overall, short-form social media is leaving the mainstream with Twitter's decline. However, I still really enjoy short-form media.

I can't speak for BlueSky, but I've been enjoying Mastodon a lot. Following people I like has given me a high enough signal to noise ratio that I often find myself saying "Hey! Check out this thing I found on Mastodon!". My friend just joined because of this, and they've been enjoying it too, specifically for programming, infosec, and queer memes (caveat N=2).

Idk. I hope there's a future for it.

Re:Show HN: WAYF – A Simple Scheduling App on Tuesday January 30, 2024 @09:20AM (#39190387)
That's great! It has a similar selection UI to https://www.when2meet.com/, but has much better mobile support. It'd be nice to have a mode for scheduling weekdays in the abstract (e.g. I'm free on Thursdays at noon), but it's always possible to use a random week as an example.

As someone born in 2004, these books made Ham Radio seem so fun and engaging to me, and definitely were a part of me getting my license. I hope that my bodged together projects would have made the gang proud. I would love to see a book series like this updated with modern technology, keeping the same jury-rigged aesthetic.

I'm impressed with the pricing of $19 early access / $39 final version.

I'm used to high-value books for professionals either being completely free,[1] or starting at $100. [2][3] It seems like a good compromise at that price.

Re:W3C Leaves Twitter on Wednesday December 06, 2023 @04:22PM (#38549629)
Looking through other server software[1], I totally agree that the majority of servers require JavaScript. However, there are a few that don't, such as Smithereen[2]. Picking a random Smithereen instance[3] lets us mirror the content without JavaScript (although it still doesn't seem to like being viewed through w3m).

So, I think there's potential, but it's definitely not ideal.

Re:Show HN: How did your computer reach my server? on Tuesday December 05, 2023 @03:19PM (#38536400)
Yes, they are tilted:

    .text h3 {
        margin-top: 60px;
        margin-bottom: -4px;
        transform: rotate(-2deg) skew(-2deg);
        transform-origin: bottom left;
    }
It's possible that a Google Alert[1] might be enough for your use case, depending on how well the legal cases are covered by Google.
