This feels like a very naïve viewpoint.
The reality being that you can't rely on insurance at all. You might have insurance but that certainly doesn't guarantee you'll be financially supported through health issues. You'll also be required to engage in legal battles with your insurance company which might be prohibitively complicated after a brain injury.

Downvote me but: kids shouldn't have phones. No disrespect to the author and congratulations on the launch and all. I just find the entire concept completely dystopian. Like, play, enjoy your life kids! There's plenty of time for entirely unnecessary "tasks"/"work" later in life.
I really like this for practising a foreign language by switching the content language. I do agree with other comments here though that it will need greater control over which languages are translated.

Consent or pay or decline on this particular platform. Since things do have some value. You're reading an article by a human on a platform with content (exclusively?) researched and written by humans. There's a reason the guardian often has articles reaching HN where other "news" outlets do not.

100% agree and living in a foreign country I have found myself completely reliant on the "circle to search" feature on Android as I'm far too often blocked by text protection and the instant translate is very handy. This has already been mentioned in other comments and I appreciate it is a circumvention of the problem. Just let me circle to search though also (sometimes it is blocked).

Be aware that any comment here or anywhere on the internet or in private messages or spoken in private near a device with a microphone might also be used against you by the US government (yay freedom). You might think it's fine. At some point your personal views too will be at odds with the government.
Re:Show HN: VS Code extension to share code snippets instantly
on Thursday June 19, 2025 @03:41AM (#44316404)
Something is interfering with scroll on your website. Let's please all stop letting things interfere with scrolling. This could definitely just be a personal preference but even Apple, who should be able to do it well, fills the page with scroll effects that just don't feel good. Especially on mobile which by now is the primary device for web browsing. Rant over. I'm sure it's not the authors fault and just some unnecessary code in the template.
I came for the snippet share because I was intrigued. The info on the site didn't really explain what to expect. It shows me how to install it but what does it do? Put an example link maybe? Does it create an image? Does it link back to remote repo?

Great. Please do cabinets next. Constrain to some specified material such as 2.5m by 1.25m 18mm ply. Iterate designs by text and output the model, cutlist and assembly instructions. Simple right?

If you're being a dick then someone will call you out for it. They can do that. You can get hung up on them being woke and woke being the problem but you were still a dick.

My guess is that it would probably feel quite cathartic to unplug from all those digital distractions and just use your hands on a physical task for a while for many people not used to doing things like this.
If however your washing machine breaks and you need to wash by hand AND do all the other hundreds of tasks filling up your time it will probably feel like a massive waste of time.

Bug/security risk: Something unexpected just happened when giving this a try. Hoping there's just a default string left in the project and some bad error handling.
1. Created new account in Second linked to my personal github account
2. Created project "newproject" in Second selecting link to exisitng repo
3. Success message "git clone https://github.com/<not_my_profile>/newproject"
4. Create new project now shows the same <not_my_profile> account in the Select GitHub Account select field.
5. Stuck with no log out button
edit: delete cookies, private window fresh login with personal account details still showing <not_my_profile>
Re:What Going Off the Grid Looks Like

I want the same for my family. We rent in England and can just about afford a big (not US big) country house with a garden and poly tunnel to grow our food. Trouble is, I spend 40+ hours a week writing code to make the money to pay the rent and bills etc and don't have much time left to live the life we're trying to build. We'll never afford the £1m mortgage to own the kind of house we want.
My wife recently found the ecological land coop. You buy/rent your parcel of farmland in a small group of people doing the same thing. Rights to live and work on the land with some shared resources.

I also want this. We're renting in UK countryside with big enough garden to grow vegetables and have a happy toddler running around but we're a very long way off being able to buy land and build what we want here. It feels like there must be so many of us wanting to live this life but barred from it by our petty planning laws.
I'd love to find a loose but inclusive international community of people living life away from the bs without having to join a cult.
