"Tapestry" changed how I looked at life.
Good luck.

If you make money shorting a stock, who do you make money from?
SomaFM is streaming music on 46 channels and it is all free (but give Rusty some money if you can).

Just saying.

Furlongs per fortnight.

This was a real unit of time on VAX/VMS systems.

One of my favorite movies, and more relevant than ever today.

If these kinds of machines interest you I highly recommend the book "The Supermen" by Charles Murray. It has all the details you would ever want on Seymour Cray and others in the business.

I was working at a geophysical company in the 80's and we lusted after a Cray-1. Best we could afford where array processors (CSPI) connected to VAX systems.

Was there ever a cooler guy who could actually write? I don't think so.

Anyone who rates "Dr. Strangelove" as a great movie is OK by me.

Frankly I am glad to be an older American. I'd hate to be young and comtemplating America's future right now.
I was going to say that the whole thing is more than a whiff of WeWork, but the article's author beat me to it.
Excellent Sopranos reference.

Re:True ROMANCE (1993) – A 30th Anniversary Retrospective on Saturday April 05, 2025 @03:08PM (#43595983)
One of my all-time favorite movies that not many of my friends have seen. What a shame ...
All this winning.
One state not to visit.
Where have I heard that before?

Now do chicken. Here in the USA chickens are getting bigger (I saw a 6.5 pound chicken in the store the other day) and blander. The tissue to me seems very spongy. What is going on with chickens?
Re:Ask HN: What is the best way to learn Go? on Sunday September 29, 2024 @12:59PM (#41688640)
This was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!

Ask HN: What is the best way to learn Go?

After 40+ years of writing C I'm going to learn Go. Is "The Go Programming Language" still the way? It is 8 years old now and the language has seen more than a few changes between then and now. What books should I be looking at?

Re:Richard Feynman and the Connection Machine on Saturday September 07, 2024 @11:13AM (#41474344)
Many, many years ago I saw a Connection Machine running. Let me just say it was not a machine that you just walked by. "What the hell is that thing?!?" was more like it.

Re:Convex Architecture Handbook 1984 [pdf] on Tuesday July 16, 2024 @07:21PM (#40981248)
Was working in Seismic Data Processing at the time and, a Cray being way too expensive, the Convex machine looked like the next Big Thing in our business, which was dominated by VAX 11/780 machines running attached array processors. We had some test code that I believe we ran on the third or sixth machine they built. Met Steve Wallach, I still have a signed copy of "The Soul of a New Machine" from him. Made a few trips to Convex, first in their rented space in a strip mall, then later to their bespoke factory. They really were something at the time.
