News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Un1corn

Which _Israeli_ companies were used for Stuxnet or the 2024 pager attack? NSO is not the same as the company from the article since it's explicitly a cyber company.
I haven't used the devtools protocol of Firefox but CDP is one of the worst protocols I had to work with. Everything is "experimental", inconsistencies between different domains, multiple ways to do some stuff and revealing internal stuff.

You can always use a simpler init system if you want

Re:Meduza co-founder's phone infected with Pegasus on Wednesday September 13, 2023 @02:01PM (#37499618)
This is absolutely not enough against targeted attacks. It will be harder to detect you but once they do, Firefox (which Tor is based on) is a lot more vulnerable than Chrome. Same for Android, the locked bootloader and such can be helpful in this situation.
Re:SpaceX Revenue Doubled to $4.6B in 2022 Versus 2021 on Thursday August 17, 2023 @03:56PM (#37167105)
I think most people focus on bringing back far-right people to the platform, making the application inaccessible to logged out users and the failed attempts at Twitter Premium or whatever it's being called.
My office is half an hour by foot from my house and yet I prefer to work from home exactly for this reason. Maybe in America where the commute can become ridiculous quickly it's a problem but here I just take an e-scooter if I don't want to walk. A better office would certainly make me come to the office more. But to be fair, even the CEO doesn't have his own office currently so I don't expect any of us to get one soon.
I don't think the person was important but the employer might. It seems to be IBM which is not surprising I guess, although I'd hoped that RedHat would influence how they work with open source somehow.
Re:Linux Namespaces Are a Poor Man's Plan 9 Namespaces on Wednesday June 21, 2023 @03:05AM (#36415328)
Yes, Plan 9 made some bad choices in retrospect, at least in my opinion. The big dependency on the mouse is one of them but also assuming people will be in managed networks.
Re:I Give Up on Free Software Phones on Tuesday June 20, 2023 @10:54AM (#36404935)
When I wrote it, from the options you mentioned, only Ubuntu phone existed and it was after Canonical abandoned it. So in 2019 it really felt like Android was the only option.
Re:KeyDB – multi-threaded Redis fork by Snapchat on Sunday May 21, 2023 @06:03AM (#36019421)
Please don't try to delude people by changing the definition of open source. While sadly Open Source Initiative were not able to get the trademark for open source, the de-facto definition of open source is practically the same as free software.

Dragonfly is source available which is a completely different thing.

I'm pretty sure MOTD is only shown on server installations
This is a pretty terrible comparison, suitable for those X-vs-Y websites. While on paper Go and Java have a lot in common, in practice their philosophies differs enough to produce different enough languages.

I've used both Java and Go and I can tell you, there is no right or wrong but they differ a lot in their ecosystem, tooling and in design patterns. I don't see myself going back to Java because of the virtual threads.

Maybe they intentionally want to keep books below 10 dollars?

Maybe they figured that in the end they have a lot more cheap books than a few that might be more than double because of the non-progressive scale.

Re:Meson 1.0 Build System on Friday December 23, 2022 @04:45PM (#34110949)
Meson generates Ninja files. At first, you were supposed to run ninja after Meson yourself but modern Meson support meson compile which calls ninja under the hood
Re:The Audacity of Piping Curl to Bash on Friday December 02, 2022 @09:55AM (#33831249)
I don't remember all of the times I've encountered it but a couple of examples I remember are rustup with its 700 lines of shell script (although you can install rust normally of course) and pi hole with its whopping 2700 lines of shell script.
Re:I/O is no longer the bottleneck on Saturday November 26, 2022 @04:47AM (#33751356)
Does someone have a comparison between common server ssds and consumer ssds? I wonder if the speed is equal or not

Ask HN: In what format do you write your website?

Up until now, I've used Markdown for my blog posts but recently I've wanted to make more complicated pages. I'm not sure yet what to do, should I write partly in Markdown and partly in HTML? Should I migrate everything to HTML? Or maybe there is something else in the middle?I was also thinking of having some dynamic pages in my static website so maybe HTML is the only solution?

Re:Fosstodon Hub – More Upgrades on Wednesday November 23, 2022 @12:18PM (#33721909)
You are always welcome to use the opportunity and start a competing service in a fraction of the cost. Mastodon is indeed inefficient but you also pay a lot for peace of mind.
I'm using Firefox but if you are that paranoid you should be using Chrome. Firefox is a child play compared to Chrome in term of security (but not privacy).
Re:Apple Execs on iMessage for Android (2013) on Monday November 07, 2022 @01:00AM (#33501755)
As always, it's important to remember that people choice of messaging depends on network effect more than anything else.

But even without it, they are both E2E encrypted. Of course you could ship new code that send the messages unencrypted but it would be extremely risky for Meta and the government, depending on the target

Samsung DeX feels like a POC, sure it works and I've used it for about a week while my laptop was being repaired but it had lots of paper cuts, most applications were out of place, even some of their own.
Re:Why I Like Java (2014) on Monday February 21, 2022 @11:11AM (#30417404)
I'm really not sure I would call Java's standard library comprehensive. I've only worked with it for a few months but needed many Apache commons libraries.
Re:Nearly a third of TV ads play to empty rooms on Saturday February 12, 2022 @04:12AM (#30311265)
It was in Black Mirror. IIRC he was surrounded with screens in his room and was forced to watch ads
Re:Apple removes Python 2.7 in macOS 12.3 beta on Friday January 28, 2022 @10:24AM (#30115722)
Actually RedHat no longer ships Python since RHEL 8, instead they have platform-python for internal use of the operating system and you need to explicitly install the Python version you want
