For some reason, this is 80% of github repos I come across as well. I really wonder how this can be such a blind spot.

Could it be a simple lack of empathy?

In a completely unrelated note, corporate profits are at a historical high. Up 22.8% from the same period last year.

My statement is corroborated by the source I linked. If you found it ambiguous, the precise statement I am referring to is illustrated in Figure 2 of my source.

You called the fact I raised a "tired talking point" and referenced a contentious source. While they do cite serious academics, they seem to draw their own conclusions in the text; unburdened by their references.

Actually, I believe the reason is that this post was heavily "flagged". For the first few hours (1-7hrs) this post had essentially the same amount of points and comments as https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50208960

While this one was on page 3-4 and the other post is (stilL) on the first page.

I did not say "effective tax" you are moving the goal post.

It is no surprise to me that an organization originally founded by the chairman of General Motors, the president of Standard Oil and their like [0] is able to conclude:

>"The top 1 percent of Americans today do not face an unusually low tax burden, by historical standards."

Which is a wild claim to make.

Nice that you find the somewhat honest footnote, but you're citing what is essentially an opinion piece from a conservative think tank.

>Well, in this case, how come preventing access to healthcare to NYS residents is in the interest of the teachers? And, why would teachers think that they are the only ones who deserve good health care?

I am not familiar with the particulars, but I am sure there is information published by the union explaining their position in more detail.

I reject your suggestion that I am ignorant how unions operate. I have been a member of a union for many years. Larger decisions are decided by voting.

Like democracy, unions are not perfect. But historically unions have been effective at negotiating rights for workers (weekends, 8hour workdays etc.)

I would argue they are one of the few ways labour has been able to impact policy and law.

This was the situation post WWII in most western countries.

In the US, the top federal rate was around 90% through the 1940s and early 1960s, then 70% through the 1970s.

While they like to make a lot of noise, data shows that only a tiny fraction of wealthy people actually leave in response to wealth taxes.

Unions represent the interest of a large group of people, they arrive at policy through debate and consensus.

Allowing people to nominate representatives to argue policy is the foundation of representative democracy.

The process is called Ablation, there are many ablated models available to download

How would that ever be enforced, I wonder.
It is especially important to work with early-stage researchers, as they are more eager to publish and obtain career stability than full professors.

"I think we will be feature complete — full self-driving — this year,” Musk said. “Meaning the car will be able to find you in a parking lot, pick you up and take you all the way to your destination without an intervention, this year. >Computation is something that a computer provably does.

This is a circular definition. In order to properly define the concept, we must be able to word it without using "computing devices" in the definition.

Finding a satisfactory definition for what constitutes a "Computation" is actually an interesting debate goes back to the 1600s. Currently, the mainstream definition (from wikipedia) gives that: "A computation is any type of arithmetic or non-arithmetic calculation that is well-defined".

One way to understand the author is to learn more about the "The mapping account" theory behind computation: "a physical system can be said to perform a specific computation when there is a mapping between the state of that system and the computation such that the 'microphysical states [of the system] mirror the state transitions between the computational states.'"

I don't know that this blog contributes to the solution, with a TL:DR:

"[...] Identifying which side of the marketplace is more scarce and focusing on supplying that."

No thanks, I wouldn't want my text messages used to train an AI. Or my metadata used to improve surveillance.

One analogy is to liken tiktok (and shortform content) as exploring the shallows. Walking around, close to the shoreline, you explore pieces of flotsam that the sea washes your way. You might spend a lifetime on this shore, walking up and down, but most would argue that you've actually never gone anywhere.

On the other hand, reading a book is like getting on a boat. You've made certain preparations for acquiring the vessel and set course through unknown territory. A journey away from the shore and away from what's immediately at hand, which can also turn out to be a journey towards self-discovery.

The notion of a type is not fixed, Rust has a more generous conception of what is a type and what its static type system checks.
