In case any first time founders out there are basing some of their own management ideas on this letter, please remember:

"Families and tribes" (a) get by fine without explicit processes because they are small groups, or (b) they do have the processes but they don't need to be written down because they are taught implicitly from birth.

Arguments of the form "We don't need [insert any concept from management text books] because we are smart, technical people" are the flags on areas of your company that will break the worst.

I finally have an answer to the "what's your favorite line of linux source code" question.
Re:Hemingway makes your writing bold and clear on Wednesday February 12, 2014 @07:20PM (#7228487)
This might help bloggers write copy, but it's definitely not good for writers. The first paragraph of Chapter 1 of Robert Hughes' Shock of the New has these stats according to Hemingway:

5 of 12 sentences are hard to read. 2 of 12 sentences are very hard to read. 2 adverbs (he should be aiming for "0 or less"). 0 words or phrases could be simpler*

*this "could be simpler" feature might be a bit ambitious. If you're confident in telling me that the entire text is essentially too complicated, it seems contradictory that at the same time none of it could be made more simple.

So if we name them girlpages will that have the affect of attracting more women into tech?
Re:How to convert and retain SaaS customers with a phone call on Wednesday April 17, 2013 @07:56PM (#5568147)
Even though I rarely answer calls from an unknown number, I wish more Startups used something like this within 24 hours of me signing up instead of the usual follow up email 6 to 12 months later telling me about new features or offering help. By that time I can't even remember why I signed up.

I'm also biased because I love being sold to when the rep is executing her pitch well.

Ask HN: Whitelabeled chart.io?

I'm looking for something I can use for the "BI" feature of a web app - I already have the data, but need something I can use for customizable graphs, charts, tables, filters, etc.Chart.io would be perfect, but it doesn't look like they offer white labeling or reselling. Is there any such SaaS type product that you know of?

Re:Every Nodejitsu app is down on Tuesday April 09, 2013 @08:40PM (#5522480)
I feel the same - intermittent short (1min) down times happen pretty regularly, about once a month, and I only know that from my own monitoring tools - no emails or notifications from them. I want to love them too :(
Re:Introducing Gmail Tap on Sunday March 31, 2013 @10:51PM (#5471179)
I was actually hoping this wasn't an April Fools joke. I hate those tiny qwerty keys.
I'm surprised to read Nasty Gal being seen as a fad - what indicators of stability are stronger than 6 years of consistent growth? Don't fashion fads have a single season 6 month life expectancy?

Re:Web Scraping with Node.js and Chimera on Sunday January 13, 2013 @12:02AM (#5050035)
Has anyone actually gotten this working? I've tried installing on Mac OS X and Ubuntu, both with various problems. The precompiled binaries don't work, the qt build scripts fail, etc. etc.

Ask HN: News recommendation engines?

I'm looking for "news recommendation engines" as opposed to news readers. It could be a web site / mobile app / desktop app. I may be using the wrong term here, but by "news recommendation engine" I mean something that takes some seed data to create a personalized feed for me. It could be search terms, topics, or social media integration, anything to help it recommend news from sites I may have...

Re:Ask HN: Tools to make an API from *any* website? on Saturday March 10, 2012 @11:45PM (#3689575)
Exactly the kind of tools I'm interested in. Thanks.

Ask HN: Tools to make an API from *any* website?

I'm searching for tools that let you automate the extraction of data from any website, which might mean making an API or RSS Feed out of any website. I'm thinking something similar to the old Dapper[1] or Mozenda[2]. Also, what I'm not searching for are scraping libraries and frameworks to use in an application that I would have to develop myself. What are the tools available?[1]...

Technically we're not based in Australia any more.

Ask HN: How should we implement innovation accounting reporting?

I'm halfway through Lean Startups and already fascinated by how much we aren't doing now in our startup. We use Xero for financial accounting. Are there similar tools to track innovation accounting on a daily basis, help us prepare monthly reports, maybe even let our investors log in and track in real time? I imagine it would track actuals and budgets for things like conversion rate, customer...
