Re:Trigger.dev customer environment variables exposed on Monday November 02, 2026 @02:58AM (#50334201)
They are no longer exposing anything, so they no longer have an incident.

Their customers now have an incident that will be resolved once their secrets are rotated. Maybe they also need to do previous intrusion forensics… In any case, not triggers problem anymore.

Just add “test everything”, “this is mission critical” and “make no mistakes” to the prompt.

> Such a weird place.

It's an aristocracy with the progenitors being chosen on a first come first rule base. One could say: "So what? It's a private website with its own rules, make your own!", but then again for most topics and most groups the relevant subreddits are THE biggest forums: Country, province, city specific subreddits, politics, etc. And that makes it extremely problematic.

Reddit might be a private company but the reach of their subreddits makes them a significant player in world wide public opinion forming and opinion sharing -and they largely leave it in the hands of powertripping, chronically online weirdos.

If a dentists knows what he is doing, he is probably scamming you at the cost of your health and money.

I am a mild dentist victim myself. Never let one drill without a second opinion, you WILL be surprised.

Who can blame them?

After having failed romantically one too many times and having an average dev job AI will probably take from me, that won't allow me to FIRE for 6 more years even if I can keep it, life's not fun for me at 35 already, how will it be at 55, all wrinkled up, frail, probably cancer stricken and with no future potential left?

Re:Smart people don't think others are stupid on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @08:35AM (#50086730)
I am smart enough to realize the smartest people I ever met indeed did not think others were stupid, they considered them to be complete imbeciles instead.
…and that’s a good thing, as this non critical incident will raise awareness for safety in more critical domains like power plants, medical devices… oh who am I kidding.

Eventually a digital act of terrorism or war will be enacted that will kill thousands or more.

Why not separate systems between paying customers and free tier vibecode slopsters?
In Oracle Cloud’s PAYGO always free tier you get 4x6GB vps you can run managed kubernetes on. + free mysql db and many other things…

I vibecoded a diary + life statistics/metrics web app, another one that shows me public transport I care about, etc.

Half of the fun was setting all of this up. Learning terraform, kubernetes, helm, lgtm observability stack, https, vibecoding…

I can also use this to show that I am a “total stack” A-Z developer.

Re:Theranos.World on Thursday October 08, 2026 @05:48PM (#50012849)
Reddit is full of EH content lately, now this.

All of this must be a marketing campaign for the movie.

Astra Penthesilea has towers that sometimes clip into the green... hedges? Pipes?

Opus Eutropia has a few isekai circle cities with one of them... ON the river, giving no space for ship traffic.

Slop has never been this beautiful before!

Re:It may soon be possible to create "mirror life" on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @01:40PM (#49996157)
> I find it really hard to believe that you can make a whole organism that doesn't have any molecules that can be targeted by an antibody.

We just don't know yet, but I want to believe because I think it's exciting. Protease failure, transport machinery failure, MHC binding failure, they are all stereospecific after all... So it's possible.

> And if you can do that then why go through mirror life anyway?

Because our body can produce antibodies against all "classical" forms of life. It's probably impossible to produce classical pathogens that are fully invisible to the immune system. That's the whole point and danger of mirror life in the context of pathogen creation. Plenty of classical pathogens were our antibodies (usually) don't help already exist though: HIV for example, where only very few people are lucky enough to be elite neutralizers. If we wanted to do biological warfare, it would probably easier to enhance those viruses.

> And if we ever get to this point I'm very optimistic that we would have a good way to vaccinate against this.

I am not so sure about this, if the bodies molecular machinery is unable to produce antigens for those pathogens, no classical or mrna vaccine is gonna trick the body into producing them, it's just technically impossible. You'd need to "update" the whole immune system to be able to manufacture the mirror antibodies and from that we are an eternity away. The only remotely feasible cure in such a world would be through infecting the body with another mirror-pathogen that produces mirror-antibodies or directly injecting mirror-antibodies...

Re:It may soon be possible to create "mirror life" on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @09:46AM (#49992827)
"A sufficiently stereochemically alien pathogen could, in principle, place essentially all of its important antigenic determinants outside the effective recognition repertoire of a conventional adaptive immune system."

With perfect knowledge of the immune system and the capability to create the pathogens of our dreams it would most likely be possible to create this pathogen of our dreams.

Making an entire self replicating mirror organism that would both have this property of "being invisible to the specific immune system" and AND being an effective pathogen is far from a solved problem though. It's further away as useful quantum computing!

We don't even have self replicating mirror cells, just some synthetic Frankensteins.

Yeah. Damned if you do, damned if you don‘t.
Re:A Staff Engineer's Guide to Inventing Work on Friday October 02, 2026 @05:33AM (#49931584)
I got promoted to something like staff engineer and my director keeps pushing me to find new things to work on. It's very stressful and I am kind of not creative at all in regards to features, so I am focusing on saving costs. Caching, batching, rightsizing, bundling, optimizing. At the same time I need to steer him away from putting me in charge of "set up to fail" moonshot projects.

If I regularly reduce costs by 2, 3 times what I cost my company, I will be left alone with the moonshot projects, won't be targeted by RIF and get my above inflation salary increase. Luckily, there are ENDLESS money wasting sins of the past to fix.

That little thing where we send unnecessary SNS messages that was costing 1000$ a year when the company was still young? It's 100.000$ a year now! Nothing that moves the needle in a multi million dollar revenue company, but still a noteworthy personal achievement if fixed on my own volition.

Incredible how the idea of Google being such bad choice has become so entrenched that people prefer the offerings of two companies that might not exist anymore in a few years over Google‘s similar offering.
Re:Livenerf: Has Opus 5.5 been nerfed yet? on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @02:53AM (#49905329)
Nothing nefarious is actually going on here: You have to understand that AI models are like fruit. Fresh fruit can quickly spoil and mold. We all know the meme about strawberries getting moldy before you can even bring them home! This is the reason they regularly bring out new, unspoiled models and also the reason why they will need to keep doing so just to keep model performance at the same level.

AGI was reached like 2 weeks ago, latest claude 5.x models rule supreme and software engineering is solved?

As opposed to google AI/gemini key catastrophes and aws billing adventures?
There is the theory of too many people being born, with not enough souls to populate all those bodies.

In that theory, people without an inner monologue and without imagination are soulless, real life NPC.

To me, this inner world is an essential property of being human.

In paygo mode I still get 4. Their cost calculator also calculates with 4 free ones.
Stop cheering. Oracle still offers a free arm 4x6GB kubernetes cluster and 2 free amd cpu‘s.

It‘s the best free platform for learners and small scale operations.

Re:Coding Is Over. Get over It on Saturday September 12, 2026 @10:21AM (#49672583)
Worked on my first borderline-computer-sciency not 100% trivial task in a long while today: Not sending one SNS message per event, but batching them on the client side, sending out as batched message if it went beyond a certain size or beyond a certain timeout (-> limit event delay caused by waiting for batch to fill up.) (this will save A LOT of money)

I wrote a nice spec for it, gave it to claude fable and it completely shit the bed. I ended up writing most of it myself and let claude iron out the bugs and kinks. Ultimately it was just 150 lines and far easier to follow and much more sensible than the fully automated claude output. I don't understand why AI couldn't build this.

Apparently I am still not living in the dark-software-factory parallel world many other people live in. Am I already part of the permanent AI underclass? Lapped and too far behind to catch up?

Re:AI handles incidents, engineers lose touch with their systems on Saturday September 05, 2026 @05:49AM (#49574903)
That‘s the goal of the AI tech bro world: get us dependant on their tech, ruin our native/raw skills, lock us into their proprietary skills.

Reminds me of the move from on prem to cloud. Linux sysadmins were killed and replaced by aws focused devops.
