Re:Want to learn Rails? Start here. on Sunday September 16, 2012 @07:42PM (#4530776)
I'm actually in the process of learning Ruby right now. I'm curious though. From the perspective of someone who has hasn't been programming for a long time, would you consider it a good idea to learn Ruby before learning Rails? I'm waiting on my copy of The Well-Grounded Rubyist to arrive so I can get started.
Re:Ask HN: What can I do in NYC for 4 hours? on Sunday September 16, 2012 @10:21AM (#4529183)
I'd really like to visit a start-up and see what it's really like. I've never had a development job before.

I guess I could use a good leg stretch between flights. :P

Ask HN: What can I do in NYC for 4 hours?

I'm looking at booking a trip soon and I have the choice of flying through NYC with a 5 1/2 hour layover. Making sure that I have plenty of time to get through security/customs, that leaves me about 4 hours to check out the NY tech scene. What can I do in NYC for 4 hours?

Do you read at or away from the computer?

Before now, I've pretty much read my technical books in front of my computer so I could stop whenever I wanted to play with some cool new function or whatever. It's occurred to me that this could be terrible for my productivity and I'm going to start reading away from my laptop. Then, between reading and coding, I'll write down exactly what I want to accomplish and this will hopefully save a...

I've just bought a pair of Klipsch earbuds that have worked pretty well so far.
Re:Show HN: made my MVP after learning python on Thursday September 13, 2012 @12:27PM (#4517039)
Congratulations on getting your MVP out! I never tried Think Python, but I did learn a lot from Learn Python the Hard Way -- it's a pretty good book.

Where did you get the background picture?

Re:Ask HN: GIS, Audio Mashup Ideas? on Thursday September 13, 2012 @12:33AM (#4514808)
The FCC keeps information on radio stations, but it doesn't include anything on the station's genre. This could probably be fixed with a classifier that learns based on the station's website.

I've never heard of Shoutcast, I'll have to check it out.

EDIT: SHOUTcast's API doesn't seem to support anything that would allow a show host to gather info on users. That's probably for the best though ..

Something like Eventful, but solely for music?

Ask HN: GIS, Audio Mashup Ideas?

I'm looking for a neat side project idea, preferably something to do with geolocation and audio. I had an idea of showing a graph with people in your area that are listening to the same radio channel as you are, but Pandora doesn't have an open API and I'm too cheap to pay for IHeartRadio.Any ideas?

Re:Ask HN: How do I show a company that I'm worth hiring? on Monday September 10, 2012 @11:37PM (#4503651)
I'm from Jacksonville, FL. Unfortunately, there isn't a huge software community here -- at least not that I can find.
Re:Ask HN: How do I show a company that I'm worth hiring? on Monday September 10, 2012 @11:36PM (#4503645)
I tried to have a look at your API, but it won't load. :) Just sayin.

EDIT: Nevermind, it loaded.

Ask HN: How do I show a company that I'm worth hiring?

I want to start applying to companies looking to hiring junior developers, but I don't seem to meet the requirements for any of them.I don't have a college degree. I don't have an amazing GitHub account. I'm not the best programmer in the world. I'm certainly not a "rock star" or a "ninja".What I DO offer is passion and the ability to learn quickly. What else do I need to convince a company to...
