Many homeless are that way due to situations in their life beyond their control. Mental illness, physical disabilities, age, ect. Most people that do not have these problems could fairly easily get an entry level job and scrape by until they can get back on their feet.

I don't recall the exact article, but I believe they "crowd source" the data via repo-men & tow trucks with automatic scanners. https://drndata.com/

A Rubix Cube seems like the obvious choice. In learning to solve the cube you will learn several algorithms, and see how useful they can be yourself.
Re:Verified by Twilio on Friday August 30, 2019 @10:36AM (#20839018)
I've work for a debt collection company.

Typically, they do not handle their own phone numbers, their vendor for the dialer does. This is entirely dependent on the priorities of the vendor.

Due to the FDCPA, we are unable to give out the reason for our call as that would inform any 3rd party that the person we are calling to speak to is in debt.

The agents on the front line are scripted to advise them that we are calling in regards to a personal matter, or in response to the letter they received.

This gets even worse if your company name includes "Collections" or any variation of that, as they cannot give out their company name in that case unless prompted (UDAAP requires them to answer direct questions not about the loan in a straight forward way).

Re:Ask HN: How to help someone learn to code? on Wednesday August 21, 2019 @05:21PM (#20761963)
I've taught a few friends the basics by using codecademy's free javascript course while also tutoring. Unless they've changed it, it has you build a simple console cash register. It introduces each of it's concepts very organically, & if they get stuck on any of javascript's idiosyncrasies I'm there.

I read this as him sharing this painful experience he had with us, but spinning it to show how devoted to his work he has been.

Maybe this is simply because anything I read on LinkedIn gives me that feeling.

This is a wonderful resource to see exactly how massive of a change in C02 this is.

It also goes into detail on many of the effects we are seeing now in response to climate change.

Re:Third Thoughts About Trigger Warnings on Friday July 27, 2018 @11:32AM (#17626702)
The fact that they are arguing that Exposure Therapy is more like sitting at a psychologist's office which is a person that you have come to know over an extended period of time and learn to trust them to a complete stranger saying literally anything they can in order to "trigger" somebody seems quite asymmetrical.

I feel it's a much easier comparison to Physical Therapy. Just because you need to move your arm more in order to regain a full range of movement, doesn't mean that people should EXPECT for me to strain to reach an item that is outside my current reach. When I am in Physical Therapy Session, I expect to be in pain and to exert myself. This is the key difference.

Trigger Warning means if they feel they should listen, then listen. If you do not feel that you should listen then don't. Either way, I should be aware of the fact that this could be a difficult statement and be prepared for it.

I always enjoy Path Finder, it's just so easy to get a game started. I've tried Mutants & Masterminds, but the powers can quickly get bloated and OP.
This is a fairly similar question to asking what skills are needed to be a "Front-End Developer". What technologies are you most interested in/ are in-demand where you are seeking employment?

Don't just think up a job title and then learn to do that.

Try drilling down deeper, doing research in your area, or just learning what is popular, and you will usually have a title that matches it.

I personally love Angular (Not AngularJS) + TypeScript. If you can get along with how opinionated it is, you will be rewarded with a quick development time and great looking project that is easy as pie to manage.

Vue doesn't seem to be robust enough yet for larger projects, and I personally just don't fancy React's syntax.

If you want to just be able to get from 0 understanding of front-end to making a working demo, you really need basic HTML/CSS/JavaScript. It's like trying to write a book before you learn to read.

It seems like you're just upset that you didn't get the job. If you want to work with your SO and this would enable it then why should you being bitter about trying again?

From what I've seen it takes many applicants several tries to get in to Google, and if that's the case this hasn't put you on any "blacklist". Make sure next try you're aware of these practices and think through the problems before writing your 1st line of code.

Overall I really like the concept of the site! I'd recommend not just having theory being the only negative option but including a 'False' or 'Disagree' option as many of the topics seem to be opinion. You could also have each option be color coordinated with the green(positive) orange(undecided) red(negative) that you've defined in your current logo. I would adjust the brightness of each color so that you can then use these colors as a background on each topic based on user input. Either as a gradient or simply as a % block. With this you can hide initial % on each button until after the user hovers over the topic or individual buttons. Also adding an option to hide other user's choices until you have made ours would add an extra layer incentive for interaction for your users.
Re:How scammers get away with fraud on Monday July 09, 2018 @03:56PM (#17492963)
I have previously worked at Southwest Airlines HQ as a Customer Relations Supervisor, and when something as serious as booking $1000's of dollars of flights and flying or No-showing several to cover the one they were actually intent on flying the most we would do is issue a charge back and report to our internal fraud prevention dept which would simply add it as a data point to automatically cancel flights similar to this in the future. We would have the fraudster's full name, address, phone number, email, and sometimes their social for their ticket to be valid to get past TSA. Even with all this, nothing more than canceling a Rapid Rewards account or blacklisting their email was actually ever done to the thief.

Thank you for posting this.

I needed this article more than I knew

Always think about where the user would be expecting to find each comment.

The route I would use would be to use Angular in order to display your list of subreddits alphabetically. Selecting the checkbox of the subreddit selects all comments within that subreddit for deletion. Selecting anything other than the checkbox in that subreddit <div> will simply use ngIf to display a <div> below it containing an ngFor <ul> showing each comment within this subreddit chronologically for selection. You can always break these into smaller groups such as years/months/days.

In the case of /r/gonewild I would also allow for deletion of only comments with pictures/links.

Re:Ask HN: What do you want out of social media? on Friday June 22, 2018 @12:45PM (#17375413)
For the most part I don't use social media. My Facebook exists so that members of my family and friends can contact me via messenger when either of phone numbers change. I use Twitter to show my interest in the web development community to potential clients and employers.
Re:Ask HN: How can I make money when I am bored? on Thursday June 14, 2018 @05:32PM (#17315578)
I would recommend building/maintaining a side project, and monetizing that. Even if it's something as simple as a personal tech blog that has basic AdSense.
