Beautiful! Competition is good for the consumer.
Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? on Wednesday April 06, 2011 @02:20PM (#2416240)
We are working on Ad Serving and advanced metrics tracking.
Those who are interested in this topic should watch Urban Explorers: Into the Darkness. It is available as an instant watch on Netflix.

Re:Secret Fears of the Super-Rich on Friday March 25, 2011 @12:42PM (#2369204)
Saw the movie last night after the recommendations on this thread.

What stood out the most for me is how Warren Buffett disowned his grand daughter, Nicole Buffett, for taking a part in the movie.

Here is an exert from the article[1]:

"Buffett said she received a letter -- in response to one she sent asking her grandfather to explain why he disowned her -- in which he told her she had "never been considered a real family member, that I have not been legally or emotionally adopted" by him. Nicole Buffett reads from the part of the letter in the documentary."

I wonder if she had any trouble getting permission from the building owners to do this.

Re:Borders Nearing Bankruptcy Filing on Friday February 11, 2011 @06:37PM (#2208670)
Very sad. I loved the borders in San Francisco on 3rd and Townsend. It closed last year, now it is just a big, ugly, empty space.

Re:NYT Review of ‘The 4-Hour Body’ on Thursday January 06, 2011 @06:12PM (#2077745)
Hahaha. That title is awesome.

From one of the amazon reviews:

" At the risk of seeming disgusting, permit me to say that several days after I started this practice, I experienced what was probably the largest bowel movement in my life. I've also lost a few inches around the waistline and my energy level seems to be rising. "

No one mentioned burning ants with a magnifying glass.
Re:Introducing Word Lens on Thursday December 16, 2010 @08:27PM (#2014695)
This is impressive! I could have really used something like this on my trip to Japan!

Re:I Quit Hacker News on Tuesday November 23, 2010 @01:03PM (#1934655)
I disagree that everything that is submitted should be related to tech. Opposite is also true, just cause it is related to tech, does not mean it is appropriate.

In any case, here is the official NH policy:

"What to Submit

On-Topic: Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity."

"...one of the top stories on Hacker News over the weekend. In other words, the ‘bad guys’ already know about it, but consumers may not."

Never thought of this community as bad guys...

Re:How To Actually Win A Fist Fight on Tuesday November 16, 2010 @06:39PM (#1912229)
Last time I had a physical confrontation at a bar, the first thing the guy did is make sure I could see a handgun behind his belt. Needless to say I walked away immediately.

Avoid this crap at all costs. Not worth dying over.

Re:Do the Right Thing: A lesson by Netflix on Thursday November 11, 2010 @07:18PM (#1895968)
I have always been pleased with Netflix as a customer. Adding instant watch at no additional charge was something I really admired as well when they first rolled it out.
Re:Poll: OkCupid stories on Thursday October 28, 2010 @07:59PM (#1845485)
Very encouraging to hear so many positive stories coming out from the usage of this site. Good for you folks!

I am single for the first time since my early 20s (28 now) and completely overwhelmed by trying it all over again.

I have had a few dates thorough OKc but nothing long term.

Re:An implausibly illustrated introduction to HTML5 Web Workers on Wednesday August 18, 2010 @05:36PM (#1615689)
"mike",

There is no need to insult my writing. The original post was about HTML 5 and so was my write up.

Here is a short write up I did for my company blog after attending the now famous HTML5:The Future Of The Web mini conference.

Re:Too much time on his hands on Tuesday August 10, 2010 @07:57PM (#1593314)
What I realized fairly recently, partly due to growing up and partly due to reading "The Alchemist" is that most people will simply discourage you.

Be it with remarks such as the one the author rants about. However it takes many forms.

Just remember: when you do something creative, something you love, something outside of the mundane you do not have to justify your self to anyone. Chances are, if what you are creating appears utterly pointless to others, it makes you happy. Who cares what others think or say?

True art should be made for your self, not for any other critic be it real or pretend.

Re:This Is Why The American Dream Is Out Of Reach on Tuesday August 03, 2010 @04:19PM (#1572609)
I went to school for one reason and one reason only because I knew I had to. I picked Psychology as my degree because, at that time, this was the only thing I could imagine studding for 4 years.

I worked in IT industry before I started school, while going to school and after graduation. Most of my techy friends discouraged my degree every step of the way.

'Why the hell do you need it? Bill gates never even finished' was the tone of their message.

Well, I got my degree and sure I don't really use it in my job. Sure I had a big lump of dissapoitnment in my throat after I graduated and came home to realize the big pay off is not there. However, as lame as this sounds, I learned how to learn. I learned that as pointless as most of my classes were, ones that weren't will stay with me for ever.
