Re:China Censors Bad Economic News Amid Signs of Slower Growth on Wednesday October 03, 2018 @04:55AM (#18128618)
I wonder if thats why tons of chines are buying houses in the US and Canada since they know that China house bubble has actually burst and they need to move their money elsewhere. They know it's a timebomb, the news will someday come out, but hey that house you bought in Canada still got value, as it'll take time for those markets to correct, but if you've got the Jump you can sell it.
the later, it's for having an IP portfolio and getting a choke-hold on the market
Than Tharanos decided to jump onto that bandwagon and make a dumpster fire
Re:Software Engineer, Machine Learning on Friday September 15, 2017 @12:12PM (#15258282)
This says learning and studying takes 70 hours a week so perhaps its not working for 70 hours a week, but there's a strong learning component which could be done outside of the job. Working as an ML Engineer there's a good bit of learning outside of the job and reading up on the latest papers which can take a lot of time outside of work.

If Texas legalized weed I would move to Austin overnight. How is Colorado's tech sector these days?
Re:No U.S. tech company went public in Q1 2016 on Monday April 04, 2016 @06:20PM (#11426220)
You do realize that you are asking the SEC to create a class of "Special investors" that would have special rules. This is a horrible and undemocratic idea.
React itself can be used as a framework to make front-ends.

Ask HN: How to Switch fields within tech

What is a good way to switch fields within tech. I've mostly been a frontend developer with some backend. While working on side projects, I've realized that I actually enjoy working a lot more with backend tech, then front end. How does one go about switching their job to reflect their strengths? What are also some good tips/sites/things to do to find opportunities?

I see what you did there.
Re:Ask HN: Going into product management? on Monday August 31, 2015 @10:48PM (#10150423)
Product management is an interesting position and will depend a lot on what kind of authority you possess. In certain cases you will incredible authority, while other times you have no actual power and are just an overseer over a given group of people who has to report to higher ups. Overall, project management is a people job, the people you manage and your relationship with them will determine your success. Its good to have a technical know how in PM, but if your people skills are not up to par your going to have an incredibly difficult job, especially the less formal authority you have.
Re:Ask HN: I am busy with too many things at once on Friday July 03, 2015 @03:48AM (#9824138)
I feel that Im in a similar boat, the advice in this thread has been helpful to me. What Im starting to realize is that its better to focus on a particular field, such as mathematical analysis, or network security. This way you have a skill in a particular field.

Ask HN: Exploring other tech fields

I've been self-teaching myself to code for 2 years now, and Im working now as a mobile developer. I get a constant nagging feeling that mobile development isn't for me, it doesn't excite me, and I don't find working with UI's that thrilling as I keep working in mobile. Im wondering what is a good way to explore other fields and really get my feet wet there.

Re:Ask HN: How to solve the problems of greece? on Sunday June 28, 2015 @01:50PM (#9794326)
At this point there is no easy fix and an international market calamity is unavoidable. The only thing to do is to minimize the damage and make sure that creditors won't freak out. Markets will take a dip regardless of what happens because Greece has gotten to a point that the ECB did not want Greece to get to. The actual ideal solution depends on what is to prioritized. If Greece's economic growth is to be prioritized the solution will be to actually forgive portions of the debt and screw over the investors. This will help the Greek economy, but it will piss off investors who will be much less likely to invest in Greece or the EU in the future which is why this scenario is just out. If repayment is the priority and keeping creditors happy, the ECB will have to pony up more cash for Greece, and Greece will have to find a way to get its finances under control which is a difficult task. The difficulties lie in two areas for Greece. The first is that a vast percentage of the population in Greece is employed by the government and as such the #1 employer will have to cut back which is going to cause problems for Greece who has no strong industry but a very strong currency. The second problem Greece has is that it has a culture of tax evasion. Greeks don't feel that it is their duty to pay taxes, as a matter of fact there is a strong culture of avoiding ones taxes. This means that Greece will have to find a way to insure it gets its revenue, even while its population does worse off. At the end of the day, Greece shouldn't have been given the money it was asking for, but we are well past that point.
Re:Ask HN: How do you deal with after work fatigue? on Thursday June 25, 2015 @02:27AM (#9776285)
I agree with romanlevin, perhaps this isn't fatigue. Are you certain that you don't have depression? All of the symptoms you are describing can certainly point to it.
Remember that you could also charge them a changing fee if they suddenly want to change the UI, and since your a contractor thats money they'd have to pony up extra. If your fulltime, they would feel like they could pressure you into doing it quickly
Don't take the job, if this is their negotiation strategy imagine what they will do once you are employed. This clearly shows how they intend to operate.

Ask HN: How to survive a horrible tech job while looking for a new one?

Currently, Im in a job that I really hate. There are countless demands on me, and the PM along with the CEO think everything can be done in about a weeks time and thats incredibly generous. I plan on learning my algorithms and data structures which are going to take me about 6 weeks since I've already taken a coursera course on them and want to really brush up. Im wondering how can I better...

( Read More... | 3 comments | 4 points | on HN )
Your reply really helped. I asked because Im in a position where the company is 4 years old, they got initial traction. At this point they want to pivot though, but the current code base does not allow for that because it cannot support the new features.
Re:Ask HN: Do you take Ritalin or Adderall? on Thursday May 07, 2015 @06:05PM (#9508662)
100% disagree I have worked with co-workers who took a lot of adderall due to tolerance and they had to be terminated because they had meth like rageouts. Don't kid yourself, Adderall is an amphetamine just like meth is.
Re:Ask HN: Do senior Node.js developers actually exist? on Thursday May 07, 2015 @05:40PM (#9508497)
Node.JS really hasen't been around that long for there to be the super senior people unlike Java, C++, C.
Get out of the business of being a CTO if you don't know technology. A CTO knows what the tech does and how to code, they are super technical. You could be a CEO or a CMO instead without being technical. CTO with no technical experience is a train wreck in progress.
Refactor, there are 3 modules that cause 75% of the crashes.
The original engineer who came up with the code has laid out several key areas that need serious reworking within the documentation. The code base is a few years old and 30% of it is deprecated. In order to implement the new features, the code base will have to be refactored to better accommodate those features since the current code base has no such ability to accommodate such features.

Ask HN: How to inform management about much needed refactors

My situation is that I've recently been hired by a startup that hasen't maintained its code base for 3 years. Im unable to actually add any new features to the mobile app until I refactor the code base into a much more manageable state, but this is super unpopular with the CEO and project manager who both think that there is no business case for a refactor since they need features.
