Agreed. If you're on AWS, CloudWatch can get really expensive really quickly.
Re:Is Cancer on the Rise Among Younger Adults? on Monday September 11, 2023 @10:45AM (#37468053)
The study about rising young adult cancer cases linked in this article hit the front page of HN recently, and I think that this article does a good job of providing a data-based approach to summarizing/analyzing that study.
Just tax carbon and everyone can decide with their wallets just how much they want to eat meat or imported Peruvian fruits
Re:Who is still inside the metaverse? on Monday March 20, 2023 @11:18AM (#35232780)
As with all of these articles that follow this same script, the author conflates "the metaverse" and all of the monetary investment being made in Reality Labs with just Horizon Worlds. Makes it hard to take anything said in this article seriously.

As others have already commented, most of that money has gone towards longer-term bets on hardware and other investments. A small percentage of that $36 billion mentioned by the author was directed towards Horizon Worlds.

I own a rental property, and I have a property manager who handles the day-to-day operation. The money I've put towards the rental would have performed better if it would have gone towards an index fund instead and would have been lower stress that way, but I like the feeling of having at least some "diversified" assets in real estate.

I've also made a couple games in my free time ("Dodge the Wall!" on Steam and "Cup Pong AR" on iOS/Android). Those games have been a great way to make ~tens of dollars.

The best way that I've made passive income is just through boring Vanguard index funds/target date funds.
