If I recall correctly, the European Parliament doesn't have the power to introduce new legislation on its own. Instead, they can ask the Commission to present legislative proposals. This might be what's happening here...
Re:Venice without water on Sunday February 04, 2018 @06:25PM (#16305549)
Motherboard made a documentary about this and what could happen to Venice in the next 100 years, but it's only available in Italian as far as I'm aware: https://video.vice.com/it/video/venezia-2100/59e606b5177dd46...
And leave one of the biggest markets in the world? Why would they?
Re:AdNauseam – Clicking Ads So You Don't Have To on Sunday August 27, 2017 @05:43AM (#15109987)
I consider all forms of advertising that distract me from the content I'm looking for bad for me. I don't want flashy colored banners telling me what I should buy. There's already plenty, plenty of distractions already, and advertising is one of the poorest forms of it. I don't think I'd mind if advertising, in its current form, died.
Re:How can you program if you're blind? (2013) on Wednesday July 05, 2017 @10:56AM (#14702859)
I've seen blind CS students use a combination of braille displays and screen readers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refreshable_braille_display
Re:Show HN: Get Paid to Build Your Next Side Project on Wednesday June 14, 2017 @01:43PM (#14554465)
I find Krita to be a more user-friendly program than The Gimp, though it's more painting-oriented: https://krita.org/
The article doesn't portray a realistic view of crime rates in Italy - they say "violent death is commonplace", but I don't think that's ever been true, and it certainly isn't now.

Be careful, as always, but Italy isn't an especially dangerous place. Some regions have higher crime rates than others, but even then, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

It's nice to see this - I'm definitely interested in seeing computers built and designed for Linux.

I must say, however, I don't see that need for desktops. Custom desktops are relatively easy to build, even for customers.

A well designed linux laptop, with no driver issues, good build quality, that doesn't sacrifice performance for thinness? That's what I'm missing.

Re:Nintendo to Double Production of Switch Console on Friday March 17, 2017 @04:08AM (#13892346)
Why would you buy a Wii U now? It costs basically the same, but it's out of production and won't get any new games.
Re:Chrome Widevine DRM can no longer be disabled on Sunday January 29, 2017 @06:20PM (#13517434)
Just switch to Firefox. This kind of stuff is why we need plurality in the browser space, and Mozilla is one of the few companies that takes - or has to take - a pro-user stance on many issues.
Re:GIMP – 2016 in review on Tuesday January 17, 2017 @04:46AM (#13416201)
For those who are more interested in digital painting rather than image editing, I found Krita impressive in its capabilities and progress: https://krita.org

I'm just an hobbyist, but I like having FOSS alternatives to Photoshop.

Re:Stop Obsessing Over Comments On Hacker News (2015) on Friday December 30, 2016 @12:10PM (#13285489)
What I would find interesting is not just the positive\negative ratio of comments for successful projects, but also a comparison with less successful\failed ones.

Do successful projects receive more positive comments?

Re:Ask HN: What are you thankful for? on Friday November 25, 2016 @04:00AM (#13035239)
I'm thankful for everyone that decided to contribute to the world by sharing information freely, be it knowledge, software, entertainment...

Those are my heroes, small and big.

Re:Nintendo’s method of making games [video] on Friday November 11, 2016 @11:04AM (#12931839)
You might want to take a look at Haxe and the OpenFL library!
Re:Ask HN: POTUS Donald Trump; What this means to Silicon Valley on Wednesday November 09, 2016 @05:50AM (#12909110)
How come?
You most likely have to pay taxes in the country you're living in\working from, however.
Re:Linux Market Share on Desktop on Thursday October 27, 2016 @10:12AM (#12805226)
I use elementary OS Loki daily and am pretty satisfied with it. It has a few things that I'm not totally happy with, but it's my favourite OS right now.
Re:Nintendo Switch – New Video Game System [video] on Thursday October 20, 2016 @01:07PM (#12754101)
The Gamecube was far from modest for its time - IIRC, it was the most powerful console until the Xbox came along.
Re:From Mac to Linux: Web Development with Linux on Monday October 17, 2016 @09:03AM (#12724616)
Nothing can replace anything, but if you're looking for Photoshop alternatives, check out Krita. It's mainly focused on painting, but I've found it to be much nicer than Gimp.
Re:Apple Has Removed Dash from the App Store on Wednesday October 05, 2016 @06:44PM (#12648603)
You don't necessarily need a walled garden to solve that problem - package managers on Linux distribution do the same. It needs the appropriate user experience for non-technical users.
Re:Apple should stop selling four-year-old computers on Sunday August 07, 2016 @02:00PM (#12242914)
Is 'fast enough' worth it for an expensive laptop such as a MacBook Pro? I'm not sure.

Personally I'd really like to see more powerful GPUs in MacBooks...

To me this feels like a... difference between depression and sadness.

Personally I tend to think of depression as draining; it takes out your energy, your willingness to live your life and push through. Like you said, emptiness.

Sadness feels... sad, it brings you down, but it doesn't necessarily affect you in the same 'draining' way.

Re:Virtual Reality Aimed at the Elderly Finds New Fans on Friday July 08, 2016 @12:39PM (#12056798)
In VR you could meet real people, though - I don't think it's quite the same.
