As we all know, LOC as a metric has been around for ages, usually pushed by managers who don't understand development wanting some indicator that you are working hard.

It's no surprise that the same people are now using the same metric against LLMs except this time the LLM isn't telling them it's a daft measurement.

Re:Project Glasswing: An Initial Update on Sunday May 24, 2026 @03:37AM (#48255304)
Reminds me of the contracts we sign with off-shore development companies to write the software at one rate and then fix bugs at a higher rate. Won’t be long till tokens spent on security review agents cost more than the tokens to create the bugs in the first place.
Re:How University Students Use Claude on Thursday April 10, 2025 @03:30AM (#43641559)
As someone already said, parents used to be concerned that kids wouldn't be able to solve maths problems without a calculator, and it's the same problem, but there's a difference between solving problems _with_ LLMs, and having LLMs solve it _for you_.

I don't see the former as that much of a problem.

Re:Touchscreens are out, and tactile controls are back on Monday November 04, 2024 @06:21AM (#42040532)
For me the idea of any kind of interface in vehicles should tend toward audio anyway. Anything that takes your attention away from the road, wether it's tactile or touchscreen is a potential distraction.

Voice control seems the obvious solution but there are probably better ideas, especially as someone who's accent confuses all but the best recognition, or well trained, software. I end up talking in an "American" accent to my car ... but then I do enjoy pretending I'm Michael Knight.

Re:Tracking supermarket prices with Playwright on Wednesday August 07, 2024 @06:40AM (#41179974)
I did something very similar but for the price of wood from sellers here in the UK but instead of Platwright, which I'd never heard of at the time, I used NodeRED.

You just reminded me, it's probably still running today :-D

This headline is misleading. According to the article schools CAN still use Chromebooks but they cannot enable the tracking functionality on them.

"From 1 August 2024 onwards, Danish schools will no longer be allowed to enable Chromebooks and Google platforms to collect students' personal data for processing."

and how many times has AP avoided accidents the driver wouldn't? The stats arn't that simple any more are they.

There are plenty more news articles, especially in local news, about fatalities involving non autopilot cars, but they're not as interesting so don't get shared as often.

I'm surprised FIFA never gets scrutinised in this was, it's an £80 game each year and to make any kind of impression you need to buy packs.

I watched my son once where he literally spent what I'd given him on packs, looked at what he'd "won" and sold them all instantly for in game currency. When I asked why he didn't use any of them he said they were no good. He then repeated the same process on the rest of the packs, keeping maybe 1 player.

It reminds me of the behaviour of people addicted to slot machines, literally pumping in coins, recycling their winnings until they have nothing left.

After the Battlefront 2 debacle, EA said they were abandoning loot boxes and wouldn't do pay to win any more. They appear to have avoided it with Battlefield V, but FIFA still stands as the Daddy when it comes to pay to win and it needs to be destroyed.

Re:Department Of Dirty on Wednesday July 23, 2014 @11:21AM (#8074825)
It's not really the start of the protest, ORG have been doing some great stuff recently with Blocked.org.uk (which is where the data for this campaign comes from)
Re:Suicidal Software Developer on Wednesday June 18, 2014 @11:34AM (#7910692)
YOU NEED TO GO AND SEE YOUR GP ... RIGHT NOW.

Please, go and see them, tell them what you just told us and they will help you.

Re:Ask HN: Help. I need to go away from here on Thursday January 23, 2014 @12:01PM (#7109350)
Do you go to any of the tech events in Sheffield? I co-organise ShefPHP and sometimes go to some of the others.
Re:Ask HN: Help. I need to go away from here on Thursday January 23, 2014 @08:13AM (#7107903)
If you're coming to the UK, don't limit yourself to just London, there are equally vibrant tech scenes in other cities like Sheffield (where I live), Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Liverpool and many more.
Shopping around for broadband in the UK is not difficult, broadbandchoices, MoneySavingExpert, uSwitch & MoneySupermarket are 4 places I know off the top of my head where you can type in your phone number & it gives you a list of providers, and there always "cheap broadband uk" in Google too.
It could, but the title says they have done it, which they haven't.
It doesn't really matter how safe a constituency is, there was an election, we voted, this is what we got.

To change that people will have to change the way people vote. Maybe one of the things the next candidate for Devizes can do is campaign on Claire's lack of understanding of technology and the impact that has on her ability to be an MP.

"We live in a society absolutely dependent on science and technology and yet have cleverly arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. That's a clear prescription for disaster." - Carl Sagan.

It seems he had several different versions of this quote from different publications, but they're all equally applicable.

I am reminded of the fact though that we voted for this! I wonder if any of the other parties, the fringe parties like the Greens or the Pirate Party could do any better?

Carl Sagan once famously said "We live in a society dependent on science & technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science & technology" Nowhere is this more true than in Parliament!

Doesn't Google's "Safe Search already do this?
Re:OpenPGP JavaScript implementation on Thursday May 30, 2013 @05:32AM (#5791603)
I really hope this takes off, there have been several efforts to bring PKS & PKE to the browser than have unfortunately just withered & died.

WebPG (http://webpg.org/) is the best implementation so far for GMail integration, and as far as I can tell it's the only one still being developed, but it falls over at the last hurdle, it won't send the email :)

As a resident of the UK, with our governments boner for introducing a snoopers charter this kind of thing really interests me.

Re:DWP - Services and benefits online on Thursday May 02, 2013 @04:33AM (#5643265)
To be fair to the DWP, this is their old site.

One of the things the British Government is doing properly at the moment is their digital strategy, their new web site gov.uk has won multiple awards.

If you go to the DWP's home page it does tell you it's an old site, and should probably redirect, but it's unfair to criticise something that's not the current implementation. Most of the links from that front page go to the new gov.uk version, and I guess you'd have to work hard to find that error page if it wasn't already bookmarked.

Didn't The Register do one called Salmon Days too?
Re:2012: A Year in PHP on Tuesday January 08, 2013 @08:32PM (#5029619)
You can tar a whole language as bad because some of it's users use it to write bad code, otherwise you'd be talking about all languages.
Re:Teller on theft in magic on Wednesday September 19, 2012 @06:35AM (#4542966)
As other people have mentioned Penn & Teller don't have a problem with people copying their ideas & improving them or performing them in a different way.

The problem here is that the chap was then SELLING the trick for thousands of dollars, that's where Teller started to have a problem with it.

Re:Ask HN: Why don't you use PKS to sign your email? on Wednesday August 22, 2012 @04:13AM (#4416467)
Thanks for the reply, I'm gathering info for a project to see if I can't do something about these kinds of things ... a huge task I know, but I feel i can make a start in at least better educating people on what PKS is.
Re:Ask HN: Why don't you use PKS to sign your email? on Wednesday August 22, 2012 @04:11AM (#4416461)
I agree, creating or importing keys should be done as part of the setup wizard, alongside entering your email address & password.

Ask HN: Why don't you use PKS to sign your email?

What is it that stops most people from using GPG or a similar system to sign their email?I know why your common or garden user might not, but I often wonder why, with sites like gpgtools or gpg4win that make install & keygen simpler, more technical people haven't adopted PKS.So, what stops you signing your emails?

Re:BBC News - Can statistics help catch terrorists? on Friday January 22, 2010 @06:32PM (#1070986)
The BBCs More or Less is an excellent podcast, they like to go over the stats the media and politicians produce and give more in depth coverage than the soundbites stats are usually contained in.

Golf, lots and lots of golf.
Re:Ask HN: Which company do you wish had a developer API? on Sunday February 08, 2009 @02:08PM (#472343)
The UK government. There's so much information held in their records that would be great to get at through an API.

Can I include all the bodies funded by the government, like the Royal Mail (for their postcode db), Ordnance Survey (for their map data) to name a couple. They're funded by our taxes, so why not allow free access to it?
