Re:Tyler Cowen is a curator of talent on Wednesday September 01, 2021 @03:22PM (#28384443)
This reminds me of a debate we're having in Sweden presently around architecture. Most contemporary architects seem to prefer buildings as big concrete blocks while most "common folk" would prefer something... less modern? A perfect example is the new art museum which you can see here https://www.svd.se/liljevalchs-tillbyggnad--ett-bankvalv-for.... I personally find it revolting, but am I then the person without taste?
Re:Pencil Project – open-source GUI prototyping tool on Friday May 07, 2021 @01:47AM (#27072642)
I had the same experience with Pencil, but switched to the desktop version of Draw.io https://github.com/jgraph/drawio-desktop/ which I really like and recommend.
Re:Parler’s downloads fell off a cliff on Friday December 11, 2020 @01:53PM (#25389231)
I find this interesting, Why is Parler a right-wing thing? Why do right-wingers feel the need for a different platform without censorship? Why doesn't left wing people feel the same need? I would assume both wings are equally censored?

For what it is worth, I'm not on either platform and I'm convinced platforms such as these are a net-negative for humankind. I understand this is super-political and may not lend itself to an online discussion.

Out of curiosity, in what way is Wil Wheaton incredibly toxic and how does he turn people to the alt-right? I did some googling, but couldn't find anything specific.
Re:Sweden Drops Julian Assange Rape Investigation on Tuesday November 19, 2019 @10:06AM (#21573509)
I understand you feel Swedish law is too harsh on this, but surely that is besides the point since Assange was in Sweden at the time of the alleged crime? It doesn't really matter if his actions qualifies as rape in any other country or not if they do in Sweden (which was for the courts to decide).
Re:I Can Eat Glass on Tuesday October 01, 2019 @03:19AM (#21122795)
Not sure if this is a joke or a mistake since the English "glass" is "glas" in Swedish, but the Swedish "glass" is "ice cream" in English. The correct translation in Swedish would be "Jag kan äta glas, det skadar inte mig".
Re:Yellow vests knock out 60% of all speed cameras in France on Friday January 11, 2019 @04:50AM (#18882160)
You are correct on Finland, you are wrong on Sweden. In fact, Sweden is not even mentioned in your source so not sure where you got it from.
Re:Yellow vests knock out 60% of all speed cameras in France on Friday January 11, 2019 @04:45AM (#18882131)
Finland does. Sweden and Denmark do not. Norway I don't know, but suspect not.

Source: I live in Sweden and recently got caught by a speed camera in Denmark.

The Swedish Bank ID also disallows copy/paste of passwords. When I contacted the company that builds the solution I got more or less the same response, "it is safer for normal users" which I didn't really understand. Highly annoying.

Will EU do this though? Seems strange to allow UK both to be in and out of the EU at the same time.

Re:Facebook – You are the Product on Wednesday August 16, 2017 @03:19PM (#15030328)
Would the future then not hold social media that were invite-only in some way?
It would be nice of you to provide some sources for your claims. I don't know if you are right or not, but at least providing links to the articles you are referring to would be appreciated.
He is going to a conference obviously, but how does he prove that his intent is "purely non-immigrant" besides that? I mean, it seems to me this could be used to deny anyone entry since you can't very well prove it (I think) if it is not enough that you say that you are not trying to work or immigrate.

Or am I misunderstanding something?

Please provide sources for your statement that "3/4 of university opportunities goes to women". I did a quick check at SCB which keep these kinds of statistics for Sweden and I can't find any support for it. I also tried to find support for your statement on parental disputes, but the numbers I could find differs from yours there as well.

There have been many discussions on trying to even the gender-gap for certain professions, for example getting more men to be teachers (or getting more women interested in IT). I do not know how successful they are or if they are worthwhile, but I don't see a clear gender bias.

I find it interesting and telling that you don't present any sources for your argument. Which paper in Sweden does the "Swedish intellectuals" read now? I think it is still DN, but would be interested to hear your sourced argument why this isn't true.
I think the point OP is trying to make is that it is very easy to eat in excess (calorie-wise) to what you are burning by training since physical activity will often make you crave more food. Doing some kind of training is obviously good for you, but you will not necessarily lose weight if you don't restrict your caloric intake.

Just like intelligence differs, your ability to gain or lose weight is not the same as other peoples'. In my experience it is not fair, but on the other hand, what is?

I would recommend something like the slow carb diet (Tim Ferriss), but anything that restrict your intake of calories and that you feel you can sustain over a long period of time is good.

This essay validates my decision to never create a Facebook account in the first place. I understand that this is not the authors conclusion, but it is my conclusion from reading the essay. I do not want to be a part of that eco system.
If you are going out into a public park surely you must expect to meet other people and the inconvenience that may cause you? I would also think that the pollution from cars (or from the leaf blower or any other equipment used to keep the park nice) would be a much bigger concern than anyone vaping? I imagine it must be terribly annoying living close to other people if you are disturbed by such minor things, but perhaps I'm wrong.
Re:How foreign governments spy using PowerPoint and Twitter on Tuesday August 02, 2016 @04:04PM (#12212909)
I feel this is a straw man. I'm Swedish, but have always loved the US for some strange reason. I still do, but that doesn't mean that the US is perfect in any way, shape or form. It is a fantastic country with many flaws. You are obviously right in much of what you write, but that does not excuse a lot of the things that NSA et. al. does in the name of freedom. My point is just that we should not hold ourselves to the lowest of standards ("We're better than <non-democratic country" is not a good excuse).
Regardless if this is a made-up story or not I think there are a few lessons here:

1. Exceptions are hard. While I don't believe in rules that can never be broken/circumvented in these types of situations you, as a manager, need to be aware that one exception will lead to having to make more exceptions. That is, to me, one of the skills of a good manager, being able to make exceptions when needed and give a good argument for not giving exceptions when not possible.

2. Empathy is critical. A manager without empathy (in the sense of being able to understand something from the other person's point-of-view) is generally not a good manager of people. The manager that is asking the question did obviously not understand how important the graduation was to the employee.

3. Don't rationalise punishment (meaning, calling the person afterwards just to make sure they understand how wrong they are and how right you are) with concern in your own mind. A good manager needs to examine and understand their own motivations for doing something.

4. Don't be afraid to admit your own mistakes as a manager. I'm pretty sure you can salvage this situation by meeting with the person, apologizing and probably giving them a well-deserved raise (since it was your best employee). You do not lose by doing that, it is not a competition.

5. Don't foster a culture where people will not help each other out. I find it very strange that a person that is a very good employee and that has helped other people numerous times (according to the question) has such a hard time finding someone to help them out. It could be because of the employee of course, but she should have been recognized in front of the team for her willingness to help out long before this.

Re:Ask HN: Do you take antidepressants? on Sunday June 19, 2016 @05:22PM (#11934737)
I have and they helped me, but they are not a cure-all. If you are depressed you need to talk a good psychologist/psychotherapist as well as taking the medication. It was a bit of hassle to get off them, I might add.

To me the important thing is treating depression the same way as any other health-issue; go to a doctor, be open and honest and try what they prescribe you.

My email-address is in my profile if you have specific questions.

...and take care of yourself. You are precious although you may not feel it right now.

edit: also, it should not be relevant for you if 9%, 90% or 99% of HN are on medication for depression, either you need it or you don't, but other peoples' needs do not factor in.

Re:L-Theanine Experiment (1 Month) on Thursday December 03, 2015 @07:24AM (#10669208)
Fair enough. My impression was that this was the first of many similar experiments, but with different substances making my question perhaps more valid somewhere down the line.
Re:L-Theanine Experiment (1 Month) on Thursday December 03, 2015 @07:21AM (#10669198)
You can order L-Theanine (L-Teanin) in Sweden without any issues. You will just have to figure out the double-blind part.
Re:L-Theanine Experiment (1 Month) on Thursday December 03, 2015 @05:43AM (#10668902)
I love the idea, but the execution seems less than ideal. Besides the research ethics question posed in another comment, what is the dosage of L-Theanine in the capsules? What kind of responsibility does the company take for possible side effects? I understand the side effects should be mild or non-existant in the experiment for L-Theanine, but just a discussion around that issue would be nice.

Again, I want to stress that I love the idea, but the web site just feels incomplete.

Re:A Strong Welfare State Produces More Entrepreneurs on Thursday March 26, 2015 @01:37PM (#9271539)
I am European (Swedish), but I have a hard time wrapping my head around the notion that the welfare state would produce more innovation/entrepreneurs. We have a large public discussion here in Sweden that we need to create more new companies and we definitely have a welfare state.

I would argue that a welfare state COULD be helping entrepreneurs, but that depends where all the taxation for the welfare state comes from. In Sweden it is very expensive to hire people for example, and it is also very hard to fire people (besides the point, taxation-wise, but still), The companies that hire people pay a large part of the welfare state. This makes it very hard to grow a company since it is so very expensive to hire.
