The Singularity Will Not Be Televised
I agree with you on that. In ChatGPT's answer, for me only names and keywords are relevant, which I can then use to start another search, and I ignore the rest of the “noise”. I was also more trying to show with my post that I occasionally use A.I. when I can only vaguely remember something and thus am not even sure what the right search terms for a classic web search would be. Like humans, ChatGPT is often able to extract the right information from imprecise, anecdotal messages and then provide suitable answers that I can then use for my further search.
When I don't get something useful with search terms, I often try to ask AI like ChatGPT:

> One famous case that somewhat aligns with this is the Société Générale trading scandal involving Jérôme Kerviel. Kerviel, a former trader at Société Générale, used his knowledge of the bank's systems to make unauthorized trades worth billions of euros, though it was more complex than just modifying a VB script in Excel.

"Obscurest Vinyl" has 249,608 monthly listeners on Spotify. No one is interested in the humans behind their hit "I Glued My Balls To My Butthole Again".

For everyone who is tired of Day-o, I recommend the song Star-o!

Half an hour ago it worked and now it refuses to create such content. Seems that they are starting to block some types of text. Same with "explain … in the style of soviet propaganda" or "write a song about …". All worked half an hour ago

If you don't see that as a fun past-time activity and still want to use emacs, then I would recommend spacemacs.

Re:Clojure Scripting on Node.js on Friday August 05, 2022 @02:53AM (#32352639)
Clojure/Clojurescript is a functional lisp dialect and therefore brings you more and other ways to write programs, since it defers much from javascript/typescript. But I think another question would be "why do you need nbb for clojurescript?". The minimal answer is: clojure has slow startup time, and clojurescript need some tooling to produce runnable code. With nbb (or bb for clojure) you can run Clojurescript as a scripting language in the terminal, like python or shell, and still use some libraries both from the nodejs or clojure(-script) ecosystem.
Re:Ask HN: How have you deGoogled your life? on Friday July 15, 2022 @08:30AM (#32107392)
Moving away from Gmail was easy for me. Get a new address at a reliable provider or self host. And then you can use Gmail's own Mail-forwarding functionality to forward everything to your new mail address, and theres also an option to delete the copy at gmail. Whenever you have time, set the new address at your accounts. And after a year or two you have changed all accounts and can delete your gmail address. A slow change is better than no change.

This is hosted on the website of Mary S. Van Deusen, who seems to be the editor of the Journal where this article was published in. I really recommend looking at the other parts of her website[1], especially if you're interested in the history of computer science / programming [2]. Her YouTube Channel also contains interesting Videos [3]. I'm too young and did not live at that time, but I'm happy that she preserves these materials.

Re:Meat Loaf, 'Bat Out Of Hell' singer, has died at 74 on Friday January 21, 2022 @06:03AM (#30021921)
In an April '21 Interview he more or less prefigured his death:

"After he [Jim Steinman] died, his nurse, Mary Beth, left me a message saying how much he loved me. She said I was the one person he needed more than anyone else in his life. I don’t want to die, but I may die this year because of Jim. I’m always with him and he’s right here with me now. I’ve always been with Jim and Jim has always been with me."

Re:Ask HN: How do you cope with being interupted? on Sunday January 02, 2022 @06:40AM (#29767922)
Sounds familiar. I often do the 'real work' in the late evening hours, when the world is quiet. So, you allow work to happen in your free time - are there limitations what types of personal activities you allow yourself in your normal work time (the time where you have to be reachable). I'm just curious because erasing the split between work and life is often in favor of work.

Re:Why Rust Is the Future of Game Development on Monday November 09, 2020 @01:18PM (#25037765)
Minecraft is a good example where people talk about the programming language. The portability of Java was a benefit for both Server and Client. But it was also critized because of the inefficiency of Java.

I dont know if all this would have been better in Rust or other languages.

Re:The 5.7 kernel is out on Monday June 01, 2020 @03:00PM (#23382313)
I use Fedora with dnf automatic[1] on all of my machines. Only problem is my Desktop PC, which has a nvidia gpu with the official nvidia driver installed. Every few weeks there is a new kernel version which often only works with the brand new nvidia driver version. I use grub to choose the previous working kernel version until I take the time to download and install the new nvidia driver.

[1]https://dnf.readthedocs.io/en/latest/automatic.html

Great Idea. Bug Report: if I search for "Software" and then go to page two, the url does not include the search-term, which leads to a "ValueError at /search/"

That debug/error page shows a traceback and many server settings, which you might not want to share in a production environment.

For more complex state handling in SPAs (subscription, event handling) re-frame is a really great framework based on reagent/cljs.

Re:My struggle to learn React on Wednesday May 09, 2018 @05:22PM (#17034218)
> I don't see a point in having very similar, but not 100% compatible languages on backend and frontend.

I have an applications consisting of frontend cljs code, backend clj code and some code that will be compiled to both ends (called cljc). Even if its not 100% compatible, I think its helpful that I only have to write data validation (e.g. clojure.spec) once and can use it in every part of the system. Also if you wrote pure algorithms for complex data structures, its nice to use it in cljs and clj. The parts that are missing to 100%, can often be bypassed with a simple reader conditional (https://clojure.org/guides/reader_conditionals).

> Some time ago (a year or two, I think?) CLJS got bootstrapped - is it finally possible (and practical) to use with node only?

I dont have much experience with this, but I think that shadow-cljs (http://shadow-cljs.org/) will make this mostly possible.

Re:My struggle to learn React on Wednesday May 09, 2018 @04:52PM (#17033972)
I'm glad that my comment gave you some motivation. CLJS also had a steep learning curve for me. There are a thousand different aspects to learn, but just start with a template or example app and try to understand everything step by step. Maybe the re-frame template (https://github.com/Day8/re-frame-template) will give you a good framework for building your first webapp. And if you get stuck, just visit http://clojurians.net/ - very helpful community. Good luck!
