You're not far off. Anecdotal but I shared the Anthropic demo video and a few articles in a company slack and a lot of PM's/admin folks that are only tangentially aware of LLM powered use cases at this point shared that sentiment. Welcome to the party folks!

Very cute and charming, random offensive content from anonymous users not withstanding. I was pleasantly surprised that zooming with the browser works relatively well to help make things a bit clearer and easier to rid. I had to squint pretty hard by default.

Hatchet was one of my favorite books growing up. I believe the first time I read it I was in 4th grade if that helps you gage (it was pretty common in 4th and 5th grades if I recall correctly). That said, my mother was a librarian and didn't care what I read as long as I was reading (including Faulkner and East of Eden when I was in 6th grade which was way too mature for that age :-)) so depending on your son maturity your milage may vary. That said, Hatchet is a great a book and I give it some credit to my life long love of the outdoors and adventure.

I've only heard it used as a synonym to "jittery" or hyper-active in my region of the states (mid-west). Good to know it's considered offensive in places, not that I really use the word. I had a colleague in school that had the nickname of "spaz". Mostly it was used ironically because they were super laid back all the time.

Was going to post the same. I can't go a week without listening to Bill, Chick or Hiromi at some point. There is a YouTube video of dualing pianos with Chick and Hiromi, it's one of my most watched. They are both just out of this world.

I mostly agree but I also think AWS is probably more in the public consciousness than most people would think (in the US anyway). They have TV advertisement slots with NFL for crying out loud. That said, most people probably don't actually know what it is, just that they've heard of it.
As "cloud" and "AI" become more and more accepted generic terms for technology to the public and I think AWS may even over take the PR position.

This is the first thing that came to my mind reading the headline as well. I'm sure Apple has a head start on R&D and of course they are an amazing organization with plenty of resources but overcoming the engineering challenges required to implement a self-driving electric car in 5 years is optimistic to my mind.

To be fair, Red Dead has it's fair share of bugs as well, especially on release. I agree with you in that I don't think I've ever played a large open world game that didn't have a lot of bugs and I'm not an overly observant gamer. Skyrim was the same way. It's just none of them ruin the experience in a way that Cyberpunk for consoles has. I've been playing it on PC and love it but can understand why people are upset regarding the experience on consoles.
Re:Choose Boring Technology

The other point that could go along with this is that often, based on constraints like cost and time, most people can develop a more stable solution using tools they know vs tools that are new to them. It takes time and often working through a lot of mistakes to come to grips with a new technology. Sometimes it's better to use what you/team understands assuming it's still the right fit for the problem. That goes beyond tech industry as well.
Re:Design Docs at Google

Great article, generating consistent design docs that are both useful and not too time-consuming to create is something I am constantly working on. One thing I struggle with is finding examples of what others are doing in the industry. Does anyone have any resources they've found that provide examples of real-world design documents? Obviously each project is different but I'd be curious if others out there are publishing their templates/outlines of what they typically start with similar to this article.
I feel like blog posts seem to serve this niche for a lot of open source projects but it would be interesting to see if anyone has found more structured examples.

Chip and signature is the norm in brick and mortar stores in the USA. Even then, many purchases will not require a signature unless the transaction is over a certain amount, typically $50. Many card issuers were too nervous to go full chip and pin in US markets for whatever reason.

Most enterprise's on .NET are windows shops. There is very little incentive in my opinion to run .NET core when you're a windows shop as it doesn't provide any real-world benefits/features yet that are beyond what you get from the full .NET framework. .NET Core's story as it stands is making .NET properly cross-platform. If you don't need cross-platform at the moment you don't net .NET core in my opinion.
Re:Amazon files patent for flying warehouse
on Thursday December 29, 2016 @04:45PM (#13280415)
According to the patent, the drones would not fly back up to the airship but rather they would fly to collection center on land, be loaded into a smaller ship with other supplies and then flown back to the large airship. Presumably with the energy saved from gliding rather than flying to their delivery destination they'd have more range to make it to collection centers that are more sparse then if they just flew back and forth from the centers themselves.

Well to be fair, I think many people consider the snacks (soda, popcorn, candy) to be part of the movie going experience so it's hard to resist the urge to splurge. You're not wrong but there is a lot of years of marketing and persuasion behind "lets all go to the lobby..."

Totally anecdotal but I had the same experience. Playing Pokemon Go prompted me to go on a nostalgia-fest and purchase red and green on VC for my 3DS. I wouldn't be surprised if the core game sales are seeing an uptick from the interest around Pokemon Go if for no reason other than it reminds those of us that were around for the original Pokemon surge.
Re:Home Depot Files Antitrust Lawsuit Against Visa, MasterCard
on Friday June 17, 2016 @04:39PM (#11925407)
This is closer to the core issue in my opinion. Wal-Mart and Home Depot do not want to support processing EMV Debit cards as credit. Most debit processing rails require PIN data to process the transaction. Running a debit card using the signature CVM means processing the transaction over credit networks which costs the retailer more and is more profitable for the issuers.
This is the main reason retailers want to use Chip and PIN all the time and drop signature. It would mean they could simply run debit transactions over debit rails all the time which would cost them less. Obviously the issuers want the opposite since processing over debit rails is less profitable for them.

Re:MagSpoof – wireless credit card/magstripe spoofer
on Wednesday November 25, 2015 @09:32AM (#10627317)
You're correct. From my understanding, most issuers have determined that Chip and Signature is secure enough for the US market provided they support DDA. Both of my EMV cards do not even provide a way to create a PIN for them. It will most like be this way for a year or two.
Re:MagSpoof – wireless credit card/magstripe spoofer
on Wednesday November 25, 2015 @09:27AM (#10627294)
This would only be an issue for those that don't authorize with the issuer immediately when the card is read. The issuer would know the service code read by the pin pad and should be able to determine that it is incorrect based on the PAN read by the pin pad and the fact that the merchant is certified to support EMV. They could choose to decline the authorization at that point. Most payment processors that I'm aware of in the US do this.
