Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @10:45AM (#50260187)
Why instead?

All those should absolutely be addressed (especially taxes), but organizing labor could be both a powerful way to push for those changes, as well as a force to maintain better labor/capital balance going forward.

Re:Using AI to reverse engineer hardware on Friday October 16, 2026 @12:20PM (#50120359)
The Klon was never $3k new.

That happened on the used market after they were no longer manufactured, and the original was seen on a few idolized players' boards.

And there have been Klon clones for ages, including a follow on version by the original designer.

Use, yes. Or with pretty much any JDK. It just isn't included as part of the JDK like AWT & Swing anymore.
TIOBE rankings are meaningless.
Yep, and heck, on occasion we even enforce them.

When we do, it can be pretty effective.

I just wish we did so more frequently, and, more importantly, that the consumer welfare principle hadn't emerged as the prevalent antitrust standard.

Re:No AI Fridays on Sunday August 30, 2026 @10:10AM (#49498818)
I support this.

I also support No GenAI every day ending in a Y, but I support this, too.

Works for me. No Tesla it is, then.

Not the only reason, but one of several.

Re:Silicon Valley is in denial in face of widespread backlash on Thursday August 27, 2026 @07:00PM (#49472377)
Because the negative externalities of GenAI are great enough that the majority will soon recognize them and demand action.

But I don't expect that to slow down any of the main drivers for now. Some have too much invested monetarily and emotionally, others have been caught up in the hype cycle.

Re:Silicon Valley is in denial in face of widespread backlash on Thursday August 27, 2026 @05:06PM (#49471266)
Are you trying to dismiss Flock and the like as not worthy of outrage?
Re:Silicon Valley is in denial in face of widespread backlash on Thursday August 27, 2026 @05:04PM (#49471242)
The industry needs to come to grips with the fact that many, many people either have no use for or actively despise GenAI.
Yeah, exactly.

Who can expect smol bean Meta to not act like rapacious vultures when all the other social media corporations get to?

Re:Why tech bosses keep sharing their manifestos about AI on Saturday August 15, 2026 @05:09PM (#49314364)
Raises or asks, not begs, but in response: no friends.

AI is not capable of being my friend, as it doesn't pass the first, most basic requirement: it isn't a person.

Would I welcome more people into my life as friends? Sure. But while I cherish the friends I have, I certainly don't need more. Not just to "have".

And I sure as hell have no need or desire for the empty "friendship" of spicy auto complete.

A website being used in a web browser seems to you like an edge case?! Really?

If that's really a common view, we really did lose the plot.

Re:I Made Tinnitus My Friend (Then It Disappeared) on Monday August 10, 2026 @11:26AM (#49244959)
> I do miss silence!

Yeah, me too.

Mine is most likely from cumulative exposure to loud noise w/o protection before I was 20 (power tools, firearms, fireworks, live rock, punk, & heavy metal, etc.). That or the time I had a bad ear infection with a perforated ear drum (possibly cause by a Cacophony show in a little dive bar).

I used to hear my own pulse, especially when I would meditate, but no chance of that now, with my constant companion high pitched whine.

Stress, excessive alchohol, loud noises, or extended use of earplugs as noise suppression are all sure fire ways for it to make it more severe, but at least the latter isn't as bad, helps avoid the effects of loud noise, and usually the levels go back to "normal" soon after. Excessive alcohol is easy enough to avoid, so that just leaves stress. That's ... less easy to avoid.

Sorry to hear about your particular affliction. At least if it were just one sound it'd be a little easier to occasionally mask or tune out.

One thing that happens to me during particularly bad flare ups (like right now -- is it just me or does thinking about it make it worse?) is that I think I hear things nearby, but it's either mishearing something faint or complete audio hallucinations. One annoyance on top of another!

And yes, the best time to start wearing hearing protection is before your first exposure to potentially damaging noise, but the next best is now!

Re:I Made Tinnitus My Friend (Then It Disappeared) on Sunday August 09, 2026 @06:51PM (#49237026)
It's almost certainly my own damn fault I have it, but after at least 35-40 years dealing with it,tinitus sure as hell isn't my friend.

Mine is high pitched, and varries in intensity but has gotten worse lately. Sometimes it makes jus existing down right hard, but usually it's only moderately annoying and I can mostly ignore it.

I've tried an assortment of sound based methods to mask it or train my brain to tune it out, but nothing has worked more than fleetingly.

The only thing that reliably gives me a break is if I can really focus on something. Music (passive or active), cooking, and programming are the most reliable, but sometimes reading, gaming, or good conversation works. Usually, though, everything is done with a constant backing track of flyback transformer whine.

Wear hearing protection, kids, or you may well live to regret it!

Re:OpenJDK Interim Policy on Generative AI on Thursday July 30, 2026 @09:59AM (#49110147)
You might well end up being right, but if you are, I believe it'll be because "most developers" will have become worse at programming, not because GenAI has become massively better.
And many people find it depressing getting going in the morning when it's still dark.

Plus, in Winter most people at best get off work around dusk anyway.

In addition, most studies indicate health benefits for standard time relative to both switching and permanent DST.

We tried permanent DST back in the 70s, and it sucked. We switched back. If we're going to make a change, it should be to standard time.

As usual, when Congress finally moves to address an issue, they manage to do it in the stupidest possible way. Permanent Standard Time is the better choice in nearly every way.
Re:Are we offloading too much of our thinking to AI? on Tuesday July 14, 2026 @12:02PM (#48908901)
I'm not personally, since I don't use GenAI at all.

Especially given the comments I see here and on other tech and programming forums, I hate the direction things are going.

I still have some hope this will all fade, but the damage done will be worse the longer it goes on, I think.

That would be amazing.

Ubiquitous infinite scroll is one of the things I hate most about "modern" UI design.

Send these teachers to remedial courses in game theory and statistics, please.

What if less that 20% of the class do "exceptional" work? What if more do?

Those pushing this either haven't thought it through, or simply want to be seen to be doing something to address grade inflation, and this is something (just not something useful).

Upvoted because you've captured the overall point pretty well, but I will say that the Flying V can be pretty dang comfortable seated if you hold in the classical position (i.e., resting on your fretting side thigh). I almost always play standing anyway, but when I do sit, I usually rest the guitar (acoustic or electric) on my left leg anyway because I find it more comfortable.

As with most things guitar, it's mostly about what works for the individual player.

Yes, and in fact even Windows conhost hast supported ANSI escapes since 2016.

If it isn't possible to turn any syntax highlighting an the like off, I will personally look for alternatives.

Not reconfigure individual settings, turn off syntax highlighting all together.

It's not about style for me, it's about readability.

If that sentence fragment isn't a dystopian summary of the current state of at least US society, I don't know what is.

Re:Windows native app development is a mess on Sunday March 22, 2026 @10:19AM (#47477783)
To do better?

It's demonstrably possible. And further, why does what some portion of Microsoft, a huge, multi-headed beast, does qualify as the bar for what is reasonable for users to expect?

Huh. Haven't experienced that myself, having used a Master MX for several years (now in use by my wife), a VX Revolution for a few years before that (now my son's backpack mouse), and a Master MX Vertical most recently. My son has gone through several other Logi mice as his primary mice, too, but they've died of either worn out switches or feet (he's an avid gamer).

Not trying to invalidate your experience -- I've see with my own eyes a similar thing happen with rubberized coatings on laptops & keyboard wrist rests (other's not my own).

Just putting it out there that it's by no means the universal experience.

Re:Cecot – 60 Minutes on Tuesday December 23, 2025 @03:40PM (#46369242)
Nope.

We need to bring the entire extraction class to heel. They are degrading, even destroying, society.
