Why not just use Substack. It's great
But that one is not directory-specific, right?

> If a zoned market solely accept Bitcoin and a good costs say 1 BTC

The problem is that nobody selling regular goods WANTS to sell his goods with a fixed bitcoin price; the volatility of bitcoin would make it easy for buyers to buy the goods only when their prices where especially low in non-crazy-volatile currency and resell the goods at a favorable price immediately. There's arbitrage there

What does "PAM" mean?
Re:DNA→RNA: What Do Students Think the Arrow Means? (2014) on Saturday August 21, 2021 @05:21PM (#28260684)
So how does it really work? What does the arrow actually mean?

Is the point that the information on the DNA gets copied onto RNA while the DNA remains intact?

Re:Allegations against Aubrey de Grey on Thursday August 12, 2021 @09:43AM (#28156231)
De Grey has always seemed overly eccentric to me. But maybe that is to be expected of someone that works on something as contrarian as anti-aging research.

Sexual harassment is not okay.

To give him the benefit of the doubt, perhaps it was some kind of lack of social skill on De Greys side rather than actual sexual predatoriness? Am curious what that legal investigation will find out

>for the first time since castles vs. troops without cannon, defense was stronger than offense

In the seminal book "On War" which was published in 1832 and is still required reading in many military academies, Prussian general Carl von Clausewitz explicitly says that defense is stronger than offense.

Maybe this intensified in WWI

This fits my personal experience very well.

I was once a volunteer at the world championships of a team sport. At the podium sceremony my job was to lead the team to the spot where each player received their medal. The bronze medalists were super happy and smiling. Almost all silver medalists that I led to the podium were literally crying.

No sophisticated facial recognition was needed to ascertain who was happier.

>One weird thing with rents Germany is that old contracts have very low rents that barely increase over the years

Does it really work that way all over Germany or is it something specific to Berlin?

Would be interesting to compare this to the environmental impact of having human workers
There are potentially plausible reasons such as that a free economy system could take longer to achieve an efficient market equilibrium compared to a centrally planned system.
>Which is why privacy protection has to come from the top (i.e. regulators), because most people don't know and/or don't care.

I think there should only be legislation about stuff people care about.

If users care about that, they'll go to a vendor that gives them access to the data. No need to legally mandate anything.

Re:Web Authentication Methods Compared on Wednesday December 23, 2020 @03:42PM (#25521972)
I agree the article is confusing wrt state.

Basic Auth is stateless on the client side but not on the server side.

Token auth is stateless on server side; it does not need to store any more public/private key pairs as the number of authenticating users increases. It can just use one. So authenticating users does not affect state

Re:Autism and Invention Are Connected on Monday December 21, 2020 @05:11AM (#25493563)
Reminds me of Peter Thiel's view that autism is useful because it leads to less herd-like thinking/peer-pressure succumb-tion/mimesis. This aspect might be more important than the one this article puts forward i.e. that autists thinking itself lends itself better to being inventive.
Re:Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla and the Unfortunate Implications on Saturday November 21, 2020 @06:46AM (#25169153)
Huh, I didn't know that.

Still, I think it says a lot that they picked these particular historical moments instead of the probably overwhelming history of Asian people doing samurai-ey things

The example I provided shows that people with actual skin in the game think that it impacts the market which to me is one of the best indicators that it actually does.

The impression that I have of people that play such games makes it seem plausible to me.

What would be a comment to your question that you wouldn't consider irrelevant? Should I conduct an experiment and let it be peer reviewed?

I think most people that waste their lives with video games and "make you feel good" fantasies of this kind don't care about historical accuracy; it's not about understanding reality but about feeling good and "engaged". That's what sells.

And yeah, the makers of samurai games definitely consider the marketability of their games with regards to races portrayed. Consider the samurai game "Nioh" which takes place in feudal Japan, has a white protagonists and includes a black character.

Are they serious about pursuing the goal of ending the world? Or is this a joke?

The response to 'How can I help?', namely 'You are surely helping already' seems like the biggest clue to me that this is a joke.

"The easiest way to see this, and this is always my challenge—people don’t agree with this—is challenge you to name me one science fiction film that Hollywood produced in the last 25 years in which technology is portrayed in a positive light, in which it’s not dystopian, it doesn’t kill people, it doesn’t destroy the world, it doesn’t not work, etc., etc."

Interstellar?

"This may explain why sexually-transmitted diseases get so much attention. They're probably the only kind of diseases that hit younger population much harder than senior citizens. THOSE are the diseases that make the rich earn less money."

This seems implausible to me. Given that the rich tend to be of rather old age themselves, I'd wager that they'd invest in preventing their own deaths

These Talebian references got me thinking. Couldn't you argue that it shows a certain arrogance and non-results oriented "falling in love with ideals and tools" detachment from reality to use Clojure instead of good ol' Java?
