I don't quite understand. Is this an active problem for industrial machinery? What exactly is this initiative looking to fix and improve? Besides of the basic idea of FOSS being good, and whatever.

Re:European RISC-V Industrial Computing Initiative on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @02:04AM (#50348964)
"The silicon is here. The industrial computer isn't yet."

"An industrial computer has to do more: survive the control cabinet, talk to the field, and stay available for a decade or longer." Like what?

Do people think this sounds good? Maybe it does, but you and I are just tired from seeing it everywhere?

"Over the past four decades, female enrollment in mortuary programs has grown from five percent to roughly 75 percent of recent graduating classes."

It's dramatic language, but justified, imo.

Good riddance. Like geez.

Reminds me of unlimited cloud storage, abused by people to store terabytes and even petabytes of data.

Fuck off with your condescending assumptions.

Re:Git for US Legislation on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @07:43AM (#50272026)
You don't strictly need git for it.

In Switzerland, at least at the federal level, and since 2020, laws are created in HTML too. You can compare between versions as well as languages.

Swiss Constitution, under "Tools" click on "Version comparison" - https://www.fedlex.admin.ch/eli/cc/1999/404/en

I tired to do something similar, it's somewhat okay (In german)

https://shadowofthepit.github.io/Projekt-Gesetzvergleich/Bun...

Yea, useful info.

But you said it yourself, that's not the point. So why talk about it up at all?

Like, OP could have skipped that tidbit of backstory, but there's no harm done in including it. While you could have skipped this entire reply, which pushes (your/an) idea and a specific view of the world.

And yea, I could have skipped mine too. But... that's not the point, lol.

Funky stuff, nice use of government data.

It would be fascinating to see how my house and town is rendered in-game. Unfortunately, the full map costs 15 CHF o_O

> For legal reasons I sell all of Switzerland only to people who live in Switzerland.

Why tho? Something about the data itself, or because you don't want to bother with international purchases?

Considering that many consoles are initially sold at a loss, but then can begin to make a profit as the hardware becomes outdated (among other things [1])...

What about making it a requirement after some time. What about, after the warranty runs out. And hey, that could also incentivize longer warranties!

> [1] "Typically, when a new games console launches its price point is below the actual cost of manufacturing. But over time, through a combination of bulk component orders and the refining of the hardware design, the cost falls below the retail price. The PS3 was sold at a loss for nearly four years, the PS4 was profitable within six months of its launch, and the PS5 has taken eight months. Considering the novel new design and global chip shortages, that's quite impressive." https://uk.pcmag.com/gaming-systems/134885/sony-says-499-ps5...

Dude.

Regardless of how the data is sourced, this is bad. It's poisoning the internet.

Besides, such issues come from a lack of due diligence, which have only been exacerbated by AI.

Holy shit, it's so accurate.

What I find annoying is that I know how biased I am. And this list reaffirms everything I ever thought about this war, which is just more confirmation bias. Argh!

Re:Publish fake stats, get cited in LLMs on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @10:15AM (#50166808)
This is insane.

How can this be fixed? Nothing prevents you from publishing straight BS, and LLMs will use any site that doesn't have a garbage reputation as a valid third-party source.

Of course, LLMs already use Reddit, Facebook and co. as a source, so it doesn't really matter...

It's borderline pathetic, and I hate it. Somewhat related to renewables, but like, look at Europe pushing towards electric buses. Wow! So good!

It doesn't matter, none of it matters. +90% of the world's electric buses are in China. Like what the fuck. The west could do nothing and it wouldn't make a difference. I wonder sometimes why we even bother.

Their economy has been struggling for a while, having the highest unemployment rate in the EU and a large deficit.

Among other things, this has been caused by the downfall of Nokia and the paper industry as well as the collapse of trade and tourism with Russia.

$600 in 1849 is equivalent to ~$27,000 today. But since that doesn't tell us much...

In the same year, cows sold for $10 and horses for 80$ [1]. I'm not sure what to think of it. Sounds like a lot, but also way too little.

Christ. What a quote. And how depressing it all is. The poor family...

> Eels are pretty hardy, says Alistair; they can even travel over land if they need to. To see them gasping and dying on the banks was heartbreaking. “It was apocalyptic.”

> The results found unusually high levels of heavy metals, ammonia levels that were “well outside acceptable limits for any freshwater life” and nitrogen levels that were “toxic to all aquatic life”.

It's quite a long article that deals with many problems the UK has regarding environmental protection, illegal waste dumping and so on. The lack of care and amount of damage is just shocking.

I really recommend a read.

I think it's weird, but not that far scetched... copying my comment:

They use it as an analogy with a supernova:

> And now this massive star is about to blow.

> (...) it runs out of the fuel that keeps the monster from collapsing in on itself under its own insanely powerful gravity.

> An imploding star crushes itself into a tiny ball, and the rebound instantly triggers a colossal explosion that lights up the entire galaxy. A bursting AI bubble threatens the entire American economy.

> The gravity inside the bubble is investor expectations.

> In a physics thought experiment, all it takes is tossing a pinch of iron into the furnace of a massive star teetering on the edge of explosion to trigger an instant implosion.

The last one isn't even wrong, since iron is the last element a star can fuse (iron core collapse)

Re:Oracle Triggered the Implosion of the AI Bubble on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @10:13AM (#49978810)
Well, if you keep reading, they use this for the analogy with a supernova:

I guess the last one isn't even wrong, since iron is the last element a star can fuse (iron core collapse)

Of course there's a reality you can observe. Lets look at these two factually true observations:

Person 1 sees someone who looks like and identifies as a man. They see a man.

Person 2 sees someone who has a vagina, can bear a child, and was born a woman. They see a woman.

My point was that you can arrive at different conclusions from observing reality by ignoring or arguing away the points that refute you.

You didn't even acknowledge my point of it being the same arguments used by transphobes.

Of course, it's easy to use, because your side is "obviously right". All you have to do is look at "reality".
