Re:Lovable AI Apps Expose User Data Online on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @05:25AM (#50350182)
So when do we get to see accountability for this? This is one of those companies I’m laughing at for their failures, but really sad for those people on the consumer side that got screwed by this (not the companies using it, but the actual end users).
Re:The Ford Privacy Promise: You're in Control of Your Data on Monday November 02, 2026 @08:32PM (#50346836)
There’s still telemetry from map apps. I just flat out kill location services on my phone these days.
Re:The Ford Privacy Promise: You're in Control of Your Data on Monday November 02, 2026 @08:30PM (#50346823)
So far less than $200 for the basic stuff like oil, filters. I’ve spent maybe about $600-$800 total in ~5 years because I got new tires. I bought new.
Re:The Ford Privacy Promise: You're in Control of Your Data on Monday November 02, 2026 @07:04PM (#50346108)
Easiest way to control your data is to pull the telemetry unit out of of your car and never take the car to the dealership. This isn't easy, but it's worth it.
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2026) on Monday November 02, 2026 @05:23PM (#50344801)
Man, I feel bad for the people I know that went to this company. They tried to recruit me back in 2020 and I dodged a bullet. Guy running it sounded like a scam artist.
Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Sunday November 01, 2026 @10:05PM (#50332666)
Finding and watching some Youtube repair to figure out where the parts are and learning to do it is cheaper than buying anything that isn't spying on you. It's just depressing this is what we have to put up with.
Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Sunday November 01, 2026 @03:47PM (#50329703)
Just open up whatever you buy and pull the networking components, microphones, and covert cameras. Leverage HDMI after that. Problem solved.
Re:Is $ 80K okay to live in US? on Friday October 30, 2026 @03:03PM (#50308664)
Give it a couple more years. 80k by yourself is doable but not for much longer. The city can’t manage their budget and the taxes are making all housing untennable. Doesn’t matter if you own or rent. A place that ran $1200/mo back in 2020 goes for $3500-4000/mo right now.
git diff is all I care about when the robot is done doing its thing. Whatever it says in chat is mostly irrelevant to me because they all write in a way that is not very helpful. I can’t really describe it but something about the structure they all use by default really drives me nuts and I’ve opted to not bother with it.
Just don’t run directly. Use containers and VMs. Anyone running this stuff directly on their PC at this point in time shouldn’t be surprised. These companies don’t care about security, just your wallet. And we’ve seen how wallet theory goes, people still keep buying.

Show HN: OpenArcanum – An End-to-End Encrypted Alternative to Discord

https://github.com/hyperkubeorg/openarcanum/

A while back I recall being told it can't be done and won't be "Discord". To that, I have to admit, it's not Discord. It isn't designed in a way to profile it's users and it respects privacy. There is still much work to do on this project, but it's in open beta with a web client so people can see how it works before committing to a desktop app download. Mobile apps will come later, if there is...

The US is massive with different income requirements depending on location. If you’re in San Francisco with $80k, you’re poor. If you’re in San Antonio, TX that is roughly middle class earnings and doable solo. With inflation though, it’s not tenable for much longer anywhere.
Just what I’m sure everyone wanted. More Google profiling for selling products and data and AI training. Some of us are not fans. I’m definitely not and have opted to clone discord in a way that makes this hard. It’s live already too, openarcanum.org
Re:No One Needs Us Anymore [video] on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @12:34AM (#50254737)
Such a downer song. Nothing to fret about fellow human. There's plenty left for us to do. Keep your eyes open. Your head to the ground. We have a tool that can do what none of these companies can imagine coming. The future is decentralization. There's a lot to break apart.
So grandma just trying to do her taxes doesn’t matter anymore, huh?

And when you’re dumb enough to trust a giant corporation, and this happens to you, we shouldn’t care about you either, right?

Re:Zero-Click Spyware Delivered via Targeted Ads: AdFection on Thursday October 15, 2026 @06:30PM (#50111299)
You're wrong on legislating these things. If the ad network is forced into KYC for their ad distributions and they are excluded from safe harbor, like a TV network would be, then I guarantee those ads cease to exist.

This mentality of "it's to hard" doesn't get things done.

I do agree that some greedy lawyers and civil liability would solve this, but that's not a long term solution at all.

Idiocracy continues to be a prophecy for sure. Idk about Terminator though, that's not what I'm concerned about at all. The first time I get triaged to an LLM over a doctor, I know society is cooked.
I will continue to reiterate. DO NOT ALLOW UNALIGNED AI TO HAVE ANYTHING CLOSE TO INTERNET ACCESS. Seriously people, it's negligent.
You are failing to answer the question. What's your point? I pose a question, I present what can be said, which sure I did say it in that comment to point at the extremes, but the question remains unanswered. What do you want of me? and now we have what's your point?
If you make this work in a gig (could imagine using it as a DJ), you should post it.
I said it's kinda cool. Like what more do you want? I could point out how useless it is in general, I can't say it would make a good learning tool, because it doesn't. But it is a novelty site that does make sound and show correct chord positions. Can you use it to compose something? Sure but the sound cutoff between chords and the need to pick a chord that strums down first before you can strum up means you'll always produce a sound you don't want and you can't even replicate picking.

It's not a tool, it's a toy man. Chill out.

This is kinda cool, but it's nowhere near as fun as being able to play the real thing. Sounds better IRL.

It is nice that it shows the chords.

Re:GPT-6 Astra Helped Me Jailbreak My Kindle on Monday October 12, 2026 @10:06PM (#50065688)
The path of the hacking skill just changes locations. There will always be a solution to break into systems you physically own.

You can’t encrypt everything in a way where I can’t hack my devices. Sure difficulty and risk will increase once you start hacking in the hardware, but it’s the hardware itself that will be the final vector. This was just the destination we were always headed toward anyways.

Re:GPT-6 Astra Helped Me Jailbreak My Kindle on Monday October 12, 2026 @08:46PM (#50065115)
Nah, we just start opening the phones, cutting off some PBC patches, soldering some wires, and intercepting/synthesizing signals live. Keeping phones locked is just a zero sum game.
Re:America.gov – Whatever you need from government, start here on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @05:51PM (#49914951)
And they changed the AI chat behavior again. We may know who our presidents are apparently again. Site seems pretty limited in what it can search up.
Re:America.gov – Whatever you need from government, start here on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @05:38PM (#49914833)
That's lovely, I have screenshots of different behavior this morning. They undid it. This is hilarious. I retried right now and it's saying Biden won the 2020 election again.
Re:America.gov – Whatever you need from government, start here on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @01:25PM (#49911835)
The harness was censored overnight as well. Can't ask it who won the 2020 election or who was the president in 2020 or 2000. It will say who is president right now though. Crazy shit really.
Re:America.gov – Whatever you need from government, start here on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @01:24PM (#49911819)
I agree with AI being useful for exactly the type of usecase you're thinking. Though I do want to point out a major flaw with trust in this specific harness. It got censored overnight.

Last night you could literally query and get factual information about election results; but today it wont even tell you who the president was in 2000.

There's a major censorship issue here.

Re:America.gov – Whatever you need from government, start here on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @01:13PM (#49911706)
Last night you can ask "Who won the 2020 election?" and it was like "I got you! It's Joe Biden".

Today it responds with "America does not provide campaign or party information."

The people on Reddit were right.

Those are API things. Should be an API, build an MCP server for it. Doesn't touch the PC. About the automated responses, that's a write operation, therefore requires user consent.

If you want to design a system specifically to make sure you're not going to get stonewalled for sending me an emdash, you build and maintain a set of permissive rules for sending/reading to avoid my blacklist of people I'll never work with.

Once you got API stuff sorted, just throw a cronjob at it or build a service for that stuff.

^ There be prompts all over the place here, obviously. Realistically your MCP server will end up hacking on POP3.
