Re:Why Finnish babies sleep in cardboard boxes (2013) on Thursday September 05, 2019 @05:31AM (#20885164)
My wife read this exact article from 2013, purchased a 'Finnish Baby Box' from a private company that makes and exports them from Finland, and our baby slept in it for his first seven or eight months. It actually turns out the idea for the company itself was inspired by the same article too. Here's the follow-up from 2016 https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-35834370

There are free to access castle ruins and buildings of a similar age and much older all over the UK, they're hardly in short supply. Maybe you didn't intend it but this comes across as overly pessimistic. It's hardly as if every bit of history in the country has had a fence put round it to charge an entry fee.

Not trying to say what you're describing doesn't exist, but the only place I can think of that I've been to that charges to see some 3ft high bits of wall would be Old Sarum, but that also has great views.

Because in practice it usually makes little difference. Ground rents are often as little as £10 a year.
Re:Exploring the BBC Micro:bit Software Stack and OS on Wednesday November 29, 2017 @09:31AM (#15807007)
I turned 30 this year, born 1987, and I had no idea that I missed out on this kind of education by so few years.

I remember there were a couple of BBC Micros sat getting dusty in the corners of a couple of classrooms in both my infant (year 1-2) and junior (year 3-6) schools, but we never used them.

Instead we had brand new Windows machines on which we learnt Powerpoint, Excel and used Encarta. Joy.

Try that at 3am and see if the cab driver cares.
Re:Uber London loses licence to operate on Friday September 22, 2017 @06:43AM (#15310886)
Pre-uber I'd take the night bus, as I'm not paying £50 or £60 for a black cab from town to my home. Post uber that same journey is now less than £25 and well worth paying for to avoid the occasional horrors on the night bus.
Re:Ask HN: Any Android developers using ListView? on Friday May 09, 2014 @08:17AM (#7720426)
1) I've never had to use ExpandableListView. ListView I use all the time. 2) Most often, BaseAdapter 3) Both options. XML if I had to pick.
That picture is of Oxford Circus, one of the busiest intersections in the UK. There are very few crossings similar to that one here.

Re:Android Fragmentation Visualized on Tuesday July 30, 2013 @11:39AM (#6127644)
The problems are greatly exaggerated. I imagine there's little difference to the "fragmentation" problems developing for Windows.

I find Three has superb coverage throughout London. Elsewhere it's not so good.

Re:Android Orphans: Visualizing a Sad History of Support on Thursday October 27, 2011 @08:59AM (#3162806)
Are OS updates really that important for most consumers?

I have a Desire running Froyo. I don't think I've really missed out on a huge amount by not getting Gingerbread.

Re:Android Orphans: Visualizing a Sad History of Support on Thursday October 27, 2011 @08:54AM (#3162785)
If your OS version isn't supported, you can't see it in the market or download it.

That's taught in an IT lesson, not English!

Re:Another 'Android from the perspective of an iOS developer' Post on Wednesday September 14, 2011 @11:00AM (#2996496)
I have the same experience (no complaints or problems) using it at home on my Ubuntu machine, also with the OpenJDK. When I tried it recently on my Windows 7 machine at work the autosuggest will regularly lock everything up for about 10 seconds and everything's noticeably slower. Not sure if that's the Windows version or the computer - but Visual Studio 2010 runs just fine.

24 yo from London here. That language is completely standard to me. I've been saying awesome with a straight face for as long as I can remember. I'm not sure it's the best way to have made the point.
This is an excellent video that explains it very well - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNu8XDBSn10
Why, The Principality of Sealand, of course.
I prefer the former myself, but I would guess a lot of people would have more trust and faith in the latter.
