I'm so tired of this crap I'm not even engaging in the debate anymore.
Re:Two Providers of Secure E-Mail Shut Down on Friday August 09, 2013 @10:04AM (#6185688)
Lavabit was a much more "under the radar" provider. Silent circle has gained huge traction since they started and provide secure Phone, SMS and mail services. They may not be "equal" but silent circle is certainly more of a high profile target.
Re:Two Providers of Secure E-Mail Shut Down on Friday August 09, 2013 @10:01AM (#6185671)
I would probably argue that being imprisoned for an undetermined time is fairly comparable to "losing your life" for most people.
Re:Prism Break on Tuesday July 09, 2013 @10:02PM (#6017009)
Spideroak.com - online backup and sync with zero-knowledge client side encryption should be represented in cloud services in my opinion, though since we are not yet 100% open source I understand the arguments against it.

We are however very close to opening nimbus.io and crypton.io open-source secure and private storage APIs based on our storage infrastructure.

Re:Yahoo looking to acquire Tumblr? on Friday May 17, 2013 @12:17AM (#5722668)
I am thoroughly unimpressed by Marissa Mayer at this point. Yahoo is doing nothing but keeping up their 'trend' of buying too early or too late.

Tumblr while a great asset is going to be FAR to expensive to pay off for Yahoo at this point, and a lot of the junior assets they have purchased have no or little direction.

In my opinion Yahoo is on a quick slide towards 'AOL territory' where they have to slim down to their 'core' to make any money and will likely suffer innovation starvation until they are almost totally irrelevant.

Yup. Or at least something that could very easily be traced back to me.
Re:Mt. Gox Dwolla account frozen by DHS on Wednesday May 15, 2013 @12:02PM (#5712857)
Simply 100% not true. They freely admitted to committing crimes, and there is overwhelming evidence they routinely broke the law and helped clients do the same. The 'fine' was a joke.
For a minute I had a '24' flashback and started packing canned goods and ammunition into a 'bug out bag'..

The fire at the JFK Library has just been reported as mechanical and non-suspicious or 'affiliated' with the explosions.

It was an intentional and controlled detonation of a 'device'.

Re:Amazon Coins Launching on Thursday April 11, 2013 @05:26PM (#5534920)
A HUGE reason for Amazon is to build their own transaction network with control over fee structure, security and implementation.
Re:Mtgox stops trading for 12 hours on Thursday April 11, 2013 @12:03PM (#5532783)
No doubt this is the REAL test of Bitcoin. I can see if hitting $30 again to bottom out.
Re:Bitcoin falls from $266 on Wednesday April 10, 2013 @03:20PM (#5527429)
Yeah but you need to perform the sales with matching funds on both trading platforms. Selling here and transferring BTC/USD to another trading platform is not the method due to the swings and time for verification.
Re:Bitcoin down 60% to $100 on Wednesday April 10, 2013 @03:18PM (#5527407)
Yeah, NO ONE saw this coming :) Of course DDOS attacks, split market places and a gains of 100% per week for a few months are going to require hard falls.
Re:Bitcoin Is Fundamentally Flawed on Monday April 08, 2013 @11:17PM (#5516240)
While I agree to an extent, the current $2 billion market cap is far to small to compare with. When/if BTC reaches around $5,000 each ($50 billion or so market cap) I will agree.
Re:Bitcoin Is Fundamentally Flawed on Monday April 08, 2013 @05:00PM (#5514581)
Nope. Since no one can ever satisfactory answer the question of the 'real' amount of BTC in circulation, this will only serve as a factor of uncertainty. Lost bitcoins affect nothing, FOUND bitcoins can affect everything.
Re:Bitcoin Is Fundamentally Flawed on Monday April 08, 2013 @04:59PM (#5514569)
Nope. That's the problem. LOST bitcoin (as you cannot quantify the availability of anonymous data blocks) wouldn't effect anything. ONLY FOUND bitcoins would.
Re:Bitcoin Is Fundamentally Flawed on Monday April 08, 2013 @04:58PM (#5514560)
I think the 'point' here is that as opposed to chests with 100.000.000KG of gold there are actually 'lost' wallet files with enough BTC that it would 'rock' an economy with a currency cap in the future.

I am pretty sure if someone found a stash of gold worth $400.000.000.000 that WOULD actually effect gold prices. Also: Gold has 'real life' uses (production of components etc) and real world costs etc. attached to handling (weight, transport costs etc). None of which BTC has.

Re:Bitcoin Is Fundamentally Flawed on Monday April 08, 2013 @02:12PM (#5513444)
I agree that it's not a 'currency killer' in the short run BUT if we speculate that BTC reaches mainstream popularity and a total market value in the 100-1000s of BILLION USD the fact that an 'unknown' amount is in circulation makes for a very strange variable.

All of a sudden my old 1BTC wallet on my crashed laptop hard drive may be worth 100s of days of mining network wide, and even the speculation that a 'previously unknown' wallet containing 100BTC (there are a LOT of those sitting on old phones and hard drives already I promise) would have possibly disastrous effect on currency value etc.

All I am saying is that there are a LOT of factors to consider and BTC loss over time is a major one.

My argument being: A finite supply of a currency is one of the factors people REALLY need to think about when it comes to BTC. And I guess I am saying that it's a real problem vs. a currency with increasing difficulty and a non-finite supply.

Re:Bitcoin Is Fundamentally Flawed on Monday April 08, 2013 @01:36PM (#5513151)
I agree that this argument is purely stupid. How does the 'feeling richer' psychological factor somehow play into the success or downfall of a currency as a 'flaw' in the mechanics of it?

Some people feel 'richer' with 1 OZ of gold then $1700 in bills, some feel 'richer' with 100x $1 then a check for $100. But why does that matter as a success factor of a currency?

I don't get it.

Re:Bitcoin Is Fundamentally Flawed on Monday April 08, 2013 @01:33PM (#5513133)
While I don't disagree with the author I would say that the finite supply shines a light on an even more direct problem.

What happens to 'lost' coins? The BTC supply is not only finite but in fact dwindling over time, as inevitably the amount of currency is going to diminish due to digital loss.

I have personally lost a few BTC due to computer crashes, wallet file lost etc. (In the early days) and considering this the total supply of bitcoins will be diminishing over time at (maybe already?) higher rate then they can be mined.

I haven't taken the time to do ANY form of math on this but I can guarantee that already 10.000s if not 100.000s BTC are lost forever due to people simply not having access to them anymore and the data being destroyed.

Over years of loss this is probably more likely to kill the currency than anything else in my opinion.

Re:Why bitcoin’s rise is nothing to celebrate on Wednesday April 03, 2013 @10:56AM (#5486417)
I would have to argue that I trust an anonymous computer network and my own ability to keep a wallet file safe over any bank in the world.

At least a blockchain isn't actively out to scam me out of money.

Re:Bitcoin exchange rate reached $100 USD per BTC on Monday April 01, 2013 @05:21PM (#5475997)
I think a lot of people here would benefit from reading some William Gibson novels.

I don't think the BTC will ever be a 'currency' as the USD or the GBP. It is also not necessary for the BTC to be at a 'fixed value' at any time. As a virtual currency it's ok for the BTC to fluctuate heavily as the only thing needed for it to still succeed is that payment systems are 'always on' and can determine a spot price for goods and services.

I would rather see the BTC tied to 'Pizza index' than USD. This would make it easy for people to use an in-app value determinator when making purchases.

Say you just tap your phone with a BTC wallet against a cash register. The register answers, well your burger will be 0.00065 BTC at spot price as of 12.24.44.32 PM. Accept/decline.

That's it. I see the BTC/LTC (Litecoin) as alternative currencies but still worthy of a HUGE market share for micro/everyday transactions.

Not to mention that it seems like in this case the person in question may be whining about untaxed funds that he skimmed of his company. Oh no, I am being robbed of money that wasn't mine!!
