Data will mingle
Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (April 2025) on Monday April 28, 2025 @12:56PM (#43823520)
I find tracking movies and series I have watched with my partner an impossible task. Spreadsheets are too fiddly for my partner, and I want to look up what is next on my phone so I have turned to Airtable and n8n for automation.

input a relevant url, it will decide if it IMDB or Youtube or a list. using an llm, it will attempt to extract the movies or series from the list and find the relevant IMDB link.

Then I have a masonry view of movies & series I have and have not watched, sortable by tags that I can rate and add notes to.

We are the beta testers, and it is exhausting.

Siri, for example, introduced in I think 2011, still doesn't work nearly as well as they exclaim.

Re:Ghost jobs are wreaking havoc on tech workers on Thursday October 31, 2024 @03:24PM (#42010506)
I was told earlier this week by an organization

> We leave this role posted because it's so critical to our operation and onboard as demand requires, however at this time we don't have enough demand to justify another full time hire.

Why do they need my home address for an application? I never understand that. Several have asked me for my DL number

The problem with digital records is that they mingle.
This is what happens when growth is more important than sustainability.
Meanwhile, hundreds of honest people have their Facebook accounts banned regularly. And banned for what seems like no reason, without a solution to renew.

My dream is to have Obsidian inside of a database.
Re:Notion Calendar on Wednesday January 17, 2024 @02:28PM (#39032241)
if you start a Notion variation, let me know. I would love something like notion but offline and secure.
Re:Those jobs you're applying to? They might not be real on Thursday January 04, 2024 @12:20PM (#38869647)
I've searched for months (project manager LFG)

Job seekers are facing a broken, emergent system.

The combination of fake listings, ghosting, and generic emails that provide no feedback seems almost designed to hold them back. There are a few tricks to learn, but without insider knowledge, they may remain undiscovered.

I spend over 20 hours a week searching, tailoring my resume, and submitting applications, only to receive minimal responses. This is demoralizing, not to mention the stress from diminished income.

sure, maybe.

I imagine something more like a video game. Simulating the systems but keeping it engaging.

I would love to see a Voyager 1 simulator.

Yes
If you do not know what you are looking for you should not look. If you know what you are looking for get a warrant.
If the police are acting as a citizen to gather information, they should have a warrant. It cannot and should not be arbitrary.
Police should not be able to lie without a warrant.

> The service has gone completely down hill for me the last few months. The app is the buggiest it has ever been. I've been overcharged more time than I can count, and customer service is practically impossible to actually get in touch with.

Welcome to the future!

Its simple, get a warrant.
Generally speaking I believe the officers want to do the right thing, but the system is an intertangled web of perverse incentives.

I'm willing trust an officer as a person, but not as a part of the system.

Yes. Some experiences need friction. For example I do not automate any bills. Each of them are paid manually (with a few exceptions like subscription services)

I want to see, feel, know and understand what is happening behind the curtain when it comes to my hard earned assets.

I like Elon, I think he is smart. I also think he has too much power and influence. And along with that comes corruption, non sense and slew of other negative attributes.

When did we stop being critical of technology and innovation?

Just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should...

It's like we have opened Pandora's box allowing technology (with poor security) into our homes.

Devices controlled and maintained by companies with questionable ethics who only care about the stock holder.

I agree with you 100%

My only hope is they open to tools to the community the same way Neverwinter Nights did.

I use chatGPT less over the last 2 months.

Our industry is so tightly regulated that getting useful content out of chatGPT is a challenge. but what was once a human only job, we can mix in bard and chat gpt toget better results than 12 months ago.

who watches the watchmen?
