Re:Why you don't steal from a hacker. on Friday August 12, 2011 @01:40PM (#2878282)
You're missing the point. To paraphrase: "As a hacker, I had the good sense to make sure I had tracking software installed. I take security seriously."
Re:I'm Quitting Breathing on Monday August 08, 2011 @03:40PM (#2861297)
Satire at its finest.
PHP is also a fairly easy leap from HTML/CSS.

With JS or PHP, learn what they're actually for, and then come up with something useful you can create with it. Doing is learning. Reading alone is useless.

Re:“Real Names” Policies Are an Abuse of Power on Thursday August 04, 2011 @04:25PM (#2847597)
Abuse of power? What power? You don't have to use Google+ or Facebook. They're convenient, sure, but you'll do just fine without them.

They only have as much power over you as you think they do.

Re:Would You Like Some Wood Pulp In Your Shredded Cheese? on Wednesday August 03, 2011 @12:26PM (#2841762)
Sensationalist title here. It's not wood pulp. It's cellulose derived from wood pulp.

(I do hate the texture it gives shredded cheese though.)

Re:Notch on Euclideon: It's a scam on Tuesday August 02, 2011 @06:18PM (#2838936)
I regularly pay my ISP large amounts of money to treat me with contempt. Somebody I'm not paying can treat me however they like. They have /zero obligation/ to be nice to me after I purchase an "as is" product.
iTunes.
Re:Notch on Euclideon: It's a scam on Tuesday August 02, 2011 @05:46PM (#2838836)
If I was paying a subscription fee to play, I would agree with you. But I spent $15 a year and a half ago for the product /as it was/ and it was absolutely worth it. You are not entitled to updates, they're just nice to have.

And I'm not paying for server support or anything, so I don't necessarily expect rapid bug/exploit fixes.

To be fair, a large number of employers of interns are looking for some sort of significant experience (though limited to job experience).
90% of my programming experience came from this: clubs and hobbies.

I'm sure your school has some sort of club you can join. For me, it was our IEEE student branch, where we competed in a robotics competition every year.

No club exists? START ONE! It's fun! Being a founder is fantastic for your resume, and you'll get a lot more experience than just programming.

In the next year or so, do anything you have to to get an internship.

Find a fun project to do on your own. Personally I prefer things I can touch, as opposed to PC applications. If you haven't before, check out the Arduino platform. I can give you lots of ideas of fun (and useful!) things you can do with it.

I flag repeats based on who submitted first. First come, first serve. Every next one I see I flag.
Re:Raspberry Pi $25 PC goes into alpha production on Thursday July 28, 2011 @03:26PM (#2818501)
I will buy three of these as soon as they go on sale.

I foresee this having a huge impact on hobbyists and robotics

Re:ISP Bandwidth Caps are Really Rate Hikes on Thursday July 28, 2011 @02:41PM (#2818287)
the 2-5 GB caps are for wireless networks, aka 3G. How often do you download HD movies onto your phone? In the very next sentence it mentions 250 GB for desktop connections.
Judges don't grant patents. The US Patent Office does that. Patents this broad are not at all unusual.
Re:Is Domestically Produced Ethanol Worth the Cost? on Thursday July 28, 2011 @12:51PM (#2817682)
A very promising technology I've had the chance to work with is called SwiftFuel. It's based of switchgrass, which is far more sustainable.

The FAA, due to pressure from the EPA, is looking to switch the entire aviation industry to SwiftFuel from low-lead fuels.

More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avgas#Swift_fuel

SwiftFuel has the advantage of being able to run, in theory, in most/all aircraft engines without modification. (Fuel pumps need to be replaced, however)

Re:I SOLICIT Your HELP on Wednesday July 27, 2011 @03:21PM (#2813678)
africaafrica.net africaisacontinent.com ilikeafrica.com

More seriously: What is your website for? What do you want to accomplish? Who do you want going to your website?

You can use this to test your ideas, and see if they're available: http://domai.nr/

IMO, the absurd part is, how do you bring a 93 year old dead person back to life? How long until we get this technology? Who's to say that there will be a consistent flow of money to keep this person frozen until that time? (it's not cheap)

I think that eventually we'll probably figure this stuff out, but that now is far too early to start freezing people.

As absurd as cryonics sounds, without fanatics (as some might call them) pushing for it, it will never exist.

"If you don't ask, then the answer is always no."

Hopefully we'll see you again some day, Ettinger.

Re:Mozilla is building an operating system on Tuesday July 26, 2011 @01:43PM (#2808513)
1 GB is pretty meager for general use these days.
Re:The real meaning of "hack" on Tuesday July 26, 2011 @01:31PM (#2808474)
My definition of hack is something like "Use/modification of a thing to achieve a solution that was not intended by the creator." As such you can hack software, Kinects, Roombas, and IKEA furniture.
This isn't a revelation for most people (or maybe I'm biased, a lot of my friends are pilots), but the second video there is the best demonstration I've seen so far of why this occurs.
Re:Mozilla is building an operating system on Tuesday July 26, 2011 @10:30AM (#2807462)
Running FF5 on Win7, 2 GB of RAM. I leave it open all day with no issues. 5+ tabs at all times.
Re:Webdesigners: please make text readable on Tuesday July 26, 2011 @10:21AM (#2807412)
With good reason. If I read white on black for more than 5 minutes, whenever I look away there are negative lines floating across my vision.
Re:Poll: Do you use Google Reader on a daily basis? on Monday July 25, 2011 @05:34PM (#2804765)
I use Reader on a nearly hourly basis. I suppose I should stop that...
Re:Chromebooks on sale at Amazon for $349 on Monday July 25, 2011 @03:08PM (#2804096)
What I meant was "We know there's tons of things we can still optimize, but we're just gonna release now anyways."
