I have to disagree, costco often has custom worse versions of better products, we recently had a costco air conditioner fail just to find out it wasn't built quite as robustly as the $50 more expensive midea sold elsewhere with an almost identical model number. Similarly had my costco GE washing machine fail last year right out of warranty. There's a real quality problem going on with costco right now.

Re:Neural audio codecs: how to get audio into LLMs on Tuesday October 21, 2025 @04:00PM (#45660932)
I wouldn't mind so much if they cheat on the way back but listen in earnest. There are use cases like teaching language where having the AI understand the sounds carefully matters a ton.
A potential sales tip: Going down the list of the $10 plan the first thing I saw was the 300 scripts limit and thought "no way". Pay attention to how supabase does it, basically no limits except compute and storage.

Re:I Built an Event-Sourcing Database Engine: Meet Genesis DB on Thursday September 18, 2025 @03:55PM (#45294203)
Seems like very cool tech.

I think the adoption hurdle will be hard unless you have a free plan that can be used for small things indefinitely. Having a hard cap on events would make me pass on this for fun side projects, which is where I would pivot later from to work projects. Just throwing that out there. This is why my last work project was supabase, I was using their free tier for some fun personal stuff.

If you have another vector for adoption that's fine too.

Great book, I highly recommend it too.
Re:"AI first" and the Bus Factor of 0 on Wednesday August 20, 2025 @09:03PM (#44968073)
The flaw in this reasoning is AI can also help you understand code much more quickly than we could before. We are now in fractional bus factor territory.
Crisis management is a big part of the job, and the more people you have the higher the chance there is a crisis at any given point in time. Around 100 devs there's usually at least 1-2 things going on at any given time.

I feel like the whole distributing webasm binaries thing is tough to swallow. I get the argument, but surely there's a better way, like maybe you could make a tiny interpreter in webasm and distribute that with a human readable script.

Re:Monolith First (2015) on Monday September 16, 2024 @02:12PM (#41558839)
Recently was looking at a distributed microservice system at a company that thought they would need massive scale, but pivoted from d2c to enterprise b2b and then found out enterprise b2b companies want data separation. They would have been much better off going monolith first and probably actually sticking with a monolith.
My pet feature is good and tight Jira (or ticket manager) integration so it opens tickets for the team to put time on, maybe even syncs time? Really nicely streamline so the time to remediate is tracked as part of the team's work.
We used WorldCheck data at my last startup, it was the best in the business at the time. High quality groomed data, well tagged, with an actual timeline for each entity that explains why they're in there. Absolute top notch.

It seems to me if they modeled it as an infinite series of games instead of a single game they might find it's about denying your opponents resources for the next round. You also should consider things proportionally in terms of the resources of each group, one may be willing to take a bigger total loss that is smaller proportionally to disarm another group.

(I admit I only read through the abstract though)

Re:The good delusion: has effective altruism broken bad? on Wednesday November 16, 2022 @09:59AM (#33624110)
Yeah I think if you want to be an actual smartypants you need some kind of exponential discounting. There's a lot of monsters that could eat us along the way, so people that exist right now or are about to exist are WAY more important.

If you wanted to go all in maybe try to consider the number of lives weighted by the probability they exist will. Some kind of drake equation like thing.

Similar here. Had a baby 9 months ago, the doctor took the insurance, but it turned out later the hospital didn't. Bill was over 100K and it wasn't covered at all.
