Can I come along for the ride just to observe and learn?

I know nothing and have no skills.

No, I wish someone would help me learn how to do all this stuff. I'm not sure where I could begin with even doing a "web startup"

I'd need a lot of programming knowledge and I was not blessed with a computer when I grew up like a lot of you.

Ask HN: How can I learn enough coding to run simple online sites?

I'm really interested in learning to code little sites, apps, creating small simple stuff that may generate small amounts of money.I have a lot of time on my hands, I always see really great and simple sites that generate small amounts of income. I'd be more than happy with this but I have no idea on where to start with the coding.<p>How much experience do I need? How do I learn? Where do...

I'd also like to learn this.
Interesting.
Very informative post,

I try to see if its feasible to do.

I'd do it, how much is the pay?

Quick question,

The link says,

>We think the best way for you to learn about software engineering is to actually do it

Does this mean that I can apply for an internship without any coding experience?

Because I'd love this.

>- Are you servicing a specific region Southern California.

>- Who are your primary customers going to be? You say mechanics, but are they the only customers possible?

Mechanics, other people who will buy from me to distribute.

>- Does it have to be something with "Auto Supplies" in it? Think of successful sites whose names don't have anything in common with the actual purpose of the site (Google, Yahoo, Zillow...)

Not at all, any recommendations are helpful and highly appreciated. That's just what I was thinking..

>Maybe use your own name to cater to the customer segment that goes for the ol' folksy crap

I don't have a cool name that people with associate with. :(

Ask HN: Help me chose a name for my business

I've asked this already..but I usually make these in the middle of the night due to the timezones so it gets buried.I'm starting a small business/ The business is mainly an automotive parts distributor to mechanics, not regular retail people. I'm selling fluids, oil, and things like that.Think less actual physical automotive "hardware" and more of stuff like oil filters and sparkplugs and brake...

I actually like some of these. However, these seem to be directed at a retail crowd.

I am distributing to mechanics. I'm not sure if they'll enjoy Autocrat automotive supplies, despite the fact that I love that one. It's actually very smart.

Re:Ask HN: What are some middle man businesses in the market? on Tuesday September 14, 2010 @02:22AM (#1689698)
First, I'd like to say I highly appreciate your post, it was rather informative. This is what I love about HN!

1.I've always read, and have been interested in investing in the markets,(I read financial news daily) however, I know no one in my environment that would have knowledge of these topics or anyone that would provide me any insight. I know investing in some stocks won't make me much, I'm not delusional and I know how much prices generally fluctuate. I've tried finding classes in my college but there aren't I know. I also don't know anyone who deals with anything related to computers, software, websites, or anything technology related. I wish someone would let me in and show me what they do so I have an idea of how businesses operate on the internet.

2. Makes sense, deal in something you are interested in. but I am not planning to sell to retailers but people who will directly use my product(other businesses). The product that I have in mind is non-perishable, and in demand daily, the type of competition is closest to a monopolistic competition, probably somewhere in between perfect competition and monopolistic, so entry and exist is not very difficult. Profit should probably be low though, until I have "relationships" with the people I'm selling to. The most important thing to them is price however.

I can talk more in detail if you provide an email. :)

4. Hmm, you're right. I am unable to do any such thing.

5. No I'm not doing any shipping. If I knew how to operate a site I would. It would open up a lot of possibilities.

6. Not considerable in any sense for any of you.

Re:Ask HN: What are some middle man businesses in the market? on Tuesday September 14, 2010 @12:33AM (#1689464)
I distribute it to them, they don't have time to go and buy from the whole salers because, A. Not enough space. B. they can't buy wholesale

But what are some internet ideas that I can use? I know hacker news is more focused on internet/programming related businesses.

Re:Ask HN: How can I learn how to invest in the market? on Tuesday September 14, 2010 @12:32AM (#1689463)
I'm looking for more applied advice. Your advice seems to have more of that, does Buffets' letters include such things?

Thanks for the entrance/exist point strategy. I am planning to invest for the short term so that should be useful

Re:Ask HN: How can I learn how to invest in the market? on Tuesday September 14, 2010 @12:31AM (#1689454)
But these are autobiographies, I would like a book that gives me APPLIED knowledge on trading in index funds, options, stocks, bonds, forex..etc. I'll start with stocks/index funds because they're easier.

I want to invest short term(less than a year)

Re:Ask HN: How can I learn how to invest in the market? on Tuesday September 14, 2010 @12:29AM (#1689451)
I hope this is not "above me" I don't know as much as the average hacker would probably know about markets. I'm 20 and don't have THAT much knowledge.

>>give up, and invest in index funds. Alright, Any book recommendations for that?

Ask HN: How can I learn how to invest in the market?

Hello, I'd like to learn how to invest in stocks, bonds, options, etc. However I find that there are no classes, and no realistic( please no make 100K in 5 days!!) books that would teach me what skills I need to learn.I'd just like to learn what to look for in market trends, how to accurately research stocks, and how to make money etc. I know some basic terminology and researching but I'd like...

I'm new here so I don't know how to send a PM, but what do you do for your current job? I'm your age so I'd like to do something that gives me valuable skills.
Re:I'm a young adult. What can I do to start a business? on Saturday August 28, 2010 @02:24AM (#1641335)
First I'd like to thank everyone for their comments. I forgot to mention the most important part.

I'd like to start a middle man business nothing in the service industry like most types of businesses, basically buying something in bulk and distributing to places. I know what I'd chose but I'm sure there are other types of things that I can distribute..I don't know what though. Also need more resources and connections, and I have no access to that. What are some things that I can buy and sell in bulk?

>Well, you're here so that means you are able to contact a lot of people that do have connections, and that's probably almost as good.

This is exactly what I'm here, I know this place is a host to some highly intelligent and successful people. In fact, I'd be glad to help someone for free just to see what they do and how things work. However, I believe most people run software/website type of business, which is something I'm highly interested in. I have no one that is even remotely close to "tech savvy" to own something like this

>What interests you? Are there skills associated with that that you might want to learn? I have skills I think, but I don't know what they're pertinent to because I don't know the opportunities are.

>So go to work for someone that owns a business! I guess I'll just go to those office complexes and ask? Would that be a good idea? Or if anyone here would like to show me what they do I'd be glad to help for free.

I'm a young adult. What can I do to start a business?

I'm not here for you to particularly hand hold me. The problem is I'm young and I have no connections. There are opportunities but I don't know that they exist, I don't know that I don't know. I don't even know any entrepreneurs, but I wish I did. I have a fair amount of capital to start with..but I have no skills or ideas that I can think of to make money.I'd just like to get my foot in a...
