Token cost really matters here. I want too know what API pricing is. As we see, this model is like 85% as good as the frontier models? What if its priced at $0.2 in / $0.5 out Mtok? All of a sudden, this model is A LOT more appealing to me.
I use Windsurf so I remain in the driver's seat. Using AI coding tools too much feels like brain rot where I can't think sharply anymore. Having auto complete guess my next edit as I'm typing is great because I still retain all the control over the code base. There's never any blocks of code that I can't be bothered to look at, because I wrote everything still.
Re:Do You Even Need Antivirus Software in 2024? on Saturday April 20, 2024 @04:53PM (#40100915)
Antivirus is useful for those who are tech illiterate, like those who will click on any link and install whatever it is that comes out of it.

Antivirus is likely not useful for the vast majority of users that regularly browse HN.

+1 for Quicken Simplifi. YNAB is more of a methodology, and you pay for the UI. Simplifi is more of tool that lets you look at your money as you see fit.
In the same way that giving a graphing calculator to students wont make them ace math classes, giving a student an English calculator (GPT4) wont make them ace anything with writing. Laziness will always yield poor results.

So privately held companies? """Shareholders"""" are the worst...
Re:Things are about to get a lot worse for Generative AI on Saturday December 30, 2023 @11:19PM (#38821763)
Such a thing happened with DALLE, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion.

Stable Diffusion, when used to its fullest with thing like Control Net and LoRAs, blows the pants off of other proprietary models.

I wonder if this works for Stable Diffusion as well...
Is a "lot" literally a unit of 6 computers (or however many)? Is this saying I can buy six computers for $170?

Ask HN: Is there a low cost way to learn real K8s, after exhausting minikube?

Ive messed around with Minikube, but now I want to implement the real deal. I want to implement a docker registry, blue green deployents, monitoring, request tracing, log aggregation, etc, but all for my own learning. When I looked at pricing out Azure/AWS, it was like $200 a month for a 4 node cluster. So HN, if you had to learn K8s on your own, what would you do after minikube? Also, am I just...

Re:Do you avoid the news? You’re in growing company on Tuesday August 08, 2023 @12:58PM (#37052093)
Cable TV and Internet are tools. They are technologies. They are not people.

News companies, specifically news company executives looking to sell as much ad revenue as possible, and are willing to produce any content that gets viewership, are to blame.

Ask HN: What resources do you use to understand financial markets?

I basically want to be able to watch CNBC and understand everything they are saying and be able to formulate my own educated opinion.I want to be able to cut through all the sensationalized noises about how the market is going to or not going to crash. For example, its Aug 8th 2023, and US trade with China is in decline. How do people know this? How can I fact check this myself? How can I...

Yes but did you write it or did GPT4 write it?

Ever been to Disney world?

When you first walk through the gate it's like 8am and it's incredible. There's so much to do and see. So much potential. You don't know where to start.

So you get a map and you look at all the rides and attractions and you start doing them by what interests you.

As the day goes on, you're having a great time but you kinda have to take a break at 3-4pm because your feet kinda hurt and youre hungry.

But you still have the other half of the park to get to so you get back to it.

Eventually, night time rolls around and you did everything you wanted to do. You rode all the rides that looked fun, and you saw all the attractions that looked fun.

Now, you have been wandering around main street looking at all the shops, wondering what you're going to buy as you wait for the fireworks display, and you realize, you're exhausted. You have been on your feet since early this morning. You have walked literally 20 miles today. You have had a great time though.

The firework show starts and it's just fantastic. It spends the rest of the mental energy you have and then it's time to head back to the hotel and go to sleep.

Now instead, imagine that someone locks the front gate and you can never leave. You can never go home. You can never sleep again. You must stay in the park forever. Imagine how exhausting that sounds...

Obviously I am equating this to the life events of being born, being a kid, living life as a young adult through mature adult, through your senior years until it's time for you to pass on. And being trapped in the park is like living forever...

Realize that by the time it's all over, you should be able to look back and say "I rode all the rides I wanted and I eat all the waffle cake I could", rather than "Boy I really wish I didn't complain that my feet were sore for an hour and I never got to ride that one ride".

>legitimacy of the profession

High pressure sales and a willingness to betray common politeness does not lend it self to "legitimacy". Its scummy.

Guys, multiple things can be true at the same time.

1. Webapps are largely overloaded and dont need to be as huge/complicated as they are.

2. Webapps are an objective computing miracle that brings full app functionality to tech illiterate people that is platform agnostic, everywhere on the planet, and thus most of their complexity is justified.

3. Performance for performance sake is never a hill to die on as it always leads to increasing complexity.

4. Performance when performance matters, is invaluable, and you should be prepared to make dramatic concessions for it.

5. Chasing metrics where the value is not something you easily understand, is usually never worth it.

6. Chasing metrics whose value is obvious (for example, PageSpeed) is worth it.

When websites should be static, they should be static. When webapps should be webapps, they should be webapps.

Software is a tool. A means to an end. Getting hung up on things like this isnt worth it. Just focus on delivering value to your users, and making it a good experience. Sometimes thats best achieved through a static website, sometimes its through a webapp.
