Don't show this to Christopher McDougall https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Born_to_Run_(McDougall_book)

Mainstream physical media is already dead.
Re:Eating Stinging Nettles on Thursday November 06, 2025 @07:32AM (#45834510)
>People think that when you become vegan you have to give up lots of food. It’s true that I stopped eating animals but the number of different species I eat has grown considerably. This is because meat-eaters tend to eat the same few species of animals over and over again – pigs, cows, chickens. Whereas there are some 20,000 species of edible plants in the world.

I was vegetarian for 10 years until around COVID. I often want to go back to vegetarianism, not for ethical or health reasons, just for the sheer diversity of what I ate and the fun of cooking with limitations.

Nobody dares commenting eh ?

>Most people who dislike a whole music genre generally don't really understand it and haven't put any effort into it.

I still can't get my family to get into noise and pigfuck, any advice ?

That's the most Hobbit-looking man I ever seen.

Every time I end up on this website I'm reminded how small my country, Belgium, truly is.
Re:Why can't we remember our lives as babies or toddlers? on Tuesday February 18, 2025 @09:26AM (#43089820)
It's crazy that people here have memories from when they were toddlers while I'm 29 and have a hard time remembering stuff from my early teens.
Re:E Ink's color ePaper tech gets supersized for outdoor displays on Wednesday February 12, 2025 @03:37AM (#43023187)
Sounds like a real headache. Maybe we should get rid of this whole advertising thing.

Thanks for the new word !

Re:Ataraxia on Wednesday October 23, 2024 @07:10AM (#41923796)
Funny to learn this word today. Stuff have been pretty rough for me these past few month and I have been unknowingly practicing ataraxia. Problems (at least mine) are temporary, instead of lamenting I should stay cool and enjoy what I have, preparing for the better days. It's truly liberating.
Re:A review on protein languauge models on Tuesday May 14, 2024 @04:05AM (#40352728)
The intersection between biology and computer science is by far my favorite topic. I wish I would have gone into bioinformatics after my CS masters degree. Both sciences really get the best out of the other.
Not to be cynical but this is an invitation to rampant criminality in city centers.

Fantastic work, I recently switched to a different OS and want to challenge myself. I'll be sure to buy the book once it's available.
Re:How smart do you have to be to get a degree? on Wednesday February 21, 2024 @05:33AM (#39452182)
It's obviously anecdotical but I know both many smart persons without higher level education and many 'not-so-bright' persons with university degrees. However, all those with degrees have parents with degrees and those without come from lower class, for the lack of better term, families.

If your parents have never set foot in an university and worked manual labor all their live, you are less likely to even consider higher education. While doctors may want their children to pursue a good career, even if those children hold no interest in that education.

Ask HN: Instead of finding a Reddit alternative, why not just go to the source?

I don't think there is any need to explain what's happening with reddit. Since then I finally managed to leave that every increasingly meaningless timesink. I have replaced the different subreddits I used to consult with blog and news-sites, either directly or via RSS. Which websites do you use eveyday to get general news about your interests ? For me I narrowed it down to: - Hacker News -...

I am interested to learn more about the subject, even in more technical details. Do you have any source suggestions ?
Re:Child suicides in Japan hit record high on Thursday October 14, 2021 @08:23AM (#28863313)
Watching anime (yeah yeah I know) I used to laugh at the absurdity of the bullying and how sexual it all was. I had no idea that bullying is really that bad in Japan. That's extremely sad.
Such pettiness in this article. If anything all the problems listed are caused by a car-centric urban planning and not the bikes themselves. Most big european cities are slowly restricting car access to their center and that kind of change takes time.
Re:Ask HN: Why DON'T you invest in cryptocurrencies? on Saturday October 02, 2021 @05:16PM (#28732157)
Crypto is not real but my need for money is.
I understand where the author is coming from. However, I don't think that stopping "growth" is possible. Our society cannot stagnate, either we continue to grow, most likely in unpredictable ways, or society die out. "Green" alternatives are popping up everywhere and a lot of them are far from perfect but we can only try to do better. This article just comes off as unnecessary and dishonnest rambling. No alternative to our current model is offered here.
Re:Reddit's Workaround for Vaccine Misinformation on Thursday September 23, 2021 @12:44PM (#28631648)
I have been a daily reddit user for the last 10 years. The website has been going downhill with noticeable pushes to make it more "frequentable" and ad-friendly in 2016 and 2020. I am no antivaxxer but the actual negativity and hivemind are too much and made finally quit.

I understand the need of moderation but the guenuine hate and lynching is horrifying. Even more so when you know how young most users are.

Re:How Marvel took over cinema and TV on Sunday September 19, 2021 @02:31AM (#28582165)
I respectfully disagree. The Marvel films still follow the same formula as they always did. Not that it is wrong, to each its own. But it's obvious that the films are not driven by vision but by maximising mass audience appeal. That's why they are all the same. They need to have x amount of jokes, x minutes of action, the dialogue needs to be simple, etc
