News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

'twas a sad day when N-gate went quiet.
Re:TCP Use-After-Free: CVE-2026-98432 / CVSS 9.8 on Saturday October 31, 2026 @09:50PM (#50322044)
I'm wondering if Android is vulnerable, since it is based on Linux?
Microsoft has patented that approach!
Both are true, it is a single point of failure and a single point of convenience.

What always puzzles me about this stuff and critical infrastructure like nuclear powerplants, is why is an internal network connected to the public Internet at all?

If you have to connect it to the Internet, then why is it talking to unknown devices?

someone else ;-)
Re:Tiny Tracking Tags for Big Monarch Journeys on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @09:09PM (#50268126)
Thank you - the tracker they use weighs in at 60 milligrams, incredibly light.
Pretty much everything that talks http has this Brotli library linked in. A quick file search on a Windows dev box showed:

- git

- Sublime text

- VS studio

- CUDA

- .NET

- inkscape

- AzureTools

A semi related: a patch for those with multiple cards. You can unlock around 20% increased card to card speed on consumer GPUs using this library:

https://github.com/aikitoria/open-gpu-kernel-modules

The hardware supports it, but then Nvidia disabled it if the driver detects cheaper cards. This bypasses the NVidia slowdown.

Re:mitmproxy adds --emudhra option on Thursday October 22, 2026 @12:43AM (#50191261)
It will be interesting to see if anyone reverse engineers IDA Pro!
It looks very bad that Telegram took almost 3 months to fix this vulnerability.

Reported 25 June

Fixed 16 September

I wonder why it took them so long?

Re:Data Center Darling's $30B IPO Dream Crushed in 48 Hours on Saturday October 10, 2026 @01:20AM (#50029808)
There's more to this story than non-existent data centers.

The executive team is rather rotten, too. One of them, Oliver Curtis, having recently spent time in jail for insider trading.

Re:Lobbying on Saturday October 10, 2026 @01:14AM (#50029780)
Lots of big lobbying companies corrupting Australia, too.

Less "sophisticated" countries just tend cut out the lobbyist middleman and call it what it is - bribery.

There is not much goodwill in the world left towards Sony. They have screwed their customers over repeatedly (removal of PS3 Linux, PC spyware, removal of physical disks, banning arbitrary users online etc.), which makes the moral case for Sony piracy more ambiguous.
Re:Using Blu-ray M-Disk as Backup of Last Resort on Monday October 05, 2026 @05:57PM (#49971424)
Hard drives are way bigger, but M-Disk is more reliable for very long term storage.
This is true, progress has stopped on the RAM and VRAM front.

Many new laptops come with 8GB as standard, the same as 12 years ago.

My 1060 from 2016 has 6GB of VRAM. A 5060 from 2025 has 8GB.

Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @04:34PM (#49914006)
And the anti-psychotic drugs Google feeds Gemini makes it hallucinate badly.

The US companies still have trillion dollar valuations like there is a monopoly. There just isn't one. They are all within a few percent of each other on the benchmarks.

The slightly lower Chinese open models are good enough for almost everything, too, and much cheaper. Like with humans there is plenty of employment for people with below genius level IQ's.

Australia already has AI tax judgements:

Or George Carlin - perhaps it's just me, but modern shows aren't that funny anymore.

An as individual or small company director, you would get arrested.

If you have billions of dollars to pay for lawyers and have political influence, you are above the law.

Re:Rebuilding a 1995 GPS Time Server so I don't get Telstra'd on Monday September 07, 2026 @06:11PM (#49603530)
This is not a great idea. Pre-2000 GPS time server firmwares do no handle leap seconds properly.
Re:A practical guide to running 8x RTX PRO 6000's on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @04:25PM (#49541990)
For those who can't afford RTX 6000's you can unlock around 20% increased card to card speed on consumer GPUs using this library:

https://github.com/aikitoria/open-gpu-kernel-modules

The hardware supports it, but Nvidia disabled it if the driver detects cheaper cards.

Re:True Rate of Unemployment on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @12:41AM (#49531799)
Similar statistics for Australia: https://www.roymorgan.com/findings/10192-australian-unemploy...

It all depends on the definition of "Unemployment". Most governments do not count you as unemployed if you've stopped looking for work, been unemployed for over 6 months, or if you made $25 as an Uber driver for 1 hour's work that month.

Re:How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been? on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @12:35AM (#49531764)
Very true. The problem is mainstream business media hasn't asked the questions that Zitron has.

So, much like current US politics, we're left with hype on both sides. That's all that gets the clicks/attention, and little balanced analysis in the middle.

Re:How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been? on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @11:01PM (#49531220)
The fact is there is BullSh_t and hype on both sides.

Both Zitron and AI execs have good points, but both are trying to sell you something. The murky truth lies between the two extremes.

IMHO, having Zitron around is a counter to the AI leaders. Is he the best? No. Is he the loudest? Yes.

Dan Ariely's fraud is pretty widespread.

He sold his research to an insurance company, who should have known better: https://www.lemonade.com/blog/oh-behave/

Looks good. However, an RF question: Both CC1314 and LR2021 are sub 1GHz components, are you not working outside their spec at 1.090GHz?
