Re:Stop Focusing on What You Don't Have
on Tuesday August 06, 2013 @02:56PM (#6168465)
The sad reality is, even after reading this article most folks will resolve to once again, blaming others for the things they don't have. It's not that most people don't know they should work harder to strive for their own, but rather it's a lot easier to blame someone else, and humans are naturally lazy. Most people know, but don't act, imho.

I wonder how many technologies out there exist, which would allow us to go far beyond our current state of the world, but we simply don't know about them. In a such an interconnected world, it sure feels that innovations are not very well combined to move us forward. Good article, btw.

I like the idea. It'd be great to see more designers in the mix, but I suppose that will happen over time.

Actually, it seems there is no explanation as to what happens if you choose to opt out. I imagine they are required o ask you by law, but that's why they are trying hard not to make it very obvious.
Re:YC Facelift: Instacart
on Wednesday October 17, 2012 @01:09PM (#4665422)
One thing that is very good about this design and Instacart should adopt are the promoted/discounted items on the top. If Instacart tracked my most recurring purchases, and occasionally gave me this banner-like ads to recommend a discounted product, I'd click on it. I like how Doritos, for example, really stand out in this image.
That said, you know how clients sometimes say "Make everything bold so that everything stand out!" Well, that's exactly what you did. because you cluttered the entire interface with similar 'bold' content, everything now is a blur. It's virtually impossible for my eyes to focus.
All-in-all, decent attempt, but in my opinion, you did not succeed.
Re:Show HN: instafilter.io, a cloud API for applying filters to images
on Tuesday September 18, 2012 @04:25PM (#4540335)
This sounds like a really neat service. Just about a year ago a friend and I wanted to do a filtering app for our own use, but didn't seem to find any straight-forward resources to apply filters w/out doing too much development on our own. This is awesome; we may actually considering doing the old app again, thanks to these guys.

That's cool. I am curious to see what Grubwithus is going long-term. Right now it's dining with strangers, but maybe in a few years it could be like flash-mob; hangout with strangers!
Re:How many companies in the Valley develop software with tests?
on Tuesday July 24, 2012 @07:00PM (#4288506)
Yeah man. Tests take forever to develop. It's a lot easier to test manually, upon release. Sure, something is usually broken, but the time saved on rigorous testing is worth it.

The point is that under a subscription model these developers would be able to provide you with ongoing updates and quality service, w/out having to surrender to Google.
Re:The Sparrow Problem
on Monday July 23, 2012 @07:46PM (#4283598)
I think you're right. It's really bazaar why Google hasnt implemented those features into Gmail, but if they were seamlessly integrated into Sparrow, I'd pay.
Re:The Sparrow Problem
on Monday July 23, 2012 @07:44PM (#4283588)
Paid upgrades are allright, but if they had a subscription model, that'd be even better. Imagine if you could just pay $5/month for Sparrow? If you live inside your email, that's $60/year well spent and for the developers it's a significant boost in $ generated.

It's grate to be dedicated to your business, but don't say 'never'. There may come a day when you've exhausted all and every one option on the table, but getting acquired for the sake of a high-bonus job would allow you to preserve sanity and to get some $, before once again embarking on the journey that is entrepreneurship.

Re:Pixate - beautiful native mobile apps with CSS
on Friday July 20, 2012 @06:32PM (#4273176)
Why don't they just create the product and have me pay for it? The company is already funded, why should I go ahead and pre-order something now, knowing it might not work as advertised when it's ready. I'd much rather pay $300 when the product is on the shelf, when I can evaluate the pro's and con's. Sure, if this was a project that hasn't been started and looked very promising, I would give it some money, for a chance to get something great. In this case, it seems I don't have to risk, but rather just have to wait.

Once in a blue moon you may be able to get a decent design from 99, but if you browse around their site (which has been made really hard lately), most of the work is of mediocre quality. I doesn't do "design" justice.
Re:Show HN: Scoutzie, 444 best mobile designers for hire.
on Wednesday July 18, 2012 @12:57PM (#4261638)
That's true. Design is a process and a complicated one too. It's very hard to just buy 1 unit of design. That's precisely why many designers prefer to work on projects, rather than per hour. Once you've settled on a project and set the price, the complexity goes away.
