Unfortunately, for the people who strongly believe that Chat Control is the way, they will use these types of events as further evidence as to why spying on everyone is the best deterrent.
Re:TikTok Ban Bill Is Patriot Act 2.0 Trojan Horse on Thursday March 30, 2023 @04:50AM (#35369829)
I’m assuming this is and will be a classic example of the “First they came for….” Quote where it goes through the list of ‘others’ that is not oneself then, at the end when the authority finally shows up to take the ‘you’ in the ‘oneself’, no one is left to defend you and thus you also go down.

They will aim to eliminate tiktok as, everyone in the us higher ups agree it has to go, but who will be next afterwards? If in the future, Facebook doesn’t bend its knee to shovel out state propaganda, will it too go?

The very scary part of the bill, if true, is the outright banning of VPNs.

As a Finn, I’m not too worried about myself right now, but should USA fall into a complete Surveillance State with monitoring and it’s own version of China’s Social Credit system, it will have huge ramifications on EU and probably my country Finland.

Re:It's later than you think on Tuesday September 10, 2019 @04:47PM (#20933529)
As a Foreign Reader, it really pains me to read that there exists parents in other countries (maybe mostly USA?) that worry about whether their kid will one day become a School-Shooter. :(
Re:Phone and laptop searches at US border 'quadruple' on Friday May 03, 2019 @03:15AM (#19816235)
Always use Encryption. This news is disturbing but understandable since Americans hardly batted an Eye when it was revealed to them they were being spied on.
Re:The Heart of a Swimmer vs. the Heart of a Runner on Thursday April 04, 2019 @04:01PM (#19576502)
Hi! You typically want to breath out through your noise, then inhale through the mouth when you go for air.

Another tip that comes immediately to mind is try using a swimmer’s snorkel. At first, it’ll be really difficult to keep from water going into your nose but after a few practices, your nose and it’s canals will block out water as a reflex, enabling you to breath through your mouth the entire swim. Hope this helps and sorry for English!

Re:Why It’s Easy for a Bounty Hunter to Find People on Tuesday April 02, 2019 @02:05PM (#19556935)
Most important step, don’t put yourself in a situation, where a bounty hunter is after you to begin with.
Re:Ask HN: What VPN service are you currently using? on Sunday February 24, 2019 @10:18PM (#19242589)
F-Secure Oyj is a Finnish company. Due to cultural and societal standards, Finns take their work and product very seriously. If anyone or anything was shady and put peoples’ privacy at risk, the company would be shutdown immediately. It would be on the Finnish news for decades. ;)
Re:Oodi, Helsinki’s new flagship library on Tuesday February 19, 2019 @12:13PM (#19200606)
Yes, of course!
I think user ‘sixothree’ was stating that a picture would show after unlocking the phone, not after a call. I myself, have had it happen to me several times couple months ago and thought it was really creepy. It almost seemed as if someone was using the front camera without my knowledge. Thought it to be glitch or something at that time.
Re:I woke up unable to speak English on Friday October 19, 2018 @03:32PM (#18259340)
I remember reading cases where elderly people in nursing homes who have lived in (Sweden?) for almost their entire reverted to speaking Finnish as that was the language they grew up speaking.

I put Sweden in parentheses with a question mark because I can’t be sure that is in fact Sweden. It could also be the US. I read about it awhile ago and not in English. Sorry.

Re:11% of Americans don’t use the internet on Tuesday July 24, 2018 @01:11AM (#17598257)
What’s wrong with having a bookbag?

Here in Finland, practically everyone carries one. From young kids to grown adult men and women. I even saw an old person with one the other day. One can’t carry as much nor is it practical to use briefcases.

Question: wouldn't it just be more feasible for American govt to request to have all the numbers to be handed to them prior to the sale? That way they would know, where it was bought and be able to track down by whom.

Sorry for my English. I hope my question is understandable.

This is exactly the issue that should be stressed repeatedly. When a firm advertises itself as such, that values customers' privacy, etc etc. There should not be any logs, espeically if they make it their number one selling-point.

Regarding illegle activities, if there is a will strong enough that warrents Powers that be to track down something, one way or another, it will happen. No matter, how much one deludes himself into a sense of security. The idiot in the article shoudln't have been posting shit in a fucking irc channel to begin with.

Pardon my english, am very tired and not my mother-language.

Re:A Homomorphic Encryption Illustrated Primer on Monday May 14, 2018 @11:25AM (#17066275)
Great comment! I’m surprised this article does not have many replies. This is incredible step forward in Cryptography. Thank you for your expansion.
Of course, the police will find a way to weaponise them. In the end, the Police will justify its weaponisation by saying things like “it is for Officer’s safety” or “It neutralises a ‘threat’ without putting a officer’s life at risk.” Similar avenues have been taken already to justify small police stations owning fucking tanks in USA. A more realistic route, I’m willing to wager on, is that Military will do it first and it will handed down to a Gestapo Force near you! Er, I mean Police Department!
Re:Why is it hard to make friends over 30? (2012) on Wednesday February 21, 2018 @12:13AM (#16427024)
But it’s far more better to time everything just right so that one arrives at said meeting right on time, no later nor sooner.

I think living in Finland has conditioned this type of attitude of not being too early(for fear of wasting time waiting) or too late (fear of being rude). One thing that helps significantly is to know travel times(by bus, car, etc) and allocate rough estimate to them. Luckily most Euro countries have good public transport to make planning ahead less stressful.

Re:When will the world reach 'peak child'? on Saturday February 10, 2018 @01:53AM (#16346231)
When you say SA has been complaining about Euro Mosques teaching Extreamism, which definition of Extreamism are you referring to?

The formal one or what Saudis find Extreme? If it is the latter, then Saudis’ complaints would be laughable and ironic since their Human Rights’ record isn’t what anyone would laud them for.

So I could you liable (by your own creation argument) for having a car of yours(hypothetically you are a Owner of a car dealer) be used in a hit and run? That does really sound like a world you want to live in mate?
Re:Is Your English Accent British or American? on Monday January 15, 2018 @12:36AM (#16148712)
Torilla tavataan!!
I was reading your comment thinking to myself, “by these characteristics, a Mathematician would make a great President!” but then I read “must be a good orator” and all hope was lost.
I have never upvoted on this site but for you, I will.

As far as I know from my studies, the Americans have given their President loads of power. It would be quite a challenge to rewrite and redistribute powers of President, should he become a mere Public Figure like the Queen of England. If Americans were to accept undergoing such a change, might as well have more than two main parties and take money out pf politics. I suspect us to be dead by then.

Re:The Tor Project Defends the Human Rights Racists Oppose on Thursday August 17, 2017 @03:28PM (#15040011)
This is a brilliant response. We must value Privacy and Security above all else. Once we open the door to oppress a group's voice we unanimously despise: we allow our own voices to be oppresssd in the future.
Re:VPN Report – Reviews of the top VPNs on Thursday August 10, 2017 @05:24AM (#14977942)
Horrible article. If he tried the services he didn't like the websites for (fucking childish excuse btw), he would realise that airvpn offers all the services he was treating as a pro. This is a dissapointing read, and even more disgusting it made its way up to the top of this great website.
This article is complete shit. No actual data thet proves the now misleading title. Some Yank decided to take a shit on an idea that is eventually going to be reality.
The problem is not that more people die from ladders or cars for that matter, it's that in a polictical landscape: "no tragedy shall go to waste."

We saw similar pushes for strengthening Canada's Surveillance State when they had two terrorist acts. Canada's PM didn't even hesitate.

When an attack or an event happens that puts people in a state of shock and fear, politicians know their nefarious ideas have a higher probability of slipping through the public's filter. UK's PM is doing what has now become an automatic response to any kind of act. Expand government's power at all cost.

Could be a while.
Thank you so much for your work!! Will install it on my arch as soon I get home. :)

I recommend you visit Finland! We have amasing bike paths also. :)

I think most of the Nordic countries share this trait.
