Re:Nobody Is Saying Why OpenAI and Anthropic Had Outages on Friday September 04, 2026 @03:11PM (#49568910)
Ha. It's a role/title for the lifetime of the incident -- it's useful to have someone to keep things moving, keep track of workstreams, and to know who the decision-maker is, especially for bigger incidents. I'm just a SWE who works on infrastructure.
Re:Nobody Is Saying Why OpenAI and Anthropic Had Outages on Friday September 04, 2026 @02:53PM (#49568622)
I work at OpenAI and I was the Incident Commander for yesterday's outage.

We had a routing error within our infra that caused issues for some of our products. It was not related to the Astra launch. We don't comment on other providers' outages.

Re:How to defer US taxes on Thursday March 19, 2026 @04:43PM (#47445780)
I'm not an accountant or tax lawyer (in fact, I'm not any kind of lawyer). My layman's understanding is that value -- from goods and services -- is taxed when it moves between legal entities, be those people, estates, or corporations. This is not a prescriptive legal framework as far as I know, but is a descriptive framework which I have observed and which makes sense to me morally.

You paid income taxes on the money when you earned it because it left your employer's pocket and went into yours: the ownership of the value (money) has moved. You paid sales tax when you bought it because you exchanged money for the ring: the ownership of value (money, and a ring) has moved. And you pay an estate tax on it when it transfers from your estate to your children because, you guessed it, the ownership of value has moved.

Re:zvec: embedded vector database on Saturday February 14, 2026 @08:26PM (#47020231)
I haven't been following the vector db space closely for a couple years now, but I find it strange that they didn't compare their performance to the newest generation serverless vector dbs: Pinecone Serverless, turbopuffer, Chroma (distributed, not the original single-node implementation). I understand that those are (mostly) hosted products so there's not a true apples-to-apples comparison with the same hardware, but surely the most interesting numbers are cost vs performance.
Re:How Will the Miracle Happen Today? on Friday January 09, 2026 @12:09PM (#46556076)
I've been lucky enough to have a couple big adventures in my life, including living in China for a while as a teenager and later hiking the Pacific Crest Trail (from Mexico to Canada). This has been exactly my experience.

On the PCT, in Mount Shasta while my friends and I were waiting to be seated at Black Bear Diner, an older gentleman came up and asked us about the hike. After talking for five minutes he told us he wanted to buy us breakfast and handed me a 100 dollar bill. I have dozens of such stories -- it was always easy to find a hitch into and out of town and often I would be offered a room to stay in. It's hard to describe but when you're an a quest, big or small, people just really want to help. Over the course of the trail I came to agree with the author: these people were doing me a kindness, yes, but I was also paying with experience, stories, levity.

I agree with the other commenters that one can't always be a kindee. Next time you're driving up the west coast and see a dirty hike with a dirty pack, pick them up :^)

Mark Zuckerberg would like a word with you

My complaint about Ed Zitron is that he's _always_ shouting into the void about something. A lot of the issues he covers are legitimate and deserve the scorn he gives them but at some point it became hard for me to sort the signal from the noise.

Couldn't you also make this argument about cloud infrastructure from the standard hyperscaler cloud providers (AWS, GCP, ...)? For that matter, couldn't you make this argument about dependency your business has which it purchases from other businesses which are competing against each other to provide it?
Re:Can We Still Recover the Right to Be Left Alone? on Tuesday April 22, 2025 @04:08PM (#43765770)
My understanding is that permits, especially quota permits in locations like the Cascades, are to protect the wilderness from too many people. In that case it sounds to me like the ranger was being a good steward of the land. In your case you may have been pack in, pack out (though there's still waste to think about), but in general that's not true and I don't see a non-blanket approach here.

I'm sure one of them will comment here and tell you. Just as soon as they fix their wifi driver, and oh shit the bluetooth is broken too, okay time to open up the local copy of the arch wiki..

From the post

Which is a good thing! It's great that we've eliminated certain classes of bugs through protocol design.
Re:How to Be a Good Listener on Monday March 04, 2024 @12:22AM (#39587275)
Could you expand on this argument more? My first reaction was negative ("Why would the world be worse if more people felt safe sharing their feelings??") so I would like to hear more and challenge my assumptions.

For my part, I'll point to research that suppressing emotions increases risk of suicide[1] and that many more men die from suicide than women[2]. I'm willing to hear out an argument that the world would be worse if these tragic deaths hadn't happened but it requires extraordinary evidence and argumentation IMO.

What in the libertarian nonsense is this? Why not make people ride public transportation or use a public restroom or sit in a park or read about the history of the interstate system or visit a national park just before voting?
Re:Cybertruck Launch on Wednesday November 29, 2023 @06:16PM (#38466708)
This is factually correct (I ride a motorcycle and did a deep dive into the death statistics before getting my license) but your conclusion is tenuous at best.

Motorcyclists consciously take the elevated risk of engaging in a known-unsafe activity and absolutely should take reasonable precautions to keep themselves safe. Even so, it's still a tragedy when someone dies on a motorcycle. Pedestrians, on the other hand, want to walk around their neighborhoods and cities without being killed.

I don't quite know the right words to respond to, "just look at the death statistics and avoid being near cars as a pedestrian," but they're not kind.

Re:Cybertruck Launch on Wednesday November 29, 2023 @06:10PM (#38466647)
"Cars make traveling safer than before, so we shouldn't care about improving automotive safety" is such a weird take.
I have never used twitter but this strikes me as a strange take at best. Many of the most brilliant and passionate engineers I've had the pleasure to work with have been massive shitposters.
Re:OpenAI announces leadership transition on Friday November 17, 2023 @03:47PM (#38310040)
I don't think this is it. The allegations aren't brand new and the board says he lied.
We have a system where doctors and nurses review medications and treatment options for patients. It's called _the medical system_. You know, the one where I can go see my doctor, talk to them about what's going on, and work with them to create a treatment plan that suits my problems and my goals.

Why do we need to bolt on a secondary system that sucks up an untold wealth of time and money?

Ask HN: How do you manage many profiles and credentials for cloud tooling?

I currently manage 11 AWS organizations, each with at least 1 EKS cluster. We're soon going to expand to GKE and other managed Kubernetes offerings since we offer a cloud product and our users want it to be colocated. My question: do you know of any tools that help manage multiple profiles like this? Ideally I could specify which cluster I want to log in to and it knows how to set my AWS (or...
