Re:Inspire HN: Solve the Internet Bystander Problem on Tuesday April 14, 2009 @08:48AM (#561368)
For example, online political fundraising has become increasingly more effective in past decade. By separating the development of the motivation to action from the mechanics of the action itself -- the political rallying from the card swiping -- effective politicians play to the strengths of both the online and offline mediums.
If you're going to harass a group of people it's a lot more tasteful to target one that isn't already persecuted.
I find the app store to be highly competitive. The competition drives down price, which drives down incentive for developers to put too much time into a single app. This provides what many consumers are looking for on the device: $0.99 apps that will entertain them 5 minutes.
I like how the pics page lets you see larger amount of data (pictures) at once than is possible just using Twitter, although you might want to check out the layout on that page in Chrome -- some of the text gets covered by ads.

Other than that, I'm not sure what the site offers me. Are the News / Tech / Gossip pages simply custom lists of people that are followed? Why do I want to use your lists instead of using my Twitter account, which I've already customized to include the people I'm most interested in following?

If your target audience is people don't twitter but might be into it, they're either going to end up moving on to actually using Twitter, or decide it's not for them. In either case, they won't keep coming back to your site.

Or if the robots weren't anthropomorphic -- just a box with wheels.

On the one hand, there may be a legitimate argument to be made that the wireless networks just don't have the bandwidth to allow users to use whatever kinds of data-heavy applications they want. On the other hand, that could be solved without violating the Broadband Policy Statement by throttling heavy users' connections.

Replace all copies of IE with a skinned, renamed version of Firefox that calls itself IE 9.
I've been able to play European DVDs on my (N. American) Mac using VLC.
3.0 SDK beta is available today. Can't wait to try it out.

They better be careful or Apple is going to sue them for violating their patent on swipe direction detection.

Unlike most light bulbs, a monitor has a brightness setting that can be set to a comfortable level.

Also the metaphor of ink on paper is still with us in a big way. Dark text on a light background is the norm, light on dark is the exception.

Re:How I make 15K a month at AdSense on Wednesday March 11, 2009 @01:40PM (#512112)
Seems to me the second part is only lame because he's doing it strictly to make money. If he were doing it for a more creative project it would just be self-promotion.
Re:The realities of selling an IPhone app on Tuesday March 10, 2009 @08:26AM (#509830)
"403 Error - Forbidden" speaks to the realities of selling iPhone apps as much as any other article I've read recently.
Re:Poll: What browser do you use? on Friday March 06, 2009 @02:29PM (#505853)
Back and forth between Firefox, Safari and Chrome.
Re:Why Mahalo employed a felon hacker on Thursday March 05, 2009 @02:02PM (#504613)
The whole story looks like it's been voted down to -2. The low contrast line needs to be drawn somewhere.

Not to the extent that they do now, at least in pop music.
Re:Twitter is broken on Wednesday March 04, 2009 @10:30PM (#503818)
Not at all. I mean, here I am talking about the same thing.
Re:Twitter is broken on Wednesday March 04, 2009 @06:39PM (#503599)
I'm having the same problem. I was signed in and everything was hunky-dory but then I signed out just to test your example... bad idea. Now I'm stuck out!

This happened to me the other day, and I was all confused because normally when a site is down I can Twitter about it but with Twitter down there was nowhere to go. It was only down for a moment though, so problem averted. Still, not sure HN is the right forum for up-to-the-minute chit-chat about what sites are broken...

I like this one too:

The temptation to quit will be greatest just before you are about to succeed.

Seems hard to prove but I guess that's not the point.

And yet, a link to a one-sided propaganda comic strip gets 103 upvotes.
Re:AppCraver Offers to Review My App for $50 on Sunday February 15, 2009 @06:57PM (#482465)
I'm not sure that's the case. Although it's likely that many of the app reviews on AppCraver were paid for, there's no way of telling that a particular one was. For example, there are a couple of negative reviews on the site which I imagine weren't paid for.
Re:AppCraver Offers to Review My App for $50 on Sunday February 15, 2009 @06:55PM (#482460)
Yes. Thank you for pointing that out—that typo's been fixed.

Speaking of Apptism, I like that site a lot, except that I can't figure out what those little numbers in red circles mean. I'm sure they explain on their site somewhere, just haven't found it yet.

Re:AppCraver Offers to Review My App for $50 on Sunday February 15, 2009 @11:56AM (#482068)
Normally I'm not a fan of self-posting but I wanted to follow up with the discussion that went on here last weekend on this subject (http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=472408) and let anyone who's interested know that AppCraver was the offending party.
Apple seems to be getting eviler by the day. It's the same kind of attitude they're taking with Palm and the Pre—threatening legal action to scare people away from doing things they really ought to have a right to do. I guess that's what happens when you're at the top of a market.

Re:One free interaction on Monday February 09, 2009 @04:27PM (#474194)
I noticed two friends who use their mouse to repeatedly select and deselect text in web browsers as they read pages online. This is absolutely crazymaking for onlookers, but really satisfying for them.

I do this all the time. I hadn't ever really thought about it.
