Maybe they should disclose this at the top of the article, not the bottom.

Re:Tiny Plastic Is Everywhere on Monday August 20, 2018 @06:26PM (#17804606)
There's this same argument with recycling, reuse, etc. I.E how many times do I have to use my cloth bag before the resources it took is less than that of a normal paper bag. Recycling is the same way, IIRC, aluminum is the only thing that's cheaper to recycle, energy wise.

I really wish more studies would look into the Energy per Ton for creating our consumer products.

Re:Ask HN: What made you learn Python? on Thursday August 16, 2018 @05:12PM (#17778450)
In high school I wanted to make a Twitter bot that tweeted about the weather everyday. I had an easy time with Python's Libraries / Ecosystem.
Re:Name and Shame: IBM on Thursday August 16, 2018 @04:51PM (#17778307)
I thought this exactly, I'm guessing OP was just steamrolling her because she was asking a basic question
Re:Name and Shame: IBM on Thursday August 16, 2018 @04:44PM (#17778264)
Considering OP could have spent part of that 3 day retreat looking up what new grad salaries are at IBM.

Don't discount your mod because it's made for Minecraft, this looks like a lot of fun!
Picking nits, but yes
As someone from Kansas, absolutely an issue. It's probably 90% white, there's no culture in Kansas City, just a bunch of hipsters with clear framed glasses. When I interned for Garmin a few years back, they had intern events to hype us up about living in Kansas City.

It's essentially a cultural wasteland, and tech jobs are few and far between. The startup scene there is a joke too, they suck up new college grads too stupid to realize they can work elsewhere and pay them below market.

Re:Banner ads on CNN.com contain keyloggers on Tuesday July 17, 2018 @01:48PM (#17551589)
I seriously think people shouldn't be able to comment / see comments on HN unless they've at least clicked on the darn link. I took one look at the "keylogger" source code and recognized it.
Jokes on them, I've purchased all of my tickets via an Android Emulator and GPS spoofing. I've got it setup such that I text my home box that it's "movie time" and I get a response as soon as the app says the card is loaded.
Re:How poverty changes your mindset on Sunday February 25, 2018 @08:46PM (#16462406)
Thank you for sharing your views on poverty. While HN is primarily about programming / tech, there is room for talk about society, etc. I don't agree with your points about being rate limited / banned, all views are valued here if they're inherently non-inflamatory.

Edit: Your Karma given your account is only 3 days old is quite contradicting of your views of HN

FIRE and move to the Netherlands. Work on open source projects.
Re:One year of cycling to work on Tuesday February 20, 2018 @12:18PM (#16421973)
I've got a relatively short bike commute that takes around 20 minutes. By car it's a bit more due to traffic. I get some serious benefits from biking everyday. I'm always alert and awake when I get to work, I get the bare minimum exercise in for the week, I don't have to drive my car.

I'd highly recommend biking to work if your local infrastructure is accommodating.

Take Lauren, for example, she's a super accomplished mech/aero engineer who also happens to be a really good host.

EDIT: Of course she's also involved in FIRST :P

I would expect the opposite effect, given "netflix and chill"'s connotation

I'm unsure about bike stealing, but I know it's cheaper for them to buy new bikes rather than fixing up old ones. They just throw them out in large piles in disrepair.[1]

AH! I took Ravi's class on Computer Graphics two years ago! I still refer to his slides whenever I start a new openGL project. Thanks for sharing!

I wonder if you can get sued for malpractice if you're a math doctor. They'd need proof either way.

Coming out of college I was surprised just how big of a separation there is from web designer / developer, since I was so accustomed to doing both for school projects.

You can just unscrew the back panel. I've looked for a replacement battery for my pebble but to no avail. It's actually a relatively serviceable device if you don't mind soldering. (Mines a gen1 pebble by the way)

Re:Build your own FPGA (2012) on Tuesday June 27, 2017 @07:03PM (#14650355)
One of the biggest issues is complexity. Sure you can make some fairly complex things within an FPGA fabric, like a CPU or GPU. However, you'll see a slow down in two areas. The first is routing, whereas an IC would just have a wire between two components, FGPAs have to route further and through different interchanges. Second, components can only be built up through the basic components of the FGPA, typically a LUT and FFs. The more complex components, the more small parts. Another aspect is memory; blockram works decent but it's an explicit design choice, DRAM via DMA is also a pain too.
Re:Why do so few people major in computer science? on Monday May 29, 2017 @03:29PM (#14440941)
Counter point: You can reason that women wouldn't go into other fields like plumbing, or construction because those are also male dominated. The biggest distinction is that Computer Science can be a path climb the socioeconomic ladder.

> I think it is also the only career which people try to inject diversity just for the sake of it.

Well when you think about the reach of software in the modern world, it can influence anyone. Whereas diversity in plumbing might not be important, having different points of view on a programming team can mean the difference between having your product take off, or fail.

Re:What Is ‘Site Reliability Engineering’? on Thursday April 20, 2017 @11:43AM (#14157678)
I've fallen in love with SRE field. I'm a Computer Engineering senior currently. I'm used two kinds of classes: CS ones where you learn a lot of theory and apply it on a test, then the CprE ones where you also learn, but then have to make it work in labs. I've always liked lab based classes where you have to take a concept to fruition.

I've been interested in all aspects of CprE, and I taught myself how to run a Linux box along with DNS, VPN, and other services. Last year around this time, I was contacted by a recruiter for an SRE internship. At the time, I had no idea what SRE was and I thought it was just a glorified IT job. Boy was I wrong.

I got through a few interviews and got the position for the summer. About a week or two into the internship I fell in love. This job was all about designing and implementing systems that have to be resilient and must scale. The idea of building automation to make my job easier was and is great. It was just like the labs I enjoyed in college.

Fast forward to now, and I'm accepting a full time SRE position at the same company. I couldn't be happier with my choice in specification. The need for resilient, distributed systems will only grow in the coming years, and I'm looking forward to being an SRE.

I think I read that OpenCL on the 480 finally caught up to OpenCL on the 1060. I believe CUDA still works better.

This is the /exact/ kind of elitism that killed Google Glass. The whole "I have this and you don't" mentality is childish and damaging.
