When I was a kid I had a nice cache of coverless books I'd retrieved from the trash bin behind the local Crown Books.
Re:The man who made Wolfenstein on Wednesday December 25, 2019 @10:25AM (#21878814)
Castle Wolfenstein in 1981, which was the first game to include digitized speech and an early example both of stealth gaming and of the World War II shooter.

It was also an early example of procedural generated levels. During startup, it would create and write the castle map layout to the floppy disk. If you wanted to replay the level, you could pull the disk out and add a write protect tab so it couldn’t be overwritten.

Re:Facebook is redesigning its core app on Tuesday April 30, 2019 @07:29PM (#19793050)
There are lots of Facebook groups I like. No one is talking about my neighborhood on HN! But besides interesting local groups, there are amazing niche technical groups on Facebook that would crossover with HN. A few I find useful:

Apple ][ Enthusiasts: https://www.facebook.com/groups/5251478676/

BMW i3 Worldwide: https://www.facebook.com/groups/BMWi3/

Monoprice Mini (3d printer group) https://www.facebook.com/groups/710952782398723/

Commodore Amiga: https://www.facebook.com/groups/CommodoreAmiga/

Calling out the cholesterol is kind of a distraction, because it is no longer what is associated with heart disease. The level of saturated fat in the impossible burger is actually very high.

Impossible Burger, for example, has more than double the saturated fat of an 85% lean beef burger: 3.6 grams per ounce (derived from coconut oil) versus 1.7.

https://www.foodandwine.com/news/great-veggie-burger-debate-...

I know there is debate about the link between saturated fat and heart disease, and further question about the specific types of saturated fat in coconut oil. I have no idea what the truth is, but if you are on a low fat diet, impossible burger isn't a good substitute for beef.

I've tried impossible burger, and thought it was very good, so I'd eat it just for the flavor.

It was as seriously discussed and considered 40 years ago as today. Maybe more seriously as Medicare and Medicaid had recently been enacted, so there was momentum.

There are inexpensive youth and junior skates (<$100), but these are for younger kids. As soon as you are wearing adult sized skates (10-12yrs old), the price is many times that of cleats.

Re:A first naïve look at Truffle Ruby on Friday February 02, 2018 @05:59PM (#16294937)
It's exactly this limit that eventually leads engineering teams at your Dropboxes, Facebooks, Twitters, Tumblrs

True, but those are such extreme edge cases. 99.9999% of projects will never see that kind of demand for scale and speed. Facebook shouldn't switch to Ruby, but that doesn't inform whether Ruby would be viable for many (most) projects.

Re:How WeChat Came to Rule China on Friday February 02, 2018 @05:39PM (#16294788)
I hadn't realized that QQ and WeChat are part of Tencent, but are part of different divisions. It would be interesting to know how collaborative or rivalrous the relation between them is.
Re:USS McCain collision ultimately caused by UI confusion on Thursday November 02, 2017 @06:16PM (#15614795)
I'd call it an interpretation, not a theory. But clearly the conflicting inputs was a UI problem, and while there may be tradeoffs, a better UI could have prevented the AF 447 crash.

Re:I can no longer recommend MailChimp on Tuesday October 31, 2017 @07:09PM (#15597458)
They are just changing the setting, and creating a new default. Not sure why a user of MailChimp would feel the need to switch, or complain they "only" have 7 days to switch the setting to what they want. That's not an unreasonable burden.
Re:Kotlin Features I miss most in Java on Sunday October 29, 2017 @09:05PM (#15582489)
True, but it does have impacts, like you can see less of the overall program on the screen at a time, so to scan through requires more of a look->scroll->look->scroll.
Re:Wines Are No Longer Free to Travel Across State Lines on Sunday October 29, 2017 @05:32PM (#15581534)
Yes, wine.com was one of the the early ecommerce sites. Started in 1995, but may not have been transacting until a few years later.
Re:Why Snapchat Spectacles failed on Saturday October 28, 2017 @08:48PM (#15577483)
In terms of units, Fitbit has probably been the most successful so far (22m units sold in 2016). They don't get attention in the US, but the Mi Band from Xiaomi isn't far behind.
Re:Tea infuser startup Teforia shuts down on Saturday October 28, 2017 @05:05AM (#15574502)
I stand corrected, you are right!
Re:Tea infuser startup Teforia shuts down on Friday October 27, 2017 @11:18PM (#15573825)
Tea pots are good for heating water, but not the best for steeping tea.
Given enough time an asteroid impact presents the possibility of non self inflicted critical failure.
Perhaps he is referring to ECC memory - high end pro model NVIDIA cards have it, and consumer cards don’t. Here is a paper showing that there are memory errors on the consumer non-ecc cards.

Re:Juicero Is Shutting Down on Friday September 01, 2017 @07:01PM (#15152982)
Maybe not enough for Juicero, but sugar is addictive. Their 'juices' had a lot of sugar (via fruit) in them.

You are right that it is the evolution of the sport, but I think it is driven by the increasing value (Billions of dollars at stake), more than the equipment.
Re:Catching the Great American Eclipse at 35,000 Feet on Friday August 25, 2017 @07:16PM (#15103000)
Sat in the back on an Alaska flight to Hawaii and they ran out of food a couple rows before me. Felt like a bad MBA optimization - save $20 on food by under buying at the cost of periodically making a few passenger unhappy for a 5 hour flight.
An accidental shutdown can still fall under overzealous use of power.
You can audit the classes for free, which lets you watch the videos, and take the quizzes but not submit them (which is annoying).

Thankfully, they didn't lose/delete existing data during that outage.
Re:$4k Renault compared to Tesla Model 3 on Wednesday July 19, 2017 @05:39PM (#14808212)
The most reliable mopeds still crash and get hit. Fatalities per mile are greater bicycles and motorcycles than cars.
I agree, but the parent said average person, so I was thinking of someone less experienced.
Most people could differentiate them, but wouldn't be able to identify the higher quality wine.
Re:The Map That Popularized the Word ‘Gerrymander’ on Sunday July 02, 2017 @02:03PM (#14683590)
Elbridge Gerry is an interesting figure in American history. He was Governor of Massachusetts, Vice President to James Madison, signatory of the Declaration of Independence, and Articles of the Confederation. He was at the Constitutional Convention, but ended up voting against it. He was then elected to congress and was an advocate for the Bill of Rights.
Note this study was not about carb cutting, "high fat" in this context means high fat + high sugar, a combo specifically designed and proven to fatten mice. 60% lard, 20% sucrose, 20% casein.
