Are you planning to add blank keycaps or colemak/dvorak keycaps?

You can scale down for less busy hours by just turning it off.

Oh, the Internet? You had no trouble sending me the 404 page, so why not just send me the page with Bard on it?

Re:A brain injury removed my ability to perceive time on Monday November 06, 2023 @08:48PM (#38172107)
It seems like the altered time perception caused behaviors in the moment like interrupting others that can be verified by others, so probably this is not an issue with recall/ability to assess perception of time.
Re:Use YouTube to improve your English pronunciation on Saturday November 04, 2023 @09:31PM (#38147080)
An idiolect, maybe
The "with autism" stuff seems to be pushed by relatives of autistic people. I doubt most autistic people would care.
Sometimes those in need don't want your help.

Sometimes you aren't skilled or knowledgeable enough to help, and you'll just do more harm than good if you try.

Sometimes by helping, you'll cause more harm to yourself than you'll prevent in the other person.

Etc.

If you self report as autistic, you're probably autistic. Especially because, in practice, an autistic person is defined as someone who self-reports autistic traits to a health care provider.
Autistic people are often seen as arrogant because they speak honestly about their strengths (and weaknesses), whereas normal people avoid speaking honestly about their strengths unless they are arrogant.

If people from a region are all doing it, it's not an error, it's a dialect.

Alternatively, your eye doctor is exactly the wrong person to ask, because they have an availability bias.
Re:Emacs Bedrock–A minimal Emacs starter kit on Tuesday September 05, 2023 @11:47AM (#37393373)
When creating a starter kit, one must choose defaults. Choosing the default emacs defaults is still a choice.

What is the simpler choice? Choosing the defaults that are built-in already, or the defaults new users will expect?

I'm a junior Elixir dev.

I write concurrent code without much extra effort compared to non-concurrent code. Elixir makes it easy.

Re:Ask HN: Any interesting books you have read lately? on Thursday August 17, 2023 @10:03AM (#37161728)
The longest fantasy series ever written. Take all Stephen King books, throw in the entire Harry Potter series, and it's still shorter than the Wandering Inn.

I just gave up on the series after book 4. I felt the original main character wasn't getting enough screen time, and didn't really like the newer characters as much.

Re:Tell HN: Airbnb’s transparent pricing is a lie on Monday July 31, 2023 @11:26AM (#36944053)
The price should be the price. Advertising any dollar amount less than what the customer actually has to pay should be fraud.

Even taxes should be included in prices.

And this has to be a top-down, legal thing, rather than something companies can opt-in to, because I think the business consequences of being the only one in your industry with transparent pricing would generally be lethal, and I've heard stories of restaurants going out of business due to including taxes in their prices. People want to pay less, and they'll go to the place they think will charge less. So this has to be enforced top-down.

I imagine there are hundreds fewer drunk driving deaths due to Uber, too.
Why use slow internet when fast internet do trick?
Re:Rethinking Window Management in Gnome on Thursday July 27, 2023 @10:48AM (#36894437)
Any system that tries to guess what I want isn't going to work.

For example, when my browsers or mobile devices try to guess automatically when I want audio to start playing, they're almost always wrong.

Open a browser? Why is a video playing in one of my 30 tabs?

Unplug earbuds from my tablet? Why is an audiobook now playing? I didn't even have the audiobook app open, and haven't listened to any audiobook in months.

If your design relies on intelligently guessing what the user wants, but doesn't actually use any intelligence to do so, then your design is shit.

Give users the tools to do what they want quickly and easily. Don't guess.

I've heard it as: It's like a dog riding a skateboard. It's not impressive how well it rides, it's impressive that it rides at all.

But I can't find the original source or anything.

Re:Is technical analysis just stock market astrology? on Wednesday July 26, 2023 @10:54AM (#36878722)
I don't know about the joke format, but the ideology reminds me of the rationalist's version of Baudrillard's simulacra: https://www.lesswrong.com/tag/simulacrum-levels

At higher levels of simulacra, the statements people make are less about reality, and more about what they want people to believe they believe about reality.

For me, it's the way I say "house". I watched the show House three times all the way through before I realized I say it differently than they say it in the show.

I once posted in subreddit A, and got banned just because I had once posted in the "alt-right" subreddit B (which was an apolitical comedy subreddit).
Re:Diablo on Saturday July 22, 2023 @10:10AM (#36826373)
The gameplay was fun to me when I was literally 5 years old and playing my first ever computer game. I can't understand how an adult would find the Diablo games fun. The atmosphere and art and whatnot are great, though.
Crazy how few dependencies a toy console program needs.

I wonder how minimal a giant web app written in C would be? Would it still compile in a fraction of a second?
