Re:Let's Ditch Google (Verb) on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @01:27PM (#49911854)
I have some triggers that make me stop reading or watching something. Using "google" as a verb is one of them. I perceive people doing that as blindly following a sort of cult, and I am not interested to learn anything from this kind of people.

Tell HN: Couchsurfing.com is now vibe-coded and with official AI generated pics

Today I logged in to Couchsurfing [0] to renew my credit card, even if I had not used this website for years, and to my horror I stumbled upon a sluggish filled with AI-generated website. I had to double-check if I was not on another website by accident. The interface is the stereotype of your typical vibe-coded website: extremely slow, in a weird dark theme and containing a lot of gradient...

This is also the title and theme of a song by Porno Graffiti. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzsB4eKPdJI
Ardour is listed. You need to search for it in the search bar.

If your question was about using Ardour, I used it a bit and I managed to make a tune. I recommend this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACJ1suTVouw

From the home page of the website.

So yet another article playing on FOMO about how urgent it is to get in tune with LLM usage written by someone who teaches how to use LLM.

Not to be confused with the already existing "mappy.com".
Re:Why We're Moving on from Nix on Tuesday March 04, 2025 @03:09PM (#43259338)
Have you tried GNU Guix (the package manager, not the system) as a viable option to replace your Nix usage?
I am using Haxe which compiles to other languages (C++, JavaScript, PHP...). This is a nice language when you want to create a web application or a even a CLI.

If you have played video games by Shiro Games (Evoland, Dune Spice Wars) or Motion Twin (Dead Cells) or even Paper Please!, then you had been exposed to this language.

Re:OpenRA – Classic strategy games rebuilt for the modern era on Saturday January 25, 2025 @06:23PM (#42825986)
I think this is the same reason why people preferred a "Call of Duty" over "Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory" when playing a multiplayer FPS. You do not necessarily want to invest a lot of time to enjoy something.

On a personal note, I really enjoyed "Dune 2000" and "Emperor: Battle for Dune" but I have never really been a huge fan of the "Age of Empire" series. Recently I tried "Impossible Creatures" and it was frustrating. I suppose for I am a very casual RTS player. Each to their own.

Re:Ask HN: How do you organize files on your computer? on Thursday September 26, 2024 @06:09PM (#41664033)
I think you should really check out Johnny.Decimal[0] as a lot of other comments mentioned. Even if you do not apply the decimal prefixes, it will help you reconsider your file organization. The author explains well his concepts of area and categories.

About what I do. In my home directory on my computer, I have one directory called "Zarchive" where I put all the stuff I want to keep. (I called it "Zarchive" because it is a French pun. I keep "mes archives" in it.) The other directories in my home directory are symbolic links/shortcuts linking to directories in "Zarchive" or they are things I do not care to lose.

To organize things in my special directory, I first used Johnny.Decimal. Then, I got rid off the decimal prefixes because I am the sole user of this file hierarchy.

Here is a summary of the directory organization in this directory. I did not put all the directories but you get the idea.

    .
├── index.txt A file explaning what each directory are for.
├── Configuration Conf for my PC (dotfiles, scripts...).
    ├── Knowledge My notes.
├── Media Things I keep but I could find online or in store.
    │ ├── Books
    │ ├── Games
    │ └── Videos
├── Personal All things that are personal (pictures, GTD...).
├── TODO Things I should do one day (
    │ ├── 2024-08-17 Articles to read
    │ └── 2024-08-17 Phone pictures
├── Various Things that I do not know where to put.
└── Work Anything work related (personal or professional)
        ├── Companies
        ├── Employment
        ├── Freelance
        └── Projects
The big advantage of having a good file hierarchy in one directory is that it makes archiving way way easier. For example when I sync my data with an external hard drive, I can use a script to compare what files changed and another script to copy things between my computer and the hard drive while automatically making zip in my computer to avoid losing something by accident.

Maybe I could do a full blog post on my file organization and its management if you want.

Anyway, to get back on your topic. If I were you, I would put all the files you mentioned in the directory "Personal". Now for your example for the eye doctor: or you could create a directory "2024-09-26 Eye doctor appointment" with everything in it; or you could have directories named "Receipts" and "Health", and in Health you have a symbolic link/shortcut to the receipt in Receipts; or you could have a copy of the receipt in both directory. I prefer to make each directory independent, so I am not fond of the shortcut solution.

For your family member's files, you could have a directory for each of them. Maybe you could create a directory "Family" in the top directory and each member is responsible for his or her stuff.

With that said, it does not completely remove the need to search for files. Yes after doing that you are now organized with a good file hierarchy, but that does not mean you cannot use a good tool for finding files. I do not have much suggestion on this domain because I am lucky enough to be good at remembering where I put stuff. Most of the time... :)

As a final word: I really encourage you first to read Johnny.Decimal, then to really take the time to define the areas and categories without rushing, then to organize the files, and finally to use the search tools. Some people say that you do not need to organize anything and that you can rely only on the search tools but I completely disagree. Tools are not available forever, and it does not solve the issue of syncing correctly your files and archiving them.

I hope I was clear. I did not expect rambling so much when I started to write this post. Good luck for organizing your stuff!

Ask HN: Why do you write comments/tweets/posts?

I personally rarely want to comment articles or videos. Most of the time, I cannot find anything interesting to add; and a lot of time when I read other people comments I do not think most of them add any value.I am interested to know why you write those comments, tweets or posts. I am specially curious about heavy writers commenting at least once a week.

Go talk to this person, and accept the job and help. Ignore the thoughts you can have on refusing this person's help. Do the job without pushing yourself too much. Use the money to follow a therapy and to try new things as silly as they may seem (workout, meditation, sophrology, hypnosis...) as long as they are not harmful (drug consumption, gambling...). Let yourself at least a year before considering suicide as an option.

Good luck in your life. You are rock-bottom in your life right now, but that does not mean you cannot have a good and happy life later.

How are the working conditions and the wage in Sega or Nintendo compared to the rest of the industry? I know game development has a bad reputation in this regard.

Thank you for your report. This is strange, everything is alright on my side. I suppose I will have to instigate this issue more later.

I have just read your article. This is interesting, I keep that in mind if one day I change my mind about Go and use it.

Ask HN: How long does it take for you to write a blog post?

I am not used to write blog posts. I have just posted here a quite small technical blog post (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34807152). This blog post took me a bit more than six hours to write for the English part, and two more for the translation. I know I would have written it faster if English were my native tongue, if I took less time to test the code snippets, or if I were less...

Re:Ask HN: How do you fall asleep? on Saturday December 03, 2022 @12:15PM (#33845089)
My explanation may not be accurate but this is how I see sophrology and what I remember from my lessons. Note that what I explain is not necessarily my opinion or belief. I am not someone who is into spiritual or "new age" stuff.

Sophrology is a relaxation method. When you do a session, you focus on a particular issue to remove or lower it. This is a goal-centered method. I will explain a bit how you do a session.

The first thing to do when you start sophrology is to learn how to breathe "correctly". Most adults seem to breathe "from the torso". This is not good because it constraints your breath, and you do not feel relaxed. On the other hand, babies breath using "the belly". You can see their bellies inflate and deflate while they breathe. Using this technique, you have plenty of space to breathe correctly, and you feel relaxed.

Sophrology divides the body in five zones: the head, the neck, the torso (with the arms and hands), the upper part of your belly, the lower part of your body down to the feet. Then the belly button represents the whole body. During the session you will have to focus on each of these six zones one at a time.

In each session, you have multiple exercises to do. You stand when you do an exercise; then you sit in a relaxed position for a while so your body and your mind absorb what you learned from the exercise.

1. You "clean" yourself by doing dynamic stretching. Slowly you start to close your eyes for the whole session and you focus on breathing correctly.

2. You take consciousness on your body, by focusing on each zone at a time.

3. You relax yourself, each zone at a time.

4. You do the exercise corresponding to what you want to achieve with this session (getting sleep, make your anger disappear, lowering a physical pain...);

5. At last you reactivate yourself physically, and finally you open your eyes.

The main point of the session is to go into a state that is close to slumber before you reactivate your body. You should feel yourself very relaxed and not wanting to do anything in this state. Also during the whole session you use positive reinforcement. You must talk to yourself in a positive manner.

I suppose it helped me because this is a mix of relaxation exercises, auto-hypnosis and positive psychology. It is not coated into spiritual and religious stuff: I am not trying to ascend into a new layer of existence. It is not focusing on negative things as it does in stoicism.

To be honest, it was difficult at first for me to do ridiculous exercises and paying for that! :)

But it worked for me and I feel way better now that I am not anxious anymore at the idea of going into bed. As I wrote, I do not understand why it was so effective so quickly after I struggled for years and years with sleep issues. And I do not understand why it is still that effective now that I do not do the exercises very often.

Re:Ask HN: How do you fall asleep? on Friday December 02, 2022 @02:27PM (#33835528)
You could try sophrology. I always struggled to fall asleep, I even went to a doctor specialist in sleep disorder without success: I did a polysomnography which revealed nothing bad physiologically, no medicines or tips helped me. My sleep was really an issue in my day-to-day life for at least 15 years.

By despair last year I did six one-to-one lessons with a specialist in sophrology. I now regularly quickly fall asleep even if I do not do the exercises as often as I should.

I consider myself cured, and I still do not understand why I am now.

Re:Dracula Theme – A dark theme for many different apps on Thursday December 09, 2021 @05:19AM (#29495761)
I use (Neo)Vim on a terminal with the option "colorscheme" set on "default". When I tried Dracula and set up my terminal color scheme with it, it made diffs on Vim unreadable (sometimes background color was the same as the foreground color). I have never seen anywhere any mention of this issue.

Did someone also have this problem here?
