I wonder if this is another ransomware situation
It's totally bonkers that soldiers are alright with killing hundreds of thousands of people and destroying whole cities without even flinching.
Re:The quest to trap carbon in stone on Tuesday December 28, 2021 @07:30PM (#29720143)
"The fundamental problem is that the earth was in a balance,"

Nit pick but, is there anything that says the earth isn't or won't be at a balance?

Sure, climate change will be hugely impactful, especially for humans, but I figure the earth will still be in balance, just not the one we are used to.

Can't wear a beautiful moon.
Anyone know why you would need to store CO2 and not just regular air in this case?

Is the reasoning here correct?
Re:TikTok: All under-16s' accounts made private on Wednesday January 13, 2021 @09:16AM (#25762178)
Thought of this wholesomeness aspect today as well:

I watch a lot of strength training/weight lifting videos on TikTok, and I would say the vast majority of the comments are supportive, positive and/or constructive.

Too little, too late.

> But regime change through force is an impossible task.

Isn't that exactly how most coups are done? Take Iran in '79 as an example.

I don't mean this abrasively but, referring to an unknown third party for credibility and then telling people to do their research does not seem overly convincing to me.

How does using Facebook via another client prevent or diminish Facebooks data monopoly?
> For Todoist users, the Board View was introduced in this new update, a more visual way to organize your Planner projects.

For someone not familiar with Planner, this sentence was really confusing for me, "for users of other service, there's a feature in this service", and it's not clear what the connection is.

Re:The impact of Apple Silicon Macs on Broadway on Friday December 25, 2020 @03:34AM (#25535141)
> Some shows I’ve worked at set aside a $10,000-$12,000 budget for two keyboard rigs. That sounds like a lot of money at first, but it’s not.

> Apple Silicon changes everything for Broadway electronic music designers. The new M1 Mac mini is capable of running high-end sample libraries and virtual instruments in a stable manner, and it’s only going to get better with M2, M3, and M4-series chips in the future. The performance per dollar characteristics of Apple Silicon machines are going to have a huge impact on Broadway’s sound, and I’m very excited to see, or hear, what happens.

What will happen is probably that your budget will get reduced, since you don't need as much to deliver the same quality as today.

"knock knock" "who's there?"

Ask HN: What do you do while waiting for builds to complete?

Out of curiosity, what do you do while waiting for builds to complete/compiling? I find it difficult to make good use of the time when the time it takes is long enough that it doesn't feel natural to stare blankly into the screen, but short enough that it doesn't make sense to switch to a new task.

16 hours for a mouse is probably equivalent to fasting multiple days for humans.
Re:The harmful impact of Audible-exclusive audiobooks on Wednesday July 29, 2020 @04:39PM (#23991343)
In case of Libro, you have both Libro and the bookstore as middle men. In the Amazon case, you only have Amazon.

Off topic but, why would anyone want to buy audiobooks via their local bookstore? I haven't seen this anywhere else: when is it something desirable to ADD a middleman rather than removing them?
