I wonder if the averages would move if it said “you are a policeman and your performance will be judged based on your decisions”.
They would sit around nervously looking at each other, waiting for the under-the-table motivational action to end. Aaaand scene!
Very disappointed by Hetzner Ubuntu mirrors not getting updated in time. Had to manually override to get the patch.
Re:A page looks innocent: the algorithms behind a typeset page on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @09:15AM (#50180423)
Nice visuals, but apart from the PDF, this happens on your phone too, every second, not just in books or catalogs.
Re:Triple-A Minesweeper on Friday October 09, 2026 @03:17PM (#50025380)
And which half of the staff gets fired day after release?
Re:Triple-A Minesweeper on Friday October 09, 2026 @03:13PM (#50025339)
Nice but the logos are skippable, which is not realistic.
Re:Show HN: Quake ported to safe Rust, playable in browser on Friday October 09, 2026 @01:39AM (#50016418)
Safe rocket jumping? Unlikely.
Re:iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @06:21AM (#49710244)
Yeah and maybe you can replay your own requests to Siri if it doesn't catch it the first time?

I hope websites like notion fix their code, which is extremely bad on anything but Chrome.
So glad I just converted my site to Hugo.. happy to get away from this whole bunch of people.
Re:Fuck it, make it anyway on Saturday September 12, 2026 @01:24PM (#49674719)
Maintenance, sure, but also: games have one chance to be good, and that is at release. With a multi-year development cycle, what we get at release (of the good ones) is like a version 4 or 5 of an app. Everything is connected and changed (and thus maintained) over the years.
Re:Fuck it, make it anyway on Saturday September 12, 2026 @10:05AM (#49672447)
Apps usually have tons of boilerplate, so pure LoC may be similar. But in density, no contest. I recently dug up an old objc app of mine and was shocked how few lines it took to send a REST request, parse and process it. Nowadays it is split into multiple files, usecases, repositories, protocols to accomplish the same. All in the name of testability or architectural “correctness”. Write that in a game and you’re fired because it kills performance.
You own the license. The license can be revoked. Don’t look for ways to prove them wrong. Just don’t buy it.
Re:GPT-6 Astra on OpenRouter on Saturday September 05, 2026 @08:44AM (#49576008)
I misread the title as GPTA-6, wondering what sort of crazy crossover was happening.
Re:GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven on Saturday August 29, 2026 @05:12AM (#49488254)
Learning this the hard way as I add gamepad support for my touch-based game. All UI elements need to be interlinked, spatially!
How is this better than Prometheus?
Re:Apple announces changes for apps in the European Union on Wednesday August 19, 2026 @07:39AM (#49360174)
It's clear that Apple won. They will get their money, one way or another, but mostly the old way, because they managed to make the new way so unattractive. Good job EU!
Re:Saying No on Monday August 10, 2026 @01:11AM (#49239430)
Not even a thermostat to on-off automatically and reach a preset temperature?
Re:Saying No on Sunday August 09, 2026 @03:40PM (#49234973)
Some ACs are on-off only, with no other setting. Like some people, apparently.
Re:The Grid That Doubles the Strength of the Ground on Sunday August 09, 2026 @05:28AM (#49229844)
It's a transcript of the video, which I enjoyed.
Re:Hop.earth – OpenStreetMap based car racing game on Tuesday August 04, 2026 @02:33PM (#49172897)
I didn't find the buggy.

I honestly hope they put an unrealistic amount of wilhelm scream into the learning process, just for fun.

Re:Geekbench 7 on Thursday July 23, 2026 @04:22PM (#49027516)
Slightly offtopic but where are we on Quake 1 timedemo with current hardware? Is it sub-second on modern machines?
Re:Cruller: Bun's Zig Runtime, Continued on Zig 0.16 on Thursday July 23, 2026 @05:22AM (#49018901)
I feel bad for C++. Oh wait, I don't.
Re:Minecraft: Java Edition now uses SDL3 on Monday July 20, 2026 @09:13AM (#48978415)
Indeed! And the content updates were done using a built-in subversion client! Quite innovative.
Re:Why American ambulance rides are so expensive on Friday July 10, 2026 @02:59AM (#48856638)
Uber for ambulances, got it. Claude, get to work. We will submit for Apple app review at EOD.
Re:Show HN: Davit, a Apple Containers UI on Wednesday July 08, 2026 @10:03AM (#48832137)
Not on iOS unless you also pay annual membership to put it on the AppStore OR rebuild & reinstall the personal-account build every 30 or so days.
Re:Workers Cache on Monday July 06, 2026 @10:29AM (#48805155)
Reinventing the web, one service at a time. Is it really that hard to build things like this on a per-case base, small scale, all on a bare bones VPS? Do we need a global gateway to help us not screw up the basics? Service looks nice but makes me sad somehow.
