News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

MrDrone

I recently spent some time out that way staying at the Hart Mountain Refuge and visited the place where Oregon, California and Nevada meet just south of nearby Adel. I was fascinated about how remote everything is even in a modern vehicle.

I couldn't imagine traveling that area by foot or horse. Eastern Oregon is a fascinating and beautiful place. I wrote a bit about it on my blog.

I think it's time to bring back the IBM classic.

Re:Iran threatens to hit Gulf states if US launches new strikes on Wednesday August 05, 2026 @07:07PM (#49190288)
I think it's giving more credit than is due to assume there's a strategy. At this stage, it seems pretty clear that a number of people are using insider knowledge of these negotiations to enrich themselves. To me this is representative of a broader pattern of looting American institutions pervasive in this administration.

At the same time, we've purged our military leadership of anyone who said "no" to Trump's plans of antagonizing Iran. A conflict many military thinkers consider un-winnable.

Iran, having spent decades preparing for this type of situation, has the clear advantage and is pressing it hard. Shy of boots on the ground (itself an incredibly bloody and possibly futile avenue) there doesn't seem to be anyway to overcome their hold on the Strait.

There is no secret strategy. The country is led by inept people who believe might makes right, and take every opportunity to enrich themselves. People are bending over backwards to make meaning of this blatant corruption and it is one way we're enabling the destruction of America.

> I can't help but shake the feeling that the federal reserve is here for the wealthy, the bankers, and not for the rest of us, and anything they do is ultimately not for our benefit, but for theirs.

Because that is what's happening. Our economy is fractured after years of catering to the wealthy at the expense of the working class (anyone who finances their life via their labor.)

This is why I host a personal instance. The overheard for moderation and costs is much lower. It also means if I tire of this, migrating my content is easier.
Re:Canceling "Hey" on Monday July 27, 2026 @02:16PM (#49073526)
DHH has had a long decline, in my personal regard. A lot of things I ignored or gave grace for because of his early influence were actually clear signals about his fundamental beliefs.
I don't just dislike Elon Musk like he's some jerk I don't agree with. This isn't a baseball game where he's the other team's star pitcher and we should put aside our differences when the game is over.

Elon actively interfered with US elections, and has done untold damage through his DOGE stunt. He uses his vast wealth in ways that have done real damage to the US, the US economy and in support of people who are dismantling American rights.

The boogeyman of "China/Asia" won't make me "support" a man who uses his money to make America worse. I do not support his actions and I do no wish to fund them regardless of the technology they create.

Re:Steam Machine on Monday June 22, 2026 @02:57PM (#48634452)
What leads you to that conclusion? What do you think the average Steam user looks like? What about them doesn't fit your idea of this?
I’m confident a decently configured AI would produce a better answer. This reads like a BPO.
As someone who uses AI heavily in customer support, I am confident that response was not AI. That's a series of macros or a hastily edited macro from a human working a queue without thinking.
Re:Hacker mints $80M USD worth of USR stablecoins on Monday March 23, 2026 @08:07PM (#47496910)
The contract code said, "if you have a valid (off-chain) private key, you can mint tokens." The hacker gained access to their AWS account and ultimately their keys.

While I am happy to celebrate dumb crypto stuff, this isn't a situation where someone's code was "exploited." Their code was stupid, relying only on an off-chain private key to allow the minting of tokens. Their security was just also bad.

Re:Hacker mints $80M USD worth of USR stablecoins on Monday March 23, 2026 @08:04PM (#47496888)
Not that it matters much, but this summary isn't right. The contract wasn't "exploited." The company's AWS account was compromised, giving the attacker access to a (off-chain) private key.

The contract relied on the key to mint new tokens. The hacker gained access to the key (through AWS) and with it minted as much as they'd like. It is certainly a valid take that a contract that only required the private key to mint an unlimited amount of the token isn't a good one, but you don't exploit someone's front door lock by grabbing the key from under the welcome mat.

Yeah, this is what I don't understand. Why did we gut 18F, which was doing incredible work and make a... a new version? Seems the opposite of reducing waste.
Yes, this was a common phrase in early psychedelic and other drug experience sharing forums. Like a verbal talisman people believe kept them from incriminating themselves. I haven't thought about it in years. Delightful.
Re:The AirPods Pro 3 flight problem on Tuesday October 28, 2025 @12:11PM (#45734752)
I've been on ~4-5 flights since upgrading to the Airpods Pro 3 from the 2 and haven't experienced this, though I had occasionally experienced a similar whine on my Pro 2 that seemed to have been resolved in a software update sometime back.

I am surprised by the general negative sentiment for the 3s in this thread. They've felt like a straight and clear upgrade to me. Better fit, better ANC, and much improved battery life. I typically wear mine almost all day so comfort is hugely important to me.

Re:Martha's Vineyard Sign Language on Wednesday November 27, 2024 @04:01PM (#42259736)
It’s been tried. There’s International Sign Language (ISL) and it’s about as successful as Esperanto. I’ve mostly heard it’s used a little at large Deaf meet ups and conferences.

American Sign Language (ASL) is often the second sign language non-Americans learn as it has a some international presence.

But ultimately sign language users are no more likely to decide on and widely adopt a universal language than spoken language users.

Re:Noisy brain may underlie some of autism's sensory features on Thursday January 18, 2024 @07:08PM (#39049858)
Do you have any sources that present this to be the case in terms of diagnosing ADHD or autism at all?
This is exactly what I've been looking for. Thank you! Very excited to use this.
Re:Bogotá's website has sign language titles on Sunday October 02, 2022 @04:37PM (#33059989)
This is absolutely correct. ASL is so deeply different from English that in certain circumstances where it's a priority that a signer's understanding of the topic is clear there can be two interpreters at once. A hearing interpreter who interprets verbatim to a Deaf interpreter (a CDI, or certified Deaf interpreter) who then interprets to the Deaf recipient.

Public broadcasts should absolutely be interpreted to ensure that everyone has access to understanding them.

I encourage everyone to learn more about ASL and to learn a bit of ASL themselves. There are many amazing resources put out by Deaf people to help folks learn.

Re:Bogotá's website has sign language titles on Sunday October 02, 2022 @04:35PM (#33059960)
This parent-commenter is correct, ASL is a completely separate language from spoken English. Many people who are raised with ASL as their first language prefer seeing ASL rather than reading English.

Modern ASL includes elements of "signed English" but it it's own language, the third most common in the US.

I am a hearing person, so take my understanding of this with a grain of salt. Here is a Deaf primary resource to describe the difference.

Re:A Navy Seal's Semester at Yale, at Age 52 on Monday December 23, 2019 @02:44PM (#21866630)
Can you cite examples of this occurring with any sort of regularity in America? The most I've ever heard of are doctors prescribing puberty blockers - which actually preserves their ability to choose later.

Even this is seen as an extreme step and typically only done with multiple doctors signing off.

There are appear to be rare outliers and technicalities, but these are single digit exceptions rather than representative of some new norm.

I had the same problem - but US based. I reached out to their support as they recently sent me an email and they comped me a year of their Prime plan. It was nice of them but kind of too little too late.
Re:Ask HN: Companies with a culture similar to Basecamp's? on Wednesday December 27, 2017 @01:27PM (#16016758)
I work at Zapier and have for more than 2 years. Internally, we talk about Basecamp as one of the ideals we strive for and reference their writing frequently.

We're all remote and pride ourselves on being humble, helpful and have a proper work life balance. We sometimes describe it as a midwestern work ethic.

I'm not a founder or executive at Zapier so I can't pitch it from that perspective but as a happy employee and fellow fan of Basecamp I think you should check us out.

http://zapier.com/about

I completed a Front End Dev apprenticeship/boot camp with Bloc.io. I'm now the manager of support training at Zapier. While I think the technical skills it provided me with helped me out in my current role I don't think it would've prepared me to be an actual developer.
Having done an online boot camp I can say at least part of it is not wanting to spread negative feedback that might devalue your investment.

I imagine many people go into these programs to gain skills to get a job. If afterwards you talk about how the program failed to prepare you for that you're shooting yourself in the foot.

As to why there aren't more positive reviews - maybe it's related?

Re:How Zapier Went from Zero to 600k Users on Thursday August 20, 2015 @12:30PM (#10092905)
Zapier has a much heavier focus on business apps. Less internet of things, more workflows and invoices.
Do you guys have plans for an API or webhooks?
Its been hinted that they'll be busting other Tor marketplaces in the next day or so. I wonder if they were similarly infiltrated and what effect that will have on the community.
