Re:Mozilla Introduces Firefox Enterprise on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @02:45PM (#50092882)
Take my advice with a heavy grain of salt, as I think that I am likely heavily biased.

However, I would also venture that prioritizing "power-user" requests may end up helping your enterprise product, given the overlap between IT teams and power users. There is a lot of functionality that was lost in the interests of simplification. Even some of the appearance - such as the awful "let's add bouncy curves to every UI element" in your latest rollout - can have a very solid impact on how people perceive your product. Enterprise is a different sensibility than average user.

Re:An Update on Wayback Machine Access on Sunday September 20, 2026 @04:39PM (#49779851)
I know I'm coming to this post rather late, but there's actually a legal consequence to this as well. So many attorneys and law firms rely upon reference to the Wayback Machine as legal proof of a website's state as of a certain date. If more and more companies begin to opt out, or if that becomes less and less reliable, there may literally be changes in lawsuit outcomes based on the sudden unavailability of evidence. IANAL, but I am a litigation legal assistant. (Out of work and Chicago-based, if anyone knows of someone looking for a tech-aware assistant.)

As a side note, there is an Android app called StreetComplete [1] which creates 'quests' for you that let you contribute to OSM in a fun way.

I scanned my grandmother's books - mainly autobiographical, she was a medical missionary in China and India, and children's - for this very reason. She had five children, who all had families, grandfamilies, and in some cases great-grandfamilies, meaning that copies of her books became rare.

As silly as it sounded, as a child who grew up with Trek and TNG, I wanted some far-flung descendant to be able to generate her in a hologram, and to read her words.

As such, I made the decision to destroy my own copies of her books so that they could be scanned for this purpose and stored on the Internet Archive. It was the only practical method at that time. But it would be wonderful if somehow technology advanced quickly in this area so that it was easier to scan books non-destructively.

(The one issue I find dissatisfying about the process is that I could not substitute my own OCR of her work (some done, more planned) for the Archive's often substandard automated OCR. No disrespect to the Archive by this, and hopefully at some point they will re-scan with better software..)

In case anyone would like to check them out: https://archive.org/details/@mollyrealized/uploads

(A warning for those who do: my grandmother describes people as small - her Chinese cook and her Indian patients (she was a nurse), yes, but also her own daughter, her husband, and an upstate New York appliance salesman who calls her a pretty little woman. Applied to an elderly Chinese woman it carries a weight it doesn't carry applied to an American one. She also uses "coolie," ordinary in the 1930s and not now. Overall her writing, and the work it records, shows an ongoing desire to be warm to, to respect, and to understand people who weren't American. She and my grandfather went out to build and upgrade hospitals. They helped first and preached to those who wanted to hear it. As her grandchild, I believe I can accurately say that love and respect were what was in her heart.)

My grandparents were Americans in China during the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War. My grandfather was shot at by an inebriated Japanese soldier. If the gun hadn't jammed twice in a row, you wouldn't be speaking to me.

Ask HN: Anyone set up ways to easily obtain and read transcripts from Ted, YT?

I really absorb text a great deal better than listening to audio or watching video. I've heard others say the same and attribute to ADHD, so perhaps that's the case for me.TED very often has a transcript on their page, but it involves some clicking and then some copy-pasting, and the text result is often broken mid-clause after about 10-15 characters.I'm wondering if there's any useful...

Playing this out in my mind, exactly how early in the process would they assume said person would stop having a right to delete their phone data? Suppose I am in the car, and am told to wait in the car while such-and-such? Or suppose I do so after being instructed to get out, but before doing so, so I am within my car's property and/or not yet detained or in custody? There's going to be a lot of legal questions in this case about where the line should be re-set or re-drawn. And it's also all stupid and in violation of the Fifth Amendment, at least IMO.

Firefox could be doing a great deal more if it had a more imaginative corporate leadership.
I will say - and this is just my own experience and not a certain userwide trend response - that one benefit of LLMs is that they are able to take an annoyed observation and format it into a pretty stellar bug report, and then the human being can work on spit-polishing. Having the middle part of the composition automated is a real benefit (at least IMO) - I've been a better reporter.

I previously reported on my own and was ignored; now, not so much. I assume that the assistance by the LLM is providing needed detail or formatting. (Yes, I am reading what I am submitting and making sure it is optimal before sending it.)

I reported and got my first bug [1] accepted and fixed - in all honesty, the bug has been one of the primary reasons I've stayed on Firefox.

I have to admit, I had hoped that Bluesky would have countered that 300-character limitation and been a true microblog. I'm not sure why they chose to ape Twitter's limit.

Ask HN: I need a reminder-brain – how do you do it?

I recently read a blog post where someone calendered a reminder for five years into the future, then actually followed up on it.I'm wondering how you guys do it - what your reminder 'systems' are. I have not really been able to find something that's been very ubiquitious and able to capture my thoughts -- I have ADHD and really need kind of a "braindump -> successfully reminds me later"...

It is not insane, but we are talking at cross-purposes here. It is not insane to tell someone to write for their audience.
