Because the law is bad.
If only public schools spent as little per pupil as private schools!
Please tell me why you think they are if you disagree.
I don't think patents are legitimate.
Re:Politicians weigh renewal of Net access tax ban on Thursday May 24, 2007 @10:45AM (#24350)
"my own position is we ought to have a temporary moratorium until we finally resolve the issue of how the states are going to support public services with an eroding tax base predicated on the growth of e-commerce."

Stop supporting public services?

"Which makes the transaction costs higher than the idea is probably worth."

These costs could surely be lowered if there was demand for ideas in the first place.

I think this is more evidence that ideas by themselves are generally worthless.

"How would a market for ideas work, in any case? How could you prevent someone from listening to a bunch of ideas and just walking away with the ones they like?" -- your blog post

Secrecy and contracts?

If something is worthless because people will not give you money for it ("make something people want"), then there is nothing inherent in ideas that makes them worthless.

It is simply the fact that most people would not pay you for ideas that make them generally not a profitable endeavor.

Is this inherent in the human mind or are you making an untestable claim?
If they get there first how are they stealing?

Imagine I see you take a rock and stick and tie them together with sinew, which you then use as a hammer to break apart rocks.

After seeing you build this device, I then build my own.

For me to steal from you, you have to lose something you own, so how have I stolen anything?

Why is it unethical?

You're fine with information being given to thieves and murderers but not to a company that wants to improve your experience so you'll voluntarily give it more money?

You can download the PDF from: http://www.scribd.com/word/download/48387?extension=pdf

If you download it you can then use Foxit Reader or this online viewer: http://view.samurajdata.se/

There is a Firefox extension to do this:

http://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3997

You can also use the mouse's middle button.
Re:On Not Allowing Users to Register on Tuesday May 01, 2007 @06:14AM (#18356)
I was watching a Google video (http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=Designing+Next+Gen+Web+Apps) about designing the user interface for web apps and it talked about Measure Map (http://measuremap.com/).

It looked like a pretty neat product, but when I tryed to examine it more closely, it would't let me register.

I have some vague ideas about why they wouldn't want me to, but from a business standpoint, if someone is inquiring about your product shouldn't you want them to be able to?

"if I were launching a new website, here's what I'd do. Instead of hiding the Feedback link in the upper right hand corner, I'd place a form right on the main page. A big form. And I'd bend over backwards to get people to use it."

What are the two lines of code to produce this?

Re:What IDE is best for someone new to Python ? on Wednesday April 25, 2007 @08:06AM (#16609)
I used IDLE when I was learning Python, but I like PyScripter now:

Isn't it going to depend on what programming languages you already know as well as what programming language it is?

Even if you took the average I don't know if it would lead to a useful statistic.

Writing my ideas down helps them stop nagging me, allowing me to focus on what I rationally think is the most viable.

You don't think this is the right approach?

Re:Why should we have eight hours' sleep? on Saturday April 14, 2007 @11:49AM (#12896)
"I was told at uni that sleep is cyclical and that as long as you wake up during the lighter part of the sleep cycle you will feel fresh and alert. Wake up during the heavy sleep part and you will be a like a bear with a sore head all day." -- John D, Glasgow, UK (from the comments of the article)

I have found this to be the case. If I wake up alert, I find it much easier to dive into a problem, which then keeps me awake.
