Literally anything not done directly on the CPU - anything reliant on an external system - should be considered IO. If it requires talking with an external device/network/etc. it's IO.
The person who wrote that should go back and take an intro to computer architecture course.
I've done the startup thing twice and that was enough to make me realize it just isn't worth it.
There's a 99% chance that in 2-3 years the startup will implode and you're going to hate yourself for getting so involved that you drove away your partner. Not worth it. Not even a little bit.
I don't put a hard cap on screen time with my 2 year old, and he spends a ton of time playing by himself. Watching him do the pretend play thing is pretty fascinating, to be honest.
I'm assuming you don't have kids and only have limited interaction with kids in other social context. If we have friends over or something we try to put something on TV to keep the toddler occupied so we can have a discussion, but that's far from the norm. He spends most of the time each day playing with his toys, pretend playing, running around, etc. etc. - and again, I work from home and I'm not strict about limiting his TV time, he chooses to do other stuff the majority of the day.
Your dad would spend hundreds of dollars on a TV set every year and then throw it in the trash after a couple of weeks???
That sounds insane.
The “pay less for remote workers” thing will only work if all employees follow suit. If Apple decides to cut pay for remote workers, but google doesn’t, you’re going to see a lot more former Apple employees join ranks at Google.
My wife is lifelong vegetarian, and I'm a big fan of keto. We've basically adapted to a "I make food for myself, she makes food for herself and we split responsibility for making food for the kids" workflow and it works out pretty well.
It helps a lot that I do the grocery shopping, I try to avoid buying stuff that I'll be too tempted by - like regular carb tortillas or plain tortilla chips.
I know it's a personal anecdote, but 100% of the devs I've worked with who refused to use an IDE ranged from below average to flat out bad at software development.
The person who wrote this is my spirit animal.
A variant can be more dangerous even if it’s not technically more deadly simply because it’s more contagious. If a virus is 10x as transmissible, and a lot more people get infected than would otherwise, a 1% mortality rate would result in a lot more dead bodies
Congrats on having a spouse who makes decent money.
Shoes for my toddler are $30-$40, and while it’s not a burden for me, it certainly would be if I was only bringing home $1200/month.
No fast food jobs have flexible hours. You’re lucky if you have any say in your hours at all.
No lockdowns are going to happen, but I expect to be masking up for at least another 6 months. Not a big deal, definitely better than it was last August, that’s for sure.
The numbers don’t lie, .001% of vaccinated people end up dying from covid, which is an order of magnitude less than folks who aren’t vaccinated.
It's so sad to even think that's a possibility :(

I doubt they would have given a 1 year old water from a stream.
I assume they do this because they are uber paranoid about product leaks.
I read Mistborn after I read the first 3 books of Stormlight and it's very noticeable how his writing style has evolved/improved over time.
A Long Way to an Angry Small Planet is really good, too.
Because we, as a society, have decided we want/need a large government. It's not complicated. You don't have to like it, but don't pretend we didn't make a conscious choice as a society.
No one is saying the government should start producing chips, but they can offer financial incentives to encourage chip manufacturers to build fabs here instead of overseas.
We're in this mess due to our never ending quest for more "efficiency"
The government needs to recognize the fact that semiconductors are essential to national security and ensure we have the capability to produce our own.
I point out that there have been multiple audits, already, and no proof of fraud was found.
Doing a third audit, with zero oversight/accountability, is not a serious attempt to detect fraud. It's a means to "discover" wrongdoing that can't be proven/disproven and further confuse people about what really happened.
The vast majority of Republicans think the election was stolen -
https://www.prri.org/spotlight/the-big-lie-most-republicans-...That number is likely even higher, now, after the crap that the GOP is pulling in Arizona. One of my close friends (a conservative, who doesn't even like Trump) is now convinced that the Democrats somehow stole the election. It's insane.
Those people are now 100% convinced that the election was fraudulent... I don't see how that's a good thing?
haha, that scenario definitely crossed my mind when I heard about it, but she's not an idiot (my friend) - I assume they had other reasons to think the lady wasn't all there, but I didn't ask.
Prior to working in financial crimes she spent a lot of time dealing with catching drug dealers/smugglers/cartels, which I think is where most agents go to cut their teeth, so she's heard pretty much every ridiculous excuse/justification you can imagine.
Yep, the FBI is unlikely to nail you to the wall for doing something inadvertantly (unless it was really really bad).
A friend of mine is a field agent who spent years prosecuting financial crimes, and a lot of her time was spent knocking on doors and telling people to stop doing stupid stuff. Like one lady in particular was elderly and kept getting taken advantage of by money launderers (people putting cash in her account and telling her to deposit it somewhere else). My friend had to visit her on multiple occasions to explain that she needed to stop doing that.
Options have always been a crapshoot with the odds heavily stacked against you.
I'm not going to read anything written by Greenwald, he's completely gone off the deep end. He quit his job at the intercept because they wouldn't let him publish conspiracy garbage about the Biden rape accusation unless he could provide some sort of proof - he concluded that being asked to show proof of what he was accusing someone of counted as "being censored".
Anyway, I'll say that just because the guy died of a stroke afterward doesn't mean it wasn't caused indirectly by being blasted in the face by bear mace. Even if his death was completely unrelated, it doesn't make Jan 6 any less of an insurrection.
Linking to Greenwald really isn't helping your case...
