Me too, but it is so unreliable laggy, I sometimes have to wait 2 secs or more for the menu to appear, ruining the flow.

And typing ALT 0151 to get an em dash, I mean seriously?

For someone typing accents and em + en dashes on purpose — well before it becomes an AI’s trait — it’s so infuriating, I can’t believe people type books on Windows. All this while macOS solved this, built in the OS, since ages now…

The first video mentionned (in French) generalises about AR/VR AND provides interesting insights when reframing the AVP in this context.

Thanks for sharing!

Some French people spent the time to digitize an impressive amount of French magazines: https://www.abandonware-magazines.org/

I don’t know for other countries though.

Holographic display projected from whatever wearable: watch, ring, earring, glasses...

You don’t “hold” anything, you interact freely with a screen that appears floating in front of you.

Hey, the projection could be applied directly into your own eye, as only you could see it (or eyeDrop — pun intended — with others ?)

Good luck with that, but hey, Clarke’s 3rd law:

Memory lane: the same Tenochtitlan was reconstructed in VRML back in the late 90’s…

The city that never ends getting reconstructed, in a way!

They already are: with these on-prem versions of the common public clouds.
Re:Space Invaders creator reveals game’s origin story on Monday April 17, 2023 @06:43AM (#35598986)
Yes and no: despite the very visible inspiration it's rather NOT coming from the game anymore, as stated in the https://space-invaders.com/about/ section:

This said, my initial source of inspiration was the Space Invaders and a few other video games but I have rapidly developed new models and created totally original icons.
I remember he also said before that was an effort to avoid any copyright infringement. Taito seems to be pretty nice with him though, which is not granted these days!

Hilarious.

I note it applies to just everything, as long as you have these number of different roles in the added value chain.

I experienced the same re criticism.

I’m unsure about the diversity questions in the application form though. Do you think your new answers would have changed your outcome ?

Re:The 1040ST on Sunday January 29, 2023 @03:22AM (#34566033)
I added one such a switch.

Basically, grounding a pin of the external floppy drive connector (if memory serves) would make the ST read the OTHER side of the single-sided floppy disk of the INTERNAL drive.

This is because some floppies were formatted in single-side mode, and as a result using half of the maximum possible space. Think B-side of vinyl disks, literally.

The switch let you use the other side, provided you formatted it (and beware of the switch position to not mess up at formatting time…)

Many commercial softwares (incl. games) were using that single-side mode for backward compatibility reasons: I believe an early version of the ST serie was using an internal floppy drive only capable of single-sided usage. Hence the legacy.

My switch was really a simple switch I had around, combined with an hairpin directly plugged into the connector.

First hardware hack!

Re:Web Hackers vs. the Auto Industry on Wednesday January 04, 2023 @02:51AM (#34243164)
Looks like another recurring movie where evil/young wizards (car manufacturers) would summon some attractive daemons for their own needs (profit/power) thanks to some new magic spells (IoT tech) without mastering it, leading to unintended consequences (vulnerabilities and bad exploits) that others wiser wizards (security researchers/industry) know for ages.

Not good, but seems to be the IT curse repeating again and again.

And? What’s the rest of the plan?

I hear people saying that, but this is very short term with no sustainable strategy.

Just genuinely pointing out he could be replaced by worse options, and you need to plan against it as well.

There is the guy, the system he built, the persons he chose to put in place, all incentivised to continue.

Maybe it’s becoming a major media source?

You know, like your on-demand TV channel that knows what you want, already.

FTS, not FTL.

I believe the example above is more about sound speed than light speed.

I experienced concerts in stadiums, in the back rows, where the distance from the stage makes the sounds arrive noticeably later than the visuals.

The delay is really perceptible, and disturbing, to a point.

A TV audience would not suffer from it (assuming a live broadcast, with negligible broadcast latency, for the example to make sense).

In The Redemption of Time, Baoshu offers his view.

It’s “only” a fan fiction, albeit approved by Liu Cixin.

It nonetheless gives a nice — and as expected — unexpected description of them.
