I think Hoka's Speedgoat trainers really do live up to the marketing.

I do a lot of mountain and trail running here in Norway, and I've exclusively used Hoka Speedgoats for the last five years. Their performance is excellent.

(Just walking around any Norwegian town, it seems like the majority of trainers are Hokas.)

Re:Generative Art over the Years on Friday April 10, 2026 @07:48AM (#47716680)
If you consider the patterns in nature to be art (which I do!), you might enjoy the book "The Computational Beauty of Nature" by Gary William Flake. [0]

The subtitle is "Computer Explorations of Fractals, Chaos, Complex Systems, and Adaptation".

It's a wonderful book to own as a physical copy, and the contents are very inspiring for generative art.

Looks nice! Any chance of a side-by-side mode?

Andrej Karpathy made an interesting comment on the same paper: https://x.com/karpathy/status/1980397031542989305
This story reminded me of the "BeBox" [0] PowerPC computer from the 1990's, which had Blinkenlights on its front bezel.

(It ran the very cool "BeOS" operating system[1], which was eventually ported to Mac, then x86.)

Re:C "clockwise/spiral" rule to understand declarations on Wednesday January 01, 2025 @05:29AM (#42565172)
As a C programmer, declarations in Go appeared "backwards" to me when I first saw them.

IMO the Go syntax is a vast improvement as it's much simpler and avoids the clockwise/spiral issue: https://appliedgo.com/blog/go-declaration-syntax

Re:Australia/Lord_Howe is the weirdest timezone on Wednesday October 30, 2024 @04:52AM (#41993027)
Yes, this is indeed a different situation and my comment doesn't make that clear. Thank for pointing that out. I've made an edit.

> America/Nuuk does daylight savings at -01:00 (yes, with a negative)

Europe/Dublin has a negative DST offset. Irish DST runs through the European winter (i.e. the opposite of the other European timezones).

Re:Apple's AirPods Pro hearing health features on Tuesday October 22, 2024 @05:28AM (#41912628)
The music at many concerts and nightclubs is unfortunately loud enough to cause permanent hearing loss.

Ear plugs reduce the volume to a level where you can still hear the music, but the risk of long term damage is reduced. (You can get "musician's ear plugs" which attenuate all frequencies equally, so they don't make the music sound weird.)

But not over a cable.

Submarine cables are clearly marked on nautical charts, and even recreational boaters know not to anchor in those areas.

A professional trawler captain is not going to accidentally trawl over such an area.

Re:VCs aren’t your friends on Thursday May 16, 2024 @06:28AM (#40376827)
Fees such as trading costs are a percentage of trading volume.

Therefore, the more money you are managing, the higher your trading costs. (i.e those costs are "fixed" but its a "fixed percentage" rather than a static number.)

Re:Endlessh-go: a Golang SSH tarpit that traps bots/scanners on Thursday March 28, 2024 @10:35AM (#39852078)
Endlessh periodically sends data so the read timeout won't trigger. Specifically, it draws out the crypto negotiation stage indefinitely by exploiting a feature of the SSH protocol.

(Of course, the bot author could detect that behaviour too.)

There's more info from the author of Endlessh: https://nullprogram.com/blog/2019/03/22/

For those wondering how they transfer the generated energy from the tidal kite to the shore:

> The turbine shaft turns the [onboard] generator which outputs electricity to the grid via a power cable in the tether and a seabed umbilical to the shore.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a clear and succinct readme.

I really liked the layout:

  - Why
  - How Lockbox helps
  - Main benefits
  - Drawbacks
  - How to run
  - Design philosophy
I wish more projects would follow this format :)

Re:GIMP 3.0 finally has a release schedule on Friday November 24, 2023 @06:58AM (#38403068)
I've been using GIMP for well over a decade, and the UI still deeply frustrating.

When I see what Blender has achieved over that time, I wish GIMP could have done the same.

Re:Notes on the Go translation of Reposurgeon (2020) on Friday December 10, 2021 @10:21AM (#29510902)
Really interesting read. Especially the suggestion for how to support iterators.

It should be noted that the writeup is a year old, which (understandably) means that the comments on generics are a little out of date.

Re:Go 1.18 will embed source version information into binaries on Wednesday October 27, 2021 @03:38AM (#29010548)
Agreed. Anything that simplifies the build process and leads to less custom tooling is very welcome.
Re:Go 1.18 will embed source version information into binaries on Wednesday October 27, 2021 @03:35AM (#29010526)
If there are projects where you don't want to reveal this info in the binary, you can turn the feature off with:

-buildinfo=false

Re:Ask HN: Where are all the old Show HNs? on Friday October 01, 2021 @10:07AM (#28718599)
I haven't read The Embedded Entrepreneur yet, but I can recommend "Zero to Sold" by Arvid. (Zero to Sold isn't specifically "audience first", but TEE is).

FWIW, apart from his books, he also does a lot to encourage and promote other founders. He seems like a decent guy.

Re:Show HN: A pattern generator with 1300 shapes and 300 dpi on Thursday September 23, 2021 @08:28AM (#28628198)
This is great. I particularly like the Bauhaus styles. Excellent work :)

Kudos for the SVG download option too!

Agreed.

The adoption rate is even higher in Oslo. I've seen some residential streets where 80% of the parked vehicles are EVs.

Re:Lee “Scratch” Perry inventor of Dub dies at 85 on Sunday August 29, 2021 @04:12PM (#28350052)
Sad news :(

His work was incredible. He was also impressively prolific. Wikipedia lists 77 albums.
