It's also called baduk and weiqi, both should give good results
Re:Ask HN: Is shareware dead? on Monday July 06, 2015 @06:10AM (#9837981)
This might be true for the mobile market, however the PC market is a different beast entirely.

Elegant to program with. Not write a parser for.
... he didn't imply they did
Capitalised identifiers? Global variables? Inconsistent indentation? PM of Singapore needs a better style guide.
People with agendas making aggressive comments on barely related subjects to incite arguments which accomplish nothing are precisely what is wrong with todays online discussion.
i got it to say some pretty mean things. i dunno if you wanna fix that in case some people get offended: https://imgur.com/a/03Bgv
Ugh go back to reddit

oh ok, i only assumed cause I can't downvote yet haha
Re:Make This in an Hour on Sunday March 29, 2015 @04:49AM (#9284250)
You've got to get your earn the right to downvote by being a productive member of the community. I think it's 500 karma before you can downvote
Re:Thousands of people are watching this guy code a search engine on Thursday February 19, 2015 @04:13AM (#9073133)
How do you figure? Reading source code is incredible helpful for understanding how to program properly. Watching somebody step through their code and solve each problem in real time would be absolutely fantastic for understanding problems and organising solutions. Also what's wrong with code as a verb for programming?
Re:How a Blind Person Programs on Thursday January 29, 2015 @04:38AM (#8965153)
Holy shit, I admire that guy so much. Being able to program whilst lacking sight astounds me. I wonder how he got into it.

Becoming blind is one of my biggest fears and I consider programming to be one of my favourite activities on the planet, I'm happy that if the worst were to ever happen to me, I wouldn't be completely screwed. However I gotta wonder how well he's able to hold all his code in his head just off hearing it, whenever I program I often go back and read and re-read parts I've already written, I imagine having to hear it over just glancing over it would slow the whole process down a lot. I know he mentioned that he's gotten very good at mentally conceptualising his code which no doubt takes a lot of training but damn, a really large codebase would throw me for a tizz.

I've got a solution but it involves an old priest and a young priest
Is the board continuously flashing for anyone else? Mac OSX 10.10.1 Safari.
Re:Hex Invaders on Sunday January 18, 2015 @11:16PM (#8910287)
What exactly do you mean? I didn't find anything on the screen too intense, overwhelming or unnecessary.
Well I mean it kind of is. C's my favorite language but it's like a machete, simple enough, fairly easy to use and useful in a lot of places but if you don't know how to use it properly it's very easy to cut yourself with.
Re:What is special about Nim? on Thursday January 01, 2015 @06:23PM (#8824748)
I'm pretty sure that was removed, the case insensitivity.
Re:The Fermi Paradox on Friday December 26, 2014 @12:52AM (#8798199)
Or maybe the long living civilisations never existed, or we aren't knocking on the right doors, or in the right areas?
Re:The Fermi Paradox on Friday December 26, 2014 @12:51AM (#8798196)
A lot of people consider nuclear annihilation a big threat but I'm not too worried about tbh. I mean if you think about it, every major player has got a trigger to end all life at any given point, doesn't it seem reasonable that at some point you invest a lot of money into systems that can safeguard and prevent this type of catastrophe. I know a lot of people may consider the governments dangerous and selfish but they aren't stupid, major players have definitely got systems in place to neutralise these threats.

At least they do in my optimistic viewpoint.

Re:Coq: The world’s best macro assembler? (2013) [pdf] on Monday December 15, 2014 @05:12PM (#8754771)
Why are people getting downvoted for saying coq is not exactly a great name. It's not, no matter it's definition it sounds like cock, not a great name to advertise the language.

I mean if someone created a programming language called vagina, labia, penis or sphincter it would be ridiculed, cause it's not an appropriate name for a language.

Re:Stack Exchange for Emacs on Sunday December 14, 2014 @10:12PM (#8750512)
That's certainly what the title implies, perhaps "Stack Overflow on Emacs" would have been a better title.
Dwarf Fortress? Who's development is ongoing?
I would definitely put that down to experience, C++ is a much different beast to QBasic. Qbasic being geared towards beginners, C++ being geared towards professionals.

I mean it's the difference between a tool box 70 years ago (Software lives by dog years) and a tool box today, the tools you will find are vastly different, and even though you can build a house with the tools from 70 years ago, that does not necessarily mean you will be able to travel forward in time and build a house with todays tools because you have zero experience with it.

Re:The Pirate Bay down, forever? on Wednesday December 10, 2014 @04:06AM (#8728340)
Extremely misleading title...
Re:Welcome to a comet on Thursday November 13, 2014 @07:25AM (#8601150)
I think you should look at these things in perspective, by no means is our society perfect, in relation to literally any point in history before maybe the fall of the Soviet Union, this world was objectively worse. Global conflicts are operating on much smaller scales, the environmental front has a hell of a lot of people fighting to improve current conditions, the economy isn't a boiler ready to explode. We are NOT in the middle ages in ANY of those sectors, to even suggest that tells me you've actually got 0 idea of what this world or what historically we looked like. We aren't burning witches or beheading people, we aren't accusing mentally ill people of being possessed by the devil. We have medicine, we have food, we can communicate with people around the world instantaneous. People are moving away from separated communities and becoming a global entity.

Look buddy, in the end our perspective on the world is what you decide it is and while we aren't living in the Garden of Eden our world is pretty top notch presently and in relation to any point in human history the world is great and only getting better.

So remove your pessimist spectacles and try and enjoy life and think optimistically, you only get one whip around and would you rather spend it disappointed and grumpy at the world or hopeful and excited?

>My 2 cents (which is most than millions of people can spare ;-) )

Also that was probably the snarkiest smug comment and it makes me think you like the smell of your own farts

Thanks, I'll be sure to keep my eye on that sub
Re:Welcome to a comet on Thursday November 13, 2014 @06:43AM (#8601030)
You know I have some bad days some times, but seeing shit like this just makes me think "What a fucking time to be alive!" It's truly incredibly and is sometimes that kick in the pants I need to keep on going. We are living in a golden age of humanity right now, at no point before in human history have so many people had such an incredible quality of life and never before has man been doing such incredible feats and have the ability to reach a worldwide audience almost instantaneously. The fact that just a few hours ago a human designed space craft landed on a comet, after decades of work and I can receive the images fresh from the great minds that brought us this feat, while laying in bed dicking about on my phone, it's just pure and simply astounding.

For all our flaws I love humans and I am so excited to see what the future holds.

Back to the comet, any word on what happened to the harpoons? I heard there was a misfire or they didn't fire or something? Any idea how that's affected the landing as of yet?

They say this but why aren't they targetting the real evil shit on the dark web? Why the hell are they wasting their time and resources on drug busts when there are seriously sick dangerous people using those services, hunt them. They're the real dangers to society, not the ones selling weed and ecstasy.

Makes me feel sick all the wasted talent that isn't being used to take down the dark dark corners of this world.

Re:Creating 3D worlds with HTML and CSS on Wednesday November 05, 2014 @09:03PM (#8565428)
I think you might be misunderstanding why this was made, it wasn't made to be a good idea or even an actual engine that people use. The person made it because they could, because it's fun to do neat stuff for no other reason that to just do them.
