When I tried to do it, they added a £5/month thing to my account, but then also added a £5/month goodwill, so I wasn't paying for it. I have no idea what it is doing, but there is no filter anymore. I had to phone a few times before it worked though.

+1 for OCZ. I went through three Kingston drives in a year. This OCZ is over a year old now and still going strong
This has happened to me a couple of times, but it doesn't prove that GoDaddy are the ones who are actually registering them.
The UK is a really good place to live.
Re:The New MacBook Pro: Unfixable, Unhackable, Untenable on Friday June 15, 2012 @10:12AM (#4116555)
I would have preferred it if Apple had designed it to be the same thickness, given it a bigger battery, took out the CD drive and allowed us to replace SSD and RAM... As great as they are, I won't be getting one.. Stuff breaks too quickly for me.
Re:Security vulnerability in MySQL ubuntu on Monday June 11, 2012 @09:50AM (#4094541)
<?php while(true) if(mysql_connect("localhost", "root", "password")) exit("connected with password: password");

I am sad to say it worked on my Ubuntu server :(

Haha, yeah. That happened to me.
I agree.. I would probably have left..

The questions either have subjective answers or are totally trivial.

I was lucky enough to have lunch with Steve Furber and my two of my old college lecturers a few months ago. A very fascinating man with lots of history.
Re:Why it's OK to leave a tech job at 5 p.m. on Monday April 16, 2012 @05:54PM (#3849667)
When I was working for a company, I would get it an 8:15 and left at 17:00 on the dot. When asked if I could stay to do something which I felt could wait until the morning, I would say no and leave. I didn't get fired, instead I had a life. Working is not everything, there are much more important things in life.
Re:Poll: What's Your Favorite Programming Language? on Friday March 23, 2012 @04:04PM (#3746961)
PHP is nice... but if I could improve it, I'd like it to be not quite so loosely typed. I would like to specify the datatypes.
Re:Exploding head syndrome. I kid you not. on Tuesday December 27, 2011 @09:18AM (#3395783)
I'm really glad I have come across this... I've had this for a couple of years, about once or twice a month. For me it feels like something is applying a lot of pressure to the side of my head, accompanied by a very loud tingling sound... Only lasts for about two seconds, but not something I enjoy
Re:How Can Anyone Still Hate Bill Gates? on Saturday November 05, 2011 @04:28AM (#3199290)
I love Mac OS, but I definitely do not hate Bill Gates. He made computers affordable and accessible, while making a lot of money. A lot of that money has gone to charities which is great.
Re:Why the Mac App Sandbox makes me sad on Thursday November 03, 2011 @01:44PM (#3192825)
The only time I'm going to feel concerned about the sandboxing on Mac OS apps is if it's forced onto all applications.

If that happens, I shall leave Mac just like I did Windows and be forced to use Linux... I can't say I particularly like the new layout of Ubuntu so maybe I should just quite computing completely :'(

Re:My BBC Micro Model B and a plume of acrid smoke on Tuesday November 01, 2011 @09:08AM (#3181789)
I purchased a few spare power supplied for my BBC a couple of years ago. I'm not letting go due to a broken power supply!
Haha - Indeed. It didn't load the style sheets for me once. Not a pretty sight.
Yep - Buttons are bad enough, but things like sliders are just the worst things imaginable!!

I thought it might be worth looking into web workers, but everything seems to interact with the DOM so that's not much help either.

I'm writing really a very large app for the company I work for. We're using PhoneGap with HTML and JavaScript and have many plugins.

What we are not having problems with is the fact that we only really have a single thread to do everything. All I can say is that I'm glad it wasn't my idea to build it this way.

I agree. I set a process identifier and the time of the update.
I've been in a situation where I've needed to queue about 100k of messages. Each message unique with custom attributes populated also from MySQL.

I used to generate the messages and then insert them into queuing system but for 100k messages I never managed to make this fast... I have managed to queue all these messages in less than half a second using just one MySQL query.

If anyone has any better ideas, please let me know!

Re:Ask HN: What if bandwidth weren't an issue? on Monday August 15, 2011 @08:02AM (#2886456)
I imagine it would be possible to run games on remote servers, so people don't have to spend a lot of money on an amazing computer.
Re:Death to the 'noreply' mailbox on Thursday August 11, 2011 @01:49PM (#2873946)
I have a tiny company, and any automated emails always have written at the bottom "If you have any questions, simply reply to this email"

People are always slightly surprised by it, in a good way.

Actually didn't realise how many things I like in Lion...

"When you do things right, no one will notice you've done anything at all"

Re:Ask HN: Windows phone dev success/failure stories? on Sunday July 31, 2011 @10:14AM (#2828350)
I think that implies Windows Phone was a bit of a failure perhaps?

Everyone wants to know how it's done, but maybe no one knows :(

This is why I have my own server... If everything gets deleted, it's my fault (I should have been backing up). I'm not going to punish myself for not paying attention to my non-existent terms of service.

I recognise that with the 'cloud', comes simplicity... but I'm not sure if I will ever be able to let go of my own data.

Re:Is there a proper etiquette for quitting your job? on Friday July 15, 2011 @03:34PM (#2768748)
If you had put in the contract time that the notice should is a month (or maybe more) you might have not have the same problem.

I only need to give one week for my current job, and when I leave, that's probably all I will give.

Re:Why I've built an alternative to Github on Monday June 20, 2011 @02:37PM (#2675382)
Really beautiful and easy to use. Very impressed!
Re:Ask HN: Should I quit my new job? on Thursday June 09, 2011 @03:35AM (#2636332)
Well obviously not actually a 'last resort', but something which I will try if I fail to get where I want to be.
Re:Ask HN: Should I quit my new job? on Thursday June 09, 2011 @01:44AM (#2636149)
Hey, thanks for all your comments.

A few of you said university might be a good route, and I do not disagree - But I'd much rather see how far I get without it, and leave that almost as a last resort.

And I will stick it out! I agree with what all of you have said about finishing a project is still finishing a project, even if it's not something I feel particularly passionate about.

Thanks for the help, everyone :)

Ask HN: Should I quit my new job?

I'm 19, and for my age I consider my skill set to be quite good. I have just left college and had my first job interview for a PHP web app company. I got the job and was quite happy with myself considering I was against several other people who all had degrees (I just have a few A Levels), and in the past I have only ever done contact work. The company mainly looks after a range of games they...
